For advanced users only...

If I purchase a desktop with Windows XP Professional edition installed, will it run my ancient DOS version of DBase???

And please don't ask why I would need to run an ancient DOS version of DBase. And please stop laughing...

Windows XP has built in capability that is supposed to allow it to emulate older operating systems that, if done correctly, would allow you to run the older file. But, how far back it goes and how thorough it is I can't answer. I'm running XP now and it's run everything I've asked it to, which is a serious step up from Windows 2000.

Beware though, if you are running XP, don't go changing a ton of hardware anytime soon. If you do, Microsoft will lock you out. Their piracy protection for XP.

Sorry Buddha, but I gotta ask....why in the world would you want to run a DOS ANYTHING if you're not a sys. admin. or something ?

It is a good question Buddha http://www.extremeskins.com/ubb/smile.gif.

But, XP is one sweet workstation OS so far. I won't get to play with the server version for a while -- no 64-bit Itanium servers and no 32-bit server version yet -- but, it is a huge upgrade over 2000. It will just take more getting used to. It's so heavily gui intensive it makes NT look like UNIX.

Well if you HAVE to know...

I work in a very small local government office in a very small locality with a very small amount of funding for IT. We run one of our "critical" databases in DBase and until I can upgrade our IT around here, it will stay in DBase. I would estimate this version of DBase has been in operation since 1990.

Now please stop laughing.

Bufford, it's true if you have the home version.

I have a developers copy so I can move around better. But, yes, it's true you can't install it more than once.
