View Full Version : Just Sign Smoot, Already

Look, enough of this paying FA premium salaries. Don't pay that wife-beater Rolle 15 mil or even 12 mil signing bonus if we can get Smoot to stay for that much. Whatever happened to rewarding those who work hard for the team?
If we sign Rolle for that kind of money, the FO has doomed this team over the long term in ways that will take years to correct. All current players will forgo any loyalty they had to an organization they percieve as valueing FA acquisitions more than their own players.

What loyalty?
You think Smoot asking for $14 M is showing loyalty?
You've got loyalty backwards.
A loyal player doesn't wait to sign until free agency to gauge his fair market value.
You think Smoot hasn't signed because the Skins haven't made a reasonable offer?
Gibbs has said repeatedly., he's having diffculty signing players because they all want to explore free agency and wait to see what the other guys get.
I'm not sure why you're having problems with this.

I prefer Smoot as well. I would rather keep our own. I do think the Redskins the last few years have had a "the grass is always greener" mentality" and it hasn't been as productive as anyone would like, except our opponents. Smoot isn't innocent in this, if he was offended by a 7 figure signing bonus, as Champ was... he is not fighting to be on the team. Still, Smoot... unlike Champ during his last year, fought on the field and I would like to see us keep him.

Well, what this hinges on is whether or not one thinks Rolle is significantly better than Smoot. I have no problems with Smoot testing the waters out, nor do I fault the FO for doing so.
Where I do have a problem is that if we have a guy on the roster who is asking for 14 mil and has put in a more than solid performance for us and a flashy free agent who may be slightly better, is older, and we're looking to pay 15 mil for .... the FO looks as though it values FAs differently than its own players. Guys will look at that as an example of how Snyder and Co. covet other talent more than thier own. It's been a knock against him for a while and truthfully, if this deal goes through, it may be justified.

When smoot looks around in the FA market and sees he is not going to get tha $14+ Million dollar bonus he is looking for he will be resigned at a lower number (10 million or around there).

It goes both ways but I'd rather have Smoot at $12 Mil or even $15 Mil than Rolle for $15 Mil.

I prefer Smoot, and I think we need to stick with what got us the #3 defense...
However, I do no think this is a question of loyalty.

We are setting a standard here to where we rather bring in players then pay our own. How can we have any level of stability if we always are willing to bring someone else in at a higher salary?
It seems as if people come to washington to get rich then go somewhere else to get thier ring.. It's SAD.

I agree with Synergist. Seems like if Smoot has performed well for our defense, reward him and keep him. Don't pay someone else the $ you could pay our own guy.
I think that things wouldn't be like this if we were winning games. Guys would want to stay rather than see what else they could be getting in FA.
Smoot wants to be here and we want him here. Let's work this one out, Danny. Maybe a ride on Redskin1 and a Eastern's Motors deal.

I thought the $15M rumor for Rolle was shot down. ESPN said it's false, and the Post is saying $12M. I seriously doubt we offer Rolle a bigger contract than we offered Smoot at this point. If we have offered Rolle more money, maybe it's because he's a former Pro Bowler and Smoot isn't, or maybe the rumor about a couple coaches not wanting Smoot re-signed was true. I agree though that loyalty goes both ways. If Smoot was loyal to us, he wouldn't put his asking price clearly out of our reach. If he was worth a $14M SB, and we couldn't afford him, then that is all on the front office. But he is not worth that much, not near that much. If he's gonna refuse to take our offer, and go sign with a lousy team for a huge bonus, there's no loyalty in that. I'll take a CB who's just as good or better for the same contract we offered Smoot anyday.

I see alot of you guys actually believe that Rolle is actually being offered a $15 Million bonus. IF he is, then yes, I would agree with most of you about the Home-grown loyalty thing. But come on, you know damn well Rolle is not getting a $15 Million bonus or anywhere in that neigborhood. The FO is not that stupid (*crosses fingers*). If Smoot wants $14 million, then fine let him get it. He won't be getting it here. Smoot is determined to test the market and if we wait on his watch, then we would be playing the "we shoulda" game. We're not playing that. With the unusually high profile FAs this year, sitting on your hands is something that will be heavily regretted.:2cents:

This is in part a result of the Skins FA ways.
Player: I am so lucky to play for Dan Snyder, all the players in the league wish Dan Snyder would offer them a contract. Dan is going to show me the money.
Snyder Dan: Hey player, we like you, we want you to re-sign with us, I'll give you a $8m signing bonus, that seems pretty fair.
Player: $8m? Why so cheap Dan, where is the love? I read the papers, I know how you give out the big paydays, now stop kidding around.
Snyder Dan: Those big signing bonuses you see in the paper are for free agents. You see, I have to give out the big bonuses to get those guys to come here. But you are already here and right now I am the only person you can negotiate with, so I can make you a much more reasonable offer.
Player: So what you are telling me is that I need to become a FA.

i love smoot and think he is a very servicable #2 corner but not worth more than an 8 mil. signing bonus.

THAT'S pretty funny.
An ABOVE AVERAGE CB TURNING DOWN a $10 Million bonus is somewhat amusing in its own right also, no?

well if smoot wants 14 and we got 12 on the table, why not just split the diff, give him 13, take it out of the base salary a little at a time, and call it a day.....
i'd rather that then take a chance on rolle and see smooty in the silver and blue....

It won't be a popular opinion, but I'd almost rather have Rolle. I love Smoot, but he plays too far off the ball for my liking. I think Rolle reunited with his old d-coordinator could have as good a year as Smoot. I could see Rolle coming in here having the same impact as Springs did.
Having said that, I hope the rumor that they are offering Rolle more than they did Smoot isn't true. You can't stiff your own people that way.

Agreed... Gibbs himself has basically called Smoot Mr. Redskin... if they choose to purse Rolle, and not resign Smoot (FOR LESS MONEY NONETHELESS) I will be shocked and extremely pissed off.

I apologize for jumping the gun with this thread.
It appears the "15 million SB" number that has been batted around this site stems from an unsubstantiated rumor from a :puke: Lenny P article on the situation.
I shoulda taken it with a grain of salt.
Nevertheless, I still stand by the spirit in which the thread was started. In other words, lets do all we can to resign Smoot before giving up and taking a FA for almost or as much money. He's a character guy who is a good presence in the locker room. Oh yeah, he's also a good corner too.

He played that far off the ball because that is what the coaches told him to do. He couldn't freewheel like that every other play if it wasn't part of the scheme. It would be corrected very quickly if he was out there doing his own thing.

Uh, no that would be the players also. The coach calls the plays, but you need players to execute them. Do you think we would have the #3 D if our front line still had Wilkinson and Stubblefield? Don't think so.

You think maybe leaking the Rolle story maybe our way of getting Smoot to Shizzle or get off the Pizzle?
My conspiracy theories are rampant, but you really can't the news this time of the year.
Agents leaking BS, FO's leaking BS. Its making me grey.
