View Full Version : Extremeskins would appreciate your donation

It is the time of year when we pay more attention to those who are less fortunate........those who might be in need.

I know, as far as Rock Solid 40 (http://www.rocksolid40.com), we are looking for donations for underprivliged children.

However, this is not for Rock Solid.

This is for EXTREME.

As I go from thread to thread reading, I see all the many posters, posting each and every day......making Extreme their home.

And yet, under their name is a white donation button. Do you wonder why it is there?

You may have NO idea how much time and money it costs to keep a site going. I am just getting started and I am already in awe.

So, at the end of the year........why not click on that white button...and send a bit to keep this site going. I don't think you have to buy anything....just drop something in the box.

Happy Holidays Extreme Owners and Staff.

I don't know what the number should be, but there are people who have thousands of posts and the little white button is still there.

So many sites are going pay per view. We are lucky to have this one.

Let's keep it free. Donate.

Note to self: Plan on bumping this thread a bunch if need be. :)

I recently had a poster tell me that if I didn't like what he said, get off "his site". couldn't help but notice that he had the "make a donation" sign under his avatar. Can't help but notice that little sign under a few of the more "prolific" posters on Xtreme as well.

One might even be tempted, were they inclined to make a donation anyway, to search for a 'Relive the Glory' thread. ;)

Give up a couple of tacos, or cokes, or a pack of cigarettes.

$5.00 is good.

Wow...talk about guilt trip.....okay...okay....

There was a way one time that you could make a donation (give money to the site) and also get a couple shirts or something - does that still exist? Probably too close to Xmas to make that happen if it is still available...

You're not alone. After only having my buisness's site (bottom of my sig ;) )up for about a month & a half, it isn't cheap to keep anything up online unless its a freebie Yahoo Group.

For those that say they can't make a donation, click through a few of the Google adds at the very bottom of each page.

I do have a question though. After making a contribution, does the "make a donation" go away or does it continue to show up for future donations. I notice others have "contributor", etc. by their signatures. Do you need to contribute a certain amount for this change to occur?

Thanks for your help anyone.....

You people!! You can come to this site, get every drop of infomation out there about our beloved Redskins, and you can't spend few extra dollars to help support it and keep it going. You can even buy a really cool t-shirt, hat, or even get one of the Redskins super bowl victories on DVD. Make it a great present. (I know it made my fathers b-day very easy.)

Yes, it will go away. Give the site admins a little time. They are busy folks this time of year too, just like the rest of us. As I recall, it took about 10 days or so for them to update me after my first contribution. They will get it though.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who is a part of Extremeskins, and especially those who have felt that this site is worthy of your financial support.

Extremeskins really is nothing without the community of people who chat and read here everyday. Its YOU who make this place special and worthy of the time that the Staff put into it.

When you build a site that inspires fans from other teams, ESPECIALLY rivals (Tom[GiantFan], Blazers21, Eagles_Legendz, Westbrook36, etc...) to support it financially, you know you must be doing something right.

 too all of you, and Happy Holidays!

:slap: Hey Bozo, you know that's Blade you're talking to, don't you?

Yeah, so what? What makes him so special that he doesn't have to contribute to this site?

Cause he's one of the owners of this site, Bonehead! Because you can't make enough of a donation to come anywhere near what he does to make this site what it is!
GET IT!!!

Ouch! Well how was I supposed to know?

Hello! McFlyyyy!
Didn't you see the Daniel Snyder avatar?

Yeah, but I just thought he had pictures of the staff in compromising positions or something.

Well he might. But then that wouldn't be none of your business anyway, now would it?

No. Geez, can't a guy ask a question?

Yeah. But around here, we prefer intelligent questions.

Oh yeah! Well then tell me how the heck to Cowboy fans get to ask questions here?

Because the best way to appreciate intelligence, is to show it next to ignorance. You know, the same way you got in.

Well can I wait until after the holidays are over to make a donation?

Sure. Just don't forget.

I won't. And thanks.

Aren't you forgetting something?

Oh yeah. Sorry Blade.

The tshirts are high quality and the DVDs are absolutely awesome. They are a LOT of fun to watch, especially during the long offseason. Those of you younger members who weren't around for Gibbs first tenure might really enjoy watching some of the games from Gibbs first tenure.

Anyone who uses the site regularly should donate 5 dollars or something. Blade, Die Hard, and the others put a ton of time and hard work into the site. They shouldn't have to keep putting money into it any more as many people come here. Come on everybody, Pony up!

I'd do just about anything for this site.

**warning explicity disgusting sob story follows**

I was ready to hand over my Dad's game collection from the early and mid 80's in order to add to the DVD collection, but when you all got those nasty floods, my brother's house (which is the house I grew up in) was completely flooded out in the basement destroying the old tapes.

My brother and I still cry about that to this day.

One of these days I swear he'll post, but I don't think he's gotten over this yet. It had more sentimental value than just cool games and Redskin glory on tape.....

Well I almost contributed a while back. Was thinking about sending in 100.

I was going to. But I changed my mind and decided I'd wait awhile.

Once again, I'd almost convinced myself it was time to do so. And I had discussed it with another board member (not on the board). Then this thread comes up......

When did I decide NOT to contribute (at least until I changed my mind)? When that white "shame" button went up.

Because I looked on it as an attempt to "shame" people to contribute.

It irritated me. Really irritated me. Like this and the return of the "donate, donate, donate" threads do, and mention is made of the button.

The board's widely claimed to be free and that it always will be free. Yet here a big white "shame" button is put up for anyone who doesn't donate.....

And a comment is made that anyone over 500 posts should contribute.....

If the board really is free, then there would be NO pressure to contribute. No attempt to "shame" a member....

A member of the board would be doing it because they WANTED to, not because they felt pressure from other board members to do so.....

But that's my opinion and really who cares....

LOL shame button LOL, it is free and i dont recall any of the owners requesting donations, although i would see nothing wrong with that. The button is there simply to make it easy to do so. and removing it just gives the person who did "DONATE" credit for doing so. The rest the members are just making a sugestion, u should take it as that and not stress urself about it if u really dont wanna give. I only gave a couple bucks because thats what i can afford, but i also understand that every little bit helps. I get the feeling you feel guilty for not donating but thats just my gut feeling. thake that for whats its worth also. :2cents:

although i could be stepping over the line and stating things that are not so. just my opinion.

I agree that there is a certain level of audacity to those who are not board owners who "guilt" folks to pledge under the comfortable umbrella of righteousness. It's an easy yet ignorant stance to take.

As for the board owners you have never once asked for my cash, and I do plan to pledge some day soon. Threads likes these do irritate heavily though.

The thread owner should simply lead by example. No need to wave hands and jump up and down.

One small donation to contribute to a lot of time you spend here on this site won't hurt. It's obviously a free site. You of all people should know that considering all the posts you have made. If you don't want to make a donation, then don't. Soak it up like a sponge

I thik the donation button is just a reminder. But then I've twice thrown down platinum and I have nowhere near the income some cats on this board do, though I don't have kids or the like, so maybe that helps.

Maybe, instead of the button they can just leave the "contributor" space blank so that those who have contributed are recognized and lead by example, but so the attention isnt' drawn to who hasn't paid.

I donated after I got comfortable here...when I knew I would be around here everyday...this site has become part of my life. I spend a good amount of time each day here (avg 4 hrs per day with a window open to this site...just waiting for boss to fire me for lack of productivity :))

Like someone else said, I don't need to go anywhere else for news. Bubba is better than ESPN, The Post, The Times, etc. I get all the news I want right here plus the opinions of some very well informed people.

Those are some of the reasons I donated...but also to keep the site free from pop-up ads/advertizing banners. I've been on other sites where the message board is this tiny 4"x6" block in the center of my screen...the top, bottom and sides are filled with banners with different ads...and you get pop-ups everytime you go to different forums.

Anyway...donate if you can...but if your personal situation will not allow it then don't stress over it ....IMO

Monti,

The board is really free. There's no "If" about it. It's REALLY free. You're here. You've not offered a dime. It doesn't get more free. However, there IS a simple fact of life as well. The board is free to you. It's not free to the owners. It's not free to the mods -- I just spent $150 so I could acquire equipment I needed to conduct Doc interviews simply so the people who like it would be able to read it.

But, it's FREE to you.

As this board has grown, the bill to maintain it has grown. As I understand it, just to keep this board up costs several thousand a year due to the bandwidth needs. As the board was growing, the decision was made to allow people an easy option to help the site out if they wanted.

The Make a Donation button was that way.

It's never been a shame button. Though, to be fair, if YOU feel shame, it's probably because you feel you should do more. Others may feel you should do more as well. But, you can only be shamed by not doing what you know you should. You can't be shamed for doing what you believe is right, no matter what anyone else says.

You receive something in return for your donation in the form of gear that helps promote the site. We accept donations for other products as well, so each member always feels like he/she is always getting something in return. To be fair, I think if every regular board member -- visitor or poster -- contributed $10 a year, this board would NEVER go under -- not that it will now either :) -- and we'd be able to do even more for the community.

When we put the Google ads at the bottom of threads, we discussed using some of that money to provide a member who wins a contest here a trip to a Redskins game at some point. We're always trying to do more for the members here.

And that is only possible because the members here help make that possible.

You NEVER have to give a dime to the site to enjoy the site, Monti. But, if you feel shame for enjoying the site while never giving a dime to it, then, you need to ask yourself how come. You don't need to make others feel bad for feelings only you control.

I'm late on my promise...but Eric and I have exchanged emails on my "donation w/ benefits". I think it is a great deal. Hopefully you guys do make some money on the gear.

I went w/ 2 XL T-shirts (gotta slim down) and 2 hats for me......then 3 large T-shirts for the people I go to the games w/ (mother, sister & brother-in-law)....and one for Mrs. Grumpy Vet. Hell, she keeps our lil Skin alive while I'm at the game and when I come stumbling through the door after the game.

Hell of a deal. Perhaps in the future, I'll be able to contribute more.

Montilar,

I am the guy who added the 'donation' software, and the contributor ranks....and Ive never once thought of it as a 'shame' button.

Notice, I still have the button under my name, and *I* am the one who's been paying the bills that dont get covered by the generosity of the membership.

There has not been a year YET where I have not paid a SIGNIFICANT amount of money out of my pocket to keep this place afloat. Due to the added features, hardware, and bandwidth requirements the costs here have more than doubled every year.... hopefully 2005 will be the first year that the costs will remain stable.

I am sorry that you feel that there is a form of peer pressure to donate to Extremeskins, Montilar.... just remember, it is coming from people who only have the best of intentions for the community here.

Die Hard
February-9th-2005, 01:37 PM
I'll say this... and that's all I'm going to say on the subject.

I've been to a couple of Hogfests (unfortunately not this past season). Did I pay just like everyone else? You bet I did.

Do I run Hogfest? Is that my puppy? Obviously not. That's Tom's pet project.

But when I got there early both years... and things were getting setup for the party.... and there were still lots of things to do... you know what I did?

I offered my help.

Why? Because it's the right thing to do. Was I obligated to? Of course not... I could've cracked open a few cans of beers and got pissed drunk while a few other "volunteers" did the dirty work.

Why should I help out right? I mean, I paid my money... to have a good time. I didn't sign up to work.

But it's the right thing to do.

People will formulate their own opinions of everything. You need to do what you need to do.... because that's what you want to do. Regardless of anybody elses' opinion.

No one is forcing you.

At the end of the day.. it breaks down to this.

Every cent here gets invested back into the site, for programmers, webhosting costs, software licences, prizes, etc.

A simple donation is your way of paying for your own experience to be part of this.

There's about a group of 1000 members (including staff) who have contributed in donations so that ExtremeSkins.com may remain online.. for their own benefit truthfully.

And there's 27,000 other members who are basically living off the kindness of those 1000 strangers.

Make no mistake, without those 1000 strangers that so many here are benefitting from... there's no ExtremeSkins.com.

There's 999 other members who understand the reality. And that's why they may push.

I agree with Mark327. Yes, you're making a donation...but you get t-shirts, hats, or fleece in return. You're still getting a free
site and some merchandise in return.

What does ESPN Insider cost....$15 bucks a year? You can find out the same info here and more, even faster. To me, I'd rather
help the owners here, than to fatten the pockets at ESPN.

Regardless if you donate $1 or $100, you're helping everyone
here. I'd recommend that everyone step back and look at
what you take from here. I feel I haven't come close to playing
for the time I spend here or for the info I take.

I'd rather donate what I can, then not have this site at all.

I understand the costs involved in a business. The thing is, these guys aren't trying to make a profit. They're just don't
want to shut things down because of expenses.

1000 Thanks to Blade, Diehard, and the Mods. :applause:

Not only that Gary... but we strive to make this site bigger and better CONTINUALLY.

You guys want a beat reporter? You want access to Joe Gibbs? You want to be acknowledged as the largest and most informative group of Redskins fans... by the media and respected member of the REdskins organization? You want the most Redskins info... and the fastest (before National News networks?)

You gotta be more than just a "message board". You've got to be "THE" epicentre of what you do. When people think of the Redskins... ANYTHING Redskins... they need to think "ExtremeSkins.com".

That'll get you a beat reporter, insider access to players & coaches & staff, media passes, interviews, columns.

And to do that, we need to continually grow and expand what we offer and what we do.

And to do that... we need resources. Financial, technical, volunteered time and services.

Everyone needs to do their part... so everyone gets what they want. And we ALL want the same thing here.

So how about we start working together? This site already has about 1000+ members who decided to be part of it.

And in 5 years... look what we've built from a typical fan website.

We've got a strong group of committed people to help ExtremeSkins.com reach its potential. The groundwork is already here... you don't have to be a pioneer.

You just need to lend a helping hand.

I just looked up the top 20 posters and theres 4-5 that aren't listed as contributors. This doesn't include the staff members who may have a non-contributor status.

I'd say that takes care of Most of it right there. No guilt nor pressure being put on those who haven't. No hand waving nor jumping up an down. Nobody getting told what to do, ( by a woman or anyone else  Grow up). Simply reminding some that there is alot that goes into this site and maybe a little help would be nice. That we all are here enjoying the fruits of someon else's labor. Some can't and it is understood, but even a little bit can go a long way for the rest. As has been noted, only guilt or shame felt lies squarely on the shoulders of those that feel that way. 'Nuff said there I think. When or if you can. That's all. :)

I haven't read through all of this thread so i don't know if this has already been stated....

I have never felt pressured to make a donation by any of the mods around here (save maybe Bubba every now and then, indirectly, of course :) ) and I'm willing to bet that no other member has had any DIRECT pressure to donate either. You may want to take notice that this thread was started by a "normal" member (not that I'm saying Blondie is normal in any sense of the word) and not by the mods. That says so much to me about the quality of people that run this board and the quaility of the site itself that a "normal" member would encourage others to help out.

Keep up the good work guys.

We make the button prominent for a simple reason: A lot of people want to donate, but can't figure out how. And even with the big white button, people still can't always figure it out.

Trust me, it would be a lot easier to charge a nominal membership fee that to think of clever ways to 'shame' voluntary donations out of people.

Never really thought anything about it until I read this thread. Over the years I’ve bought shirts, hats and even Dvds from this cool site and still always had the “Make a Donation” button. Now don’t go telling anyone cause they might do something silly, like take my button away. It’s my button and I want to keep it. The point is you should donate or buy great merchandise here because you want to and you shouldn’t feel bad if you’re in a position where you can’t.

damn Direct-TV, and the phone company sending me bills trying to "shame me" because I use their service....

you know what, some of the holier than thou attitudes, really are pissing me off. I don't care if some of you dont appreciate the time & money spent to provide the masses with the best Redskin site on the net... no pop-us, no commercials, or corporate sponsors, no sign-up fees...... all is asked is a donation...... OMG how dare them... if you can't or WON'T help out fine...... but damn it don't post **** about a donation button!

if you feel guilty that's your problem...if you post as many times as some of the gripers, and use any of the services.... you should feel guilty!

Do you call up the PBS pledge drives or Jerry Lewis's telethon and lecture them about asking for donations:doh:

We make the button prominent for a simple reason: A lot of people want to donate, but can't figure out how. And even with the big white button, people still can't always figure it out.

EDIT: PM Die Hard

I would have donated a long time ago really but I dont like the Paypal scheme and avoid using it anymore. Is there a way to just put in my creditcard info to donate like I do when ordering items from other websites like mwave.com or newegg.com?

PM Die Hard regarding DVDs.

Regarding other options you can use to donate, you can send a check or money order as a donation as well. Unfortunately, I dont have any other way to offer credit card transactions other than Paypal at the moment.

This might be a dumb idea but maybe you could have exclusive content for the donators. Nothing entirely too big to take away from the site and split it into an upper and lower class, but small stuff such as past highlights that CrazyZeb has done, maybe a custom avatar (just a small one.. I think I already said in another thread that I didn't really like the avatars, I mean do I really need to see Bugel's upper body everytime bubba posts? ), the glowing names, etc.

We will NEVER have exclusive content for donations.

Ever. Other boards do that. We will NEVER do that. Any content we are able to achieve here will ALWAYS be available to each member of our community. We might make you REGISTER to see it, but we'd never make you donate to see it.

This will NEVER change here, even if we were to land an exclusive interview with Joe Gibbs. Our strength is in our membership and we will always reward you with whatever access and information we can get.

Art is correct about the content.

However, we have a lot of new ideas (gimmicks, features, functions) that will be implemented with our new upgrade to reward those who donate.... and keep this site alive and continually growing and upgrading.

I can't believe people would complain about a donation button on a free site:laugh:

If ExtremeSkins charged just 1$ per registration they'd have enough to pay for atleast half a decade of web hosting probably.

the donation button isn't the issue. I could care less about the button. It was a good idea. Let's clarify it farther.

blade and diehard made it to make it easy for someone to contribute. No biggie.

But by making it change to reflect that someone has contributed, or having "ranks" such as "contributer, silver contributer", that's what irritated me. It provides a "status". And I never said a thing about it until the latest "solicitation" thread. Actually the continual solicitation threads is what really irritates me. I look on soliciters like I do politicians. It should be legal to shoot 'em all....

It's no ones business if I or anyone else has donated. Or how much. Other than blade or die hards. And in fact if/when I donate (assuming another solicitation thread doesn't pop up from another board member when I deem it about time), it'd likely be anonymous. and the white button will still be there.

And then the almost monthly solicitation (Donate) threads put up by members (not blade or diehard I know).... when a soliciter calls or knocks on the door, I cuss them out, then hang up, or slam the door in their face. I DON"T do solicitations. For ANYONE.

And funny, after the two comments in this thread, I haven't been able to access the board for the last 4 or 5 days.. Until today..........

I could access any and everything else; but not this board. If I somehow made it past the front page, it almost always came up "server too busy". And when I asked elsewhere, no one else said they had trouble also.......

IF (and there shouldn't of been) there was a temporary "ban" in effect for voicing an opinion, I'd hope notificaton would be sent. But it was quite a coincidence in the timing...

Monti,

You're banned now. My mail is art@extremeskins.com so when you want to return, let me know and you can personally describe the difference between what a ban is and what you were experiencing that was not a ban.

Sound fun?

Henry
February-17th-2005, 04:00 PM
Monty, first it was the 'big white "shame" button.'

Now 'the button isn't the issue.'

Honestly, it looks to me like you're simply looking for a way to be contrary. You don't want to donate? Fine.

Don't.

But stop talking about it already. You don't dance very well.

Oh, and if you had been banned, you wouldn't have had to guess about it. Trust me.

if you "donated" your complaints maybe taking more seriously

right now you sound like a guy in a free soup line bitching about the service.

the contributor rankings are a way to say thank you, to those you helped the site out...

Donate?

I donate 6+ astoundingly insightful, poetic, spiritually moving posts a day. Blade/DH actually pay ME to post on this board! :silly:

P.S. For some reason when I was posting this the WWF wrestling character "Mr. Perfect" popped into my head. Don't ask me why, I haven't watched the WWF in over ten years, but it seemed apropos. :)

There, my 5 bucks is on its way to ExtremeSkins as we speak! And I feel GREAT!! Love the site, read it a lot more than I post, but with all the info and especially Bang's cartoons its well worth the small investment. Will probably donate a little again soon. GO SKINS!!!!! Now how can I get one of those little "Make A Donation" boxes under my name? Lol.:dallasuck

:point2sky thanks

I'm raising a family & I know how money can be tight..... when I have an extra few bucks... I'll donate. some people can't.... and that's okay, been there before myself.... but if you can thanks

There are other ways to contribute... volunteering and helping out with chores Die Hard and Blade need assistance with. Or if you have some skill that could make the board better, donate your time to help out.

This is a family in my eyes... and family helps each other out, when they can.

but don't complain and whine about being asked, especially when you use the site and never contibuted.... that is well,....

Some might say it shows pride in having supported a site that becomes a part of your daily life. That's how I view it. I'm PROUD to have "Platinum" associated with my name ... but I don't necessarily see it as status.

However, even if I DID see it as status I don't know what the big deal is. Showing how many posts we all have is a kind of status. Getting access to more and better avatars is status. What's wrong with that?

This board is what it is, Monty. Perhaps it's not for everyone ... but it is what it is.

Well stated Bubba. I'm here to help my Redskin brotheren anyway I can. Just hope we can keep this site running for a long, long time. Getting tired of reading the same story over and over again on the WashingtonPost when I can come here and learn of going on's much quicker and talk to some good people and other Redskin fans. We're in very limited supply up here in Northern Ohio so its good to have football talk with you guys and take a little vacation from all the :puke: (Cleveland Browns) fans. Good bit of Steeler folks up this way too and I can handle them, maybe cuz I was born it Pittsburgh (Lavar's town)!!! and of course there are quite a few Dallas fans I gotta deal with but theyre retards so I dispose of them quickly when it comes to matching wits. Anyway, keep posting........and again, :dallasuck

Chocolate Chip Cookies)

Ingredients
2/3 cup sugar (a mixture of brown and white sugar as you prefer)
½ cup butter, softened
1 large egg
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 oz / 170 g sweet or semisweet chocolate chips

Method
1. Preheat oven to 190 deg C / 375 deg F.
2. Cream butter with sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well.
4. Add baking soda, salt and flour and mix well.
5. Add chocolate chips.
6. Place the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
7. Drop by rounded large teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
8. Bake the chocolate chip cookies for 8 to 10 minutes until light brown. Always try with a few cookies to check whether the dough is OK.
9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for a few minutes, then move the cookies to a wire rack.

The best result is obtained if you use chocolate chips made especially for baking. You may also cut chocolate bars into small chips, but these will melt during baking (as on the photo above).

Variations
You may add nuts, smarties or chopped white chocolate in addition to the chocolate chips

Enjoy!
