Rangers: Delgado offered four years, $40 million

The Rangers met with agent David Sloane on Friday and offered his client, slugger Carlos Delgado, a four-year contract worth over $40 million. "[Rangers owner] Tom Hicks said that he was going to come to Puerto Rico and give it his best shot," Sloane told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram via e-mail. "He did all that and more. We will be talking to them again [today] in an attempt to sustain the positive momentum we generated today." The Newark Star-Ledger printed the salary figures and reported that Delgado would inform the Rangers of his decision before the end of the weekend.
The Mets, Marlins and Orioles all offered Delgado a three-year deal, but the slugger has been seeking a four-year contract similar to what Troy Glaus and Richie Sexson received. With the Rangers stepping up and offering that extra year, we have to believe they have moved themselves up the ladder in the bidding war. We'll continue to update Carlos' situation as news warrants.
Would you pay him $40 mill for 4 years?
I would and then some more $$ to get him here, but it would have been alot better to get a pitcher.

Nobody wants to go to Baltimore to finish in obscurity behind the Yankees and Red Sox.
Yeah the Mets have spent a lot of money, but they haven't turned recent spending sprees into any World Series titles.
The Braves are a much better model for the Nationals.
Develop home grown talent and then fill in with quality free agents like Tim Hudson that can just come in and win games.

No Mets, No Rangers. It's a 2 team race now, and the Marlins don't even have a guarenteed 4th year. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1973076
