VENUE: Conseco Fieldhouse
GAME: Washington Wizards (23-15) at Indiana Pacers (20-18).
TIME: Saturday, 8 p.m. EST.
The Washington Wizards will miss one of their best players for the next four to six weeks. On Friday, they proved that they can win without him.
The Wizards continue adjusting to life without Larry Hughes as they visit the Indiana Pacers.
Hughes, who averages 21.2 points and a team-best 5.3 assists per game, broke his thumb in last Saturday's 108-103 win over Phoenix. The Wizards were blown out in their next two games at San Antonio and Dallas, snapping a season-high seven-game winning streak.
However, Washington rebounded Friday with an impressive 118-109 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
"Tonight was the night for us to really come back and say, 'Look, we lost a really good player, but we've got to pick it up and still play,"' said Jared Jeffries, who scored 13 points.
Antawn Jamison had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Juan Dixon added 26 points for the Wizards, who scored a season-high 65 in the first half. Hughes, who sat on the bench for the first time since sustaining the injury, gave his team a pep talk during the shootaround.
"He gave us a speech and told us we need to get back on our feet," said Gilbert Arenas, who scored 23 points and made 17 of 20 free throws for Washington. "We can sit here and sulk all day. Sulk don't give you no wins."
Dixon had started for the Wizards against the Spurs and Mavericks, but returned to his role as sixth man against the Raptors. Jarvis Hayes started and scored 16 points.
Forward Kwame Brown, who was placed in the injured list Jan. 12, had his ankle re-examined and will miss at least another three weeks for Washington. Brown has played in just 14 games this season.
The Pacers beat the Eastern Conference-leading Miami Heat 106-100 in overtime on Friday for their fourth win in six games.
Jamaal Tinsley scored 30 points, including a jumper to force overtime, and Jermaine O'Neal added 26 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Indiana. Tinsley is averaging 29.7 points in his last three games.
"Miami has the best record in the conference right now and we're expecting to see them in May," said Reggie Miller, who had 18 points for Indiana. "This was a statement game."
Pacers forward Austin Croshere did not play because of a stomach flu.
Indiana CEO Donnie Walsh said Friday that Ron Artest, who was suspended for the season after fighting with Detroit fans on Nov. 19, would be allowed by the NBA to return to practice next week. However, he also stressed that Artest would still not be allowed to play.
"It will definitely increase our intensity and the execution level in practice having an All-Star player return," reserve guard Anthony Johnson said.
Stephen Jackson was suspended for 30 games and is due to return Wednesday at Boston. O'Neal's 25-game suspension was reduced to 15 by an arbitrator, and he has been back since Dec. 25.
STANDINGS: Wizards - 2nd place, 4½ GB, Southeast Division. Pacers - 3rd place, 3 GB, Central Division.

2003-04 SEASON SERIES: Pacers, 2-1.
LAST MEETING: Feb. 20; Pacers, 96-87. At Washington, Miller scored 24 points, and O'Neal had 19 points and 10 assists for the Pacers, who rallied from an eight-point fourth quarter deficit. Arenas led the Wizards with 27 points.

Well at least Kwame will only be out another 3 weeks. Maybe he won't rush himself, or isn't rushed back and he'll be 100% for us in the second half of the season.

Well, Juan is out with the flu :cold: but the Pacers also have Bender and Croshere out tonight, so it more than evens out....
I liked the success of going to Haywood down below, he scored on three consecutive possessions....I hope to see more of that in the second half....
This has been the most vanilla game I have seen from the Wiz and their opponent so far this year....hopefully, it will pick up in the Wiz's favor in the next half....
Go Wiz!

Now see, that is what I was talking about in the "raptors/wizards" thread. The better teams in the league are the ones that can beat other teams with or without their key players injured. They know how to reach into the bench and have reserves step when they need to. With everyone healthy, I can seriously see this team being the best in the East.

wow
Peeler really filled in the for Dixon. I hadnt seen that from him all year.
Amazing win. I really did see that happening.
More amazing is we should have won easy because we missed a ton of FTs and the refs were just obserd tonight.
Haywood is really starting to look nice.
Jefferies was huge on defense.
What a team win.

Very impressive, especially considering we didn't have Kwame. Dump on Kwame all you want (its justified), but he dominated Jermaine O'Neal every time he played against him last year. Without that post defender, we had to withstand 38 from J.O.

Even though he scored 38 Jefferies did a solid job defending him when he was assigned to him....and good job from EJ to put Jefferies on O'Neal at the end of the game.....

True Zen so True. The 2 biggest opponents Kwame gets up for seems to be Jermaine and Curry for the Bulls. but people, Anthony Peeler can shoot the rock if only he gets playing time and in a groove. Peeler can really shoot the rock when he gets time and open looks.
Like I said, we have guards that can shoot all around the board. but what we need is better post play...

I love JJ's game this year. He's been hampered by a bunch of cheap early foul calls in the last few games, but he's improved on everything I hated about his game last year, and has become an excellent versatile "glue" player. The only thing that's pissing me off about JJ is his horrid FT % this year.

Thats pretty much why I didnt see us winning this one. I figure O'neal would light us up and score the winning points if it was close.
That was an amazing win. I didnt think AJ would make it all the way to the hoop before time ran out. .4 seconds left.

Haywood is starting to look like he is going be our starting center for a while.
4 clutch Fts near the end of the game. I thought Parish was at the line. He's shooting them in a similar style.
3 post moves in a row to tie the game after O'neal went off.
Blocked shots.
Comes back from being hurt.

The one guy I'm REALLY starting to like is Jared Jeffries. He was playing O'Neal real good all night, along with Brendan Haywood who I'm becoming a big fan of as well. Yeah O'Neal was ripping them up but, that is Jermaine O'Neal, he is one of the best Centers in the league, and he just does that to people.
Obviously what HAS to improve is our Free Throw shooting. We got a bit lucky tonight, Indiana missed some shots they don't usually miss, but we need to improve here. Had we made half the FT's we missed this game would never have gone down to the manner that it did.

That's all changing this year. As a matter of fact. The Wiz win was on the front page of the NBA section on ESPN. Tilted "Will to win".
Furthermore. alot of analyst are buzzing more about the Wiz also. At the pace the Wizards are on and alot of role and bench players getting quality time while guys like Kwame,Hughes and the others are out. This team is really building character, confidence and the will to win regardless.
When the last time that's happen. Also, we have good young players on the rise that's learning to play together and a coach that may be around for awhile. And with the Princeton offense in it's 2nd year. Years down the road will definitely start paying off like they are this year. it's the same with the Redskins. The Wiz didn't have any coaches or players that stuck around and started to build a foundation. Why? cause the Jerk Wes Unseld traded all the players and was a terrible GM, period. Thanks GOD he's gone..

The Wiz didn't have any coaches or players that stuck around and started to build a foundation. Why? cause the Jerk Wes Unseld traded all the players and was a terrible GM, period. Thanks GOD he's gone..
Don't get me started.

We have the same record as Cleveland.
24-15
This is a pride game. I challange for top dog.
So was the Indi game. Man, if you look at the teams we have beat and the teams we havent. There arent a lot of teams left for us to win against. SA and Dallas, we were adjusting to not having Hughes. Miami got us early and got some great reffing that last game.
Anyway, Who will take this one ? I know believe we can take them even without Hughes.
If we beat them, man we are just huge.
Then all we have to do is prove we can beat Det, who lost to Chicago tonight, and Miami. I believe we have beaten everyone else in our conference at least one.
Chicago is still on a roll. I dont have a gauge on how good they are yet.
If we are fully healthy, I think we are better then Miami. We have a good shot at getting to the show this year.
This is what it was like last time we did it. Under dogs. We snuck up on everyone. Bullet fever baby.
Bullet fever, it happen to me every year.
Bullet fever, and this is the one.
Bullet fever, Got by the iceman.
Bullet fever, and Phil was doneeeeee.
It an't over till the fat lady sings....
GO WIZ
