View Full Version : What are your feelings on Buck & Chenier

My guess is that the general perception is that these guys suck, but I really enjoy listening to them. While they pale in comparison to the national broadcast teams on TNT and ESPN I feel that Buck & Chenier provide entertaining play by play and commentary for us Wiz fans.

Buck has coined three of my favorite catchphrases to use in my everyday vernakular. You guys can probably guess them. Thats right I'm talking about the "dagger", "backbreaker" and "how do you like that?" calls. He has an unusual obsession though over 3 pointers. He makes it a point every game to tell us how many 3 pointers a certain player has made on the year after a successful attempt. Buck is also prone to zone out on certain plays. Sometimes there is so much dead air that I think I'm listening to Jim Rome. Buck also struggles in letting go bad calls by the refs. I understand he's a fan, but there are times when he needs to let go. During the course of last game it sounded like Buck actually embarrassed Chenier because he was complaining so much about a call while an official was standing right in front of him.

Chenier is pretty good as well. Occasionally though he sounds like has marbles in his mouth. He's usually good at putting Buck in his place though when he breaks off on one of his long winded tangents against the refs. Chenier, like Buck, often sounds jaded by past Wizards teams. They both can be doom and gloomers. Most importantly though these guys are Wizards fans. They provide an interesting blend of humor (unintentional or not) and straight forwardness. Unfortunately, I'm often less underwhelmed by the analysis Chenier provides.

Through all their shortcomings I hope Comcast keeps both of these guys around. It's only right. They were here for the 13 win seasons, and they deserve to be around for future successful Wizards seasons. Anyways, I really am curious about everyone elses thoughts on our hometown broadcast team.

Phil Cheiner is very calm and almost boring but you have to respect his personality and his overall knowledge of the game. He has been here doing Wiz games for decades (it seems)...

As for Buckhead...this guy is a fan and is passionate but sometimes he is very tacky during his broadcasts and seems like a 14 year old kid who is excited for Xmas to come...personally i liked Mel Proctor much better...

The ridiculous thing about Buckhead that makes me hate him is that when things go against us he will scream "Dagger" or "backbreaker"!!!!!! I mean do it when its in our favor but dont piss me off and yell "dagger" when Chauncey Billups is hitting the game winning shot...nobody wants to hear that and it flat out pisses me off...that reason alone is why I could care less if they bring him back next year.

Honestly, they are really all I know, so it's hard for me to make an objective opinion. I enjoy watching the games on television and really don't watch many nationally telelivised games but I do remember not liking the announcers as much when we had our nationally televised game last week....I think that was more of a sense of familiarity with Phil and Buck....who knows..

I like them. Their two guys I could see sitting next to me on a couch watching the Wiz.

I think Buck is funny when he starts on the refs calls and Chenier has to calm him down. I find their play by play no to bad its better than listening to most of the football anouncers and the fact thaty their fans make it that much better when we are winning.

I enjoy them for the most part. Yeah, Phil stumbles through the "Keys to the Game" every game and Buck thinks that there is a foul or a traveling violation in the Wizards favor everytime down the court. The thing I like about them is that they seem to get along well and they are having fun this year. It's their first taste of a winning basketball team in a while, so they need to get used to it.

I remember Mel Proctor. He went back to Denver, but he was a good guy.

I like this team of Buck and Chenier. Phil is very knowledgable, has a calm demenour and very little ego. Always is very insightful.

Buck has a lot of enthusiasm. I like that a lot. I think the two of them work well together

I agree with the sentiment that these guys do work well together. That's something I wanted to touch on in my original post, but I failed to mention it. I could be completely wrong, but these guys seem like good friends off the court. This chemistry induitably assists them in cultivating their unique on air banter.

I like them fine. I like how Buck is a fan, you want that from your home guy, but he shouldn't get too carried away with bad calls. I love those 3 catch phrases too, of course, not when he uses them when the other team puts us away. I find myself though yelling DAGGER!!! at random made shots for the Wiz in the 2nd quarter! Chenier is good too, he stumbles a little bit, but knows a lot about the game. They work well together too, you can tell they're buddies.

I like them. Yeah they have some WIzards homerism but, why not? :)

I don't know if you guys heard this on last night's broadcast but apparently Buck has a bad habit of yelling out fouls before the refs do and they don't take too kindly to it....apparently before one game recently one of the refs put a whistle done in front of Buck on the table....I think Phil gets embarrased by some of Buck's antics but I think they are good friends and they are always talking about where they went to dinner, etc.

I did hear them talking about the whistle incident with the ref. Thats funny, the dagger one is my dads favorite will be playing ball out front with my little brother and he'll yell it whenever he makes a shot.

I think they do a fine job but their homerism is so blatantly obvious at times. It's actually not that bad of a thing since it's mostly Wizards fans watching anyway, but it definitely wouldn't work at a national level. :)

they had to put up with some crappy teams..and still find something to talk about. I like them...and they are enjoying this season.

Buck used to be a ref. Thats why he is always calling the fouls out.

I forgot to mention the thing I enjoy about them most this year is that they are really enthusiastic about this club. They get me pumped up to watch the team play because they are pumped up to see the team play. They're having a good time this year and it shows.

They aren't the best in the world, but they are genuine and want the wizards to win

Buck also joked last night about how he thinks the league is mad at him, or ignores him, because he calls to complain about the refs too much. That's awesome, but I'm sure it doesn't really help much.

They shouldn't and probably wouldn't be like that if they are on a national level....you should expect your local sportcasters to be homers....I don't want an announcer bashing my team every night :puke:

They aren't exactly Myron Cope here....... but they should be slight homers.

i like how the catch phrases are usually used as positives for us now. For so long dagger meant Micheal "the Animal" Smith turned the ball over, or how do u like that meant Cherokee Parks just got posterized. But its a good feeling to sit through years of that and now hear Buck able to use his zingers at the expense of the opposing team.

I remember when MJ played for us and in his first year I think against the suns (?) and Jordan hit the game winning shot.. I remembers Buckhantz (Sp) commentery from those 5 secs or something down to the shot and saying he did it again! over and over again :D

He might not be the best but I enjoy listening to them

   I'm hurting here. I will always hold a special place in my heart for the front line of Obina Ekezie, "The Animal" and Cherokee. They may have lost damn near every game they suited up for together, but they did so with grace and dignity (not counting Animals DWI and assault charges).

That was the Cleveland game. That could be my all time favorite Buck call. I had the clip on my old computer. Solid dual fist pumps by MJ and Rip after the shot too. I will never ever forget that game,

I've always wondered how MJ took sharing the spotlight at the end of that game w/ Rip. If that was the beginning of the strain in their relationship.
