View Full Version : Here's why there should be no regrets about the #1 pick we gave up for coles

A oft-heard them in that like 50 page long Coles thread is that the real sting of all this is that we gave up our first round pick in 2003 as a result of this coles fiasco

well, here's why we really shouldn't be bothered

let's look at how that played out

we gave up that pick because we KNEW the top two wideouts charles rogers and andre johnson would be long gone by the time we picked (and they were, #2 and #3 off the board, respectively) -- we also didn't feel we could get whomever the 3rd best WR was -- that was the whole rationale behind pulling the trigger on this deal in the first place

here's how it unfolded....

We didn't pick in the first roun

Our first pick that year was in the second round

We were pleasantly surprised to find that Taylor Jacobs, whom we had projected as a first rounder, was still there

After debating whether or not to take him or Mike Doss, we went with him -- If we had never traded our first rounder, he (or some equally talented WR) would presumably have been our pick in Round 1 as well

Anyway, because Jacobs was available in Round 2, and we had the Ol' Ball Coach calling the shots, we didn't take Doss

Because we didn't take Doss, we now have Taylor as our safety

It all works out in the end

now, in case you missed it in the other coles thread....

Nice Post. I feel a little better now, lol. I just hope we can draft Big Mike or Braylon this year.

or you could say we missed

Ty Warren
Michael Haynes
Jerome McDougle
Calvin Pace
Willis Mcgahee
William Joseph
Anquan Boldin

and now have no #1 WR and have no clue what Jacobs is, when even Bethel Johnson I think has outperformed him.
:D

well, as the saying goes, there's always half full/half empty

if you really insist on beating yourself up about this, these aren't the guys i'd actually use -- heck, you might as well say coles cost us T.O. -- since if we didn't go after coles in 2003, you can imagine T.O. would have been priority number one in 2004 (or we would have really found a way to trade gardner for owens when that was on the table midseason in 2003)

i prefer to look at things in the half full mode -- you'll sleep better, trust me

Maybe he wouldnt of known how mcuh Brunell sucked, and thought he was getting a Vet QB

not saying we would have gotten him, but we would have tried

also, we were rumored to be THISCLOSE to a gardner for owens trade in the middle of spurrier's second year -- the danny would have made it happen if he really felt there was a need for it, which he probably would have if there was no coles on this team

hey, like i said though, sean taylor's path to the skins goes through coles

Come on. Anyway you look at it, giving up the 13th pick in the draft for a guy we cut two years later isn't good.

true, i think Owens would definitely have been at least intrigued about the possibility of coming here -- no one knew what crap Brunell would be, and Gibbs was the talk of the town

I'm not buying it. After this draft we will have given up a 9th overall and a 13th overall and a 15th overall & tons of bonus money in the last 5 drafts on WR's. All we'll have to show for it is whoever we draft this time and he is, by definition, an unknown on the NFL level. So he could bust. Maybe we get a pick for Gardner. But still, a horrible use of resources. It doesn't matter what the reasons were..it's just not good.

And like it or not, after all the smack that was run on this board, the New York Jets and their fans got over on us. There is no way around that.

ANOTHER sad day in the history of the Redskins. Too many, too often.

Coach Gibbs will figure something out.

I'm not worried at all.

After all, he drafted Cooley right. I never even heard of the guy, and he turned out to be awesome in his rookie year.

Shawn Taylor, another badass in his rookie season.

I'm sure Gibbs and company will get it done.
