There's a lot of polls on dietary preferences right now, so I figured I would ask about something that I am heavily under the influence of, right this moment - painkillers. But I'm too drugged up, to do a complete poll listing, so I ask you, what is your Painkiller of choice ?

I actually hate taking Aspirin, etc.

When I do have to take that stuff, I'll take Excedrin. It's good stuff.

Sorry, my bad. I should have specified about Prescription painkillers ? Like if you could ask your doctor for any of them, which would it be ? Lke Percocet, etc.....But I am also curious to hear about over-the-counter PK's as well, since I use those a lot

When I had my wisedom teeth taken out, they gave me valium. They could have removed my leg with a chainsaw and I wouldn't have cared one bit. That stuff was great.

I'd be careful...I've taken care of a lot of guys who've gotten horribly addicted.

Do you like your liver? Want to experience jaundice and psychosis in your later years?

Like I said, be careful...not trying to lecture, just speaking from experience.

And as to the topic at hand, forget the p.o. meds, demerol is wonderful :)

Yes. I had 3 ruptured disks in my neck, hurt like hell, couldn't sleep for the better part of a year. Believe me, I RELIED on darvocet, perocet, etc... you can easily fall into that trap.

I don't use painkiller's... I don't even really use tylenol or advil... Unless the pain is extremely severe I don't see myself using them...

Pain is weakness leaving the body, folks :)

Interesting theory, however I prefer to make PAIN leave the body immediately, then later on, find other ways to make WEAKNESS leave my body ;)

before August, my only real experience with pain killers was with whatever the oral surgeon gave me before standing on my jaw to rip out my wisdom teeth. i didn't need anything stronger than advil afterwards. in august, had some surgery (again, the pre-op drugs were sweet as hell) and needed pain killers afterwards. typically i'm not affected by drugs that much...don't get drowsey or high, but vicodan knocked me on my ass. i took them as prescribed for 3 days, and then just stopped. didn't want to fall into that trap that tarhog was talking about. i do still have a refill left though :).

That's my practice. Always have to have a stash in case of emergency. The rainy day drug.

The few times I've been prescribed a painkiller (Codeine and Vioxx), I've quit using them and gone to Aleve. That stuff kills pain for me like nothing else.

I ruptured a disc (and herniated another) in my back in September. Doc put me on Vicodin...it made me puke. Imagine barely being able to bend over....and now ya gotta get up out of bed and hurl into the toilet. Not fun. After that I just took 4 Advil every 4 hours.

I don't have a ton of experience, but I have to say that I do know Percocet isn't worth a damn. I got my wisdom teeth (all 4) cut out of my skull this morning, so this thread is very appropriate. If this post doesn't make sense, it's cause I'm on percs right now. It only really dulls the pain and makes my tired and nonsensical. They're OK, but they aren't really helping me all that much. I feel like I got hit in the face with a sledgehammer.

Mick, I have had 3 major surgeries on my neck/back. I have 4 heirnaited discs in my back l2-5 and c-6 in my neck. I have severe and perminant nerve damage all over. As well as the usual arthritis and scar tissue all over.

Having said that the pain meds of choice for me are Roxicodone 15mgs I get 150 a month. I also take Kadian 60 mgs and get 168 a month. The Roxy is equal to 3 percocets for IR pain and the Kadian is time released Morphine over 12 hours. I also take Bextra now and I think they will soon be taking that off the market just like viox and celebrex that I used to take for arthritis.

Severe and chronic pain is a *****. I was declared handicapped and could sit at home every day and wallow in the pain and collect disability. I choose to fight the pain and go to work for as long as I can. The Spartan blood that flows thru my veins will not allow me to be a mushroom feeding off the system. The meds help me take the edge off the pain so I can be a productive member of society. Until you limp a week in the shoes of someone in chronic pain you can't possible judge them.

Same type of thing here, I was working construction. I was setting trusses and up on a cat walk 12' in the air which snapped in about a 6' section and I fell 12' head first onto a plywood subfloor with very little give (though much better than concrete I guess :D).

I started with Vicodin and eventually just stopped them all together for about a year and a half or so while I was doing the doctor/physical therapy thing 3 days a week. I then decided that I needed/wanted to work, I tried taking nothing for a few months while working. It just didn't work, so back to the meds I went.

I then started school under a worker's comp claim after being told I couldn't work a "physical" job any longer and got certified as a Microsoft Systems Engineer. Since going back to pain meds I've finished school, I was offered a job at my school and haven't been out of work since for more than a 3 day span right after September 11th in which I was laid off. I'm now employeed as an IT Director for a resort developer and though still on pain meds, am functioning pretty well. As it relates to my family life, I get along much better with my wife when I'm not in pain and taking it out on everyone around me.

As stated, I took Vicodin and/or Percocet mostly. I've even had Oxycontin (which made me feel too "out of it") for a while but eventually moved to Methadone which I've been taking for a little over 2 years now. They've worked the best for me so far. I've read that doctors have a tough time prescribing it simply because of the misperceptions attached to the word "Methadone" and some simply don't realize the benefits that are provided by using it.

I do not like taking prescription painkillers but after a stomach surgery I had they hooked me up to a morphine IV for 2 days. Well that stuff was sweet. I did not even realize I was in the hospital. I had surgery on New Years Eve and well that night I was calling all my friends from my hospital room wishing them a Happy New Year.

Not many people knew I was having surgery. I kept it quiet and so I kept getting all these party invites and I told them the hospital gave me better stuff than you will ever have.

After I went home they prescribed me heavy drugs but I stuck with Tylenol, and less than a week later I was back driving my car etc. The only thing I will still not do is wear a short shirt. The scar is still noticeable.

Ones that I have had a bad reaction too (Got sick....hurled)
TYLOX
HYDROCODNE Cough Syrup ( I think i took too much at once, 3 days ago. My cough just returned...I gotta make sure I use a tea spoon, not TABLE SPOON! )

Ones that make me stay awake and have a cool buzz (like 2 drinks..yes I'm a lightweight!)
Vicoden
Tylenol #3 or #4
Dilauded (Serious stuff btw...knocks most folks for a loop.)
Phynergrn(SP) /codine cough syrup

Ones that just make my stomach queezy and nothing else:
Percocet
Percodan

Ones that work as a pain killer and just plain knock me out:
Morphine
Demoral

Not a pain killer but does work:
Ambien.......

I usually do not take OTC's....I don't have chronic pain so I don't need too. I just have had some oral surgurys, hernia surgury, wisdom teeth, and most recently: bronchitis. Oh and a sprained foot. (That REALLY %@#%*&! hurt!)

Ding, Ding, Ding! We have a winner. I had this after my ear surgery and it was the best in terms of making me feel good. Of course it also knocked me out.

Darvocet just knocked me out.

Codeine (Tylenol 3) has no effect on me, even if I pop more that the prescribed amount, so if a doctor prescribes that to me nowadays I won't even get the prescription filled.

Ask for Tylenol #4. It has more codeine in it. I believe its either 15mg or 20mg per pill.

PS
I took a 3/4 of a TEASPOON of my Hydrocodone cough syrup last night and I did not get sick! I also slept pretty well too. Taste is AWFUL though. eeeeyuckkkk!

Several years ago I was thrown from a horse. The fall caused the last four discs in my back to rotate slightly.

The pain was unbelievable. The doctor gave me Percodan. The accident happened in May. I do NOT remember that entire summer. I truly did not go anywhere or do anything that entire summer because I was very drugged. I THINK I moved from the couch to the bed and that is about it. My doctor had to slowly get me off those and lessen the strength of the pain killers that followed.

I am deathly allergic to Morphine and Dorvon.

If I have a precription pain medicine I MUST take, then the one I can tolerate the most is vicatin.

Very enjoyable after sergury, but the knot in my arse from them jabbin me every 4 hours lasted for two months.

I also have three screwed up discs in my lower back. The most I've taken for it was 500 mil naproxium sodium (sp) which is an anti inflamitory. I went to a pain managment clinic a few years ago. It's amazing what some small changes in you life can do for a bad back with out drugs. Not to say I don't have some bad days, but only take an Aleve once in a blue moon.

I hate pain meds. I like them wasy too much, and rather deal with some pain. When you don't feel any pain, your more apt to reinjur yourself IMO.
