View Full Version : Why Gregg Williams Likes Rolle over Smoot
BD

Here's a thought on why Gregg Williams might, if reports are correct, prefer Samari Rolle over Fred Smoot.
We all know that in Williams' defense, the Corners are asked to do a lot more than cover - they are also key in applying pressure to the QB.
We saw that with Springs last year. The guy had SIX sacks, just by himself. That's an incredible number for a CB.
Last year, when Fred Smoot was called on to blitz, he clearly didn't have the size or form to do the job as well as Springs. I think we can all remember seeing Smoot launch himself into the air, and come down on nothing. In fact, Smoot had ZERO sacks - both last year and for his career.
One advantage Rolle might have from Gregg Williams' perspective is the ability to blitz the passer. During his tenure in Tennessee, Williams used Rolle occasionally in that role, and he had 8.5 sacks over four seasons.
Just a thought. Personally, I prefer Smoot by far for the price, but this might be one reason why Williams likes Rolle.

that sounds like a pretty plausible reason to me

True.. but Smoot is younger and can learn :)

....but he can't learn size or durability. I have mentioned this about Smoot before. He's got the heart to blitz and play run support, just not the build.

Good point, I didn't realize Smoot didn't have any sacks, however I do remember Smoot launching himself at the cornerback on some occasions.

Here's an idea why;
he'd be the best #2 corner in the league. :D

Yeah, I remember Smoot coming up empty handed on a few blitzes.
But I didn't know he didn't have any sacks.

I agree, Smoot is a good cover corner... but he whiffed on too many blitzes... and was thrown off by the QB on at least two plays that I remember. Springs cashed in when he had a clear line to the QB. Smoot was a liability.
Rolle is a more rounded player than Smoot, and is more physical despite the similarity in size.

I still say take whoever is cheaper.

exactly....Smoot. to me, is and wont be a number 1 corner in this league. Rolle has proven he is a number corner and him playin as a number 2 is awesome. Sign Him!

With our current inability to get to the QB with just the defensive line, having two CB's who can get there helps even more.
Having Rolle would be nice but the prospect of having Smoot go to Dallas would absolutely SUCK!

Dude I am totally stoked Rolle may come to town. Our defense will durastically improve. I don't care what you say Springs was better than Smoot last year, and overall besides heart, I wasn't totally awed by Smoot last year. He just couldn't make enougyh turnovers for the type of pressure defense we use. I think Rolle will come in and have twice the success. GW knows good, He coached Springs, and went for him, he coached Rolle, now he want's him. Seeing a trend here guys. I see Rolle getting 5 sacks, 7INT's and having a great season.
Not only will he have a great revitalized year, our defense is gonna be nutty. Imagine what our GW can do witha healthy Arrington, one Sean Taylor with a season of understanding under his belt, and Rolle and Springs together, blitzing, picking, etc. I truly think our defense will be one of the best defenses seen in a long time if we pick him up. Now we just have to hope the running game comes along. I think we need to give up with the receiver craze. Let's just make our passing game more consistent for a change. Take the New England approach, a great defense, solid running game, and consistent passing game. We don't need stars to have a consistent pass game just a better scheme which I am confident we'll have. If Coles decides to stay great. If Williams or Edwards drop great. If we trade down, and get Williamson or Clayton great. I am not too worried about whats gonna happen. As long as the team doesn't completely fall apart, we'll be okay and we will play 16 games next season. IMO we will win 10 of them, if we get the running game going.

Doesn't really matter if he goes to Dallas.

Rolle is 6 feet tall, and is 175 pounds.
Smoot is 5'11, and is 174 pounds.
What's the argument about size now?

It's not JUST about who is cheaper. Smoot is also younger, has a great character, doesn't beat his wife/girlfriend, and plays hurt.

Still not a legitimate excuse to pay him $14 Million...

It seems to me that Smoot always struggles against the Cowboys and Eagles.

Rolle Over Smoot-hoven
I'm gonna write a little letter,
gonna mail it to my local Vinn-ay.
He's a rockin' cover coner
I want my defenses to play.
Roll Over Smoot-hoven, I gotta see it again today.
You know, my temperature's risin'
and the checkbook blows a fuse.
My heart's beatin' rhythm
and my soul keeps on singin' the blues.
Roll Over Smoot-hoven and tell Sam-arii the news.
I got the rockin' Cover Corner,
I need a shot of rhythm and blues.
I think I'm rolle'n' Samarii
sittin' down by the FA review.
Roll Over Smoot-hoven rockin' in two by two.
Well, if you feel you like it
go get your lover, then reel and rock it.
Rolle it over and move on up just
a trifle further and reel and rock it,
roll it over,
Roll Over Smoot-hoven rockin' in two by two.
Well, early in the mornin' I'm a-givin' you a warnin'
don't you step on my blue suede shoes.
Hey diddle diddle, I am playin' my fiddle,
ain't got nothin' to lose.
Roll Over Smoot-hoven and tell Sam-arii the news.

This board is insanely fickle.
Let me ask this...is it really necessary to have both corners rampant pass rushers?
C'mon...on a list of things that it's important a CB do...that probably isn't even in the top five...maybe not even top 10 of skills you'd want them to have.
Williams blitzes a lot with the secondary here b/c he has too...b/c we're not better up front yet-but he'll work on that-and this will become even less an issue than the snmall one it is now.
I realize people don't think Smoot is worth14 mil....that's fine.....but the reasoning gets more and more picky for anybody on this team that doesn't resign with us right away.
Look, Rolle is certainely a good corner...and there's a case talent wise he's better than Smoot. But there certainely is a debate there...and you guys are making it sound like it's a slam dunk that Rolle is better in everyway.
Let me pose this question. When Rolle comes flying of the corner for a sack which some of us think is soo vital....what happens if he gets clocked, or lands the wrong way and injuries his knee again?
Smoot is younger, has less injury problems, played the 2nd corner in one of the best defenses in the league...and was working his way into being a team leader before the contract talk.
Consequently Rolle's talent is not the only thing to look at here.
Look truth is neither one of these guys is worth 12-15 mil...if you want to take a stand and not pay a guy because you think it's too much fine...but I don't want to see Rolle here for what Smoot might have settled for...
No more than 10-12 mil....or they can both walk.

Imagine this, Samari Rolle, Shawn Springs, Sean Taylor, and Matt Bowen or Andre Lott..... that is one nice defense backfield

I must say I beleive its harder to be a good corner in the AFC since their is alot of good passing teams. Just look at what happen to Chump Bailey. He got eaten alive. The NFC hid his weaknesses although I remember him getting ran over by Marty Booker who is now in the AFC. So to me ( and I know its a crazy thought ) I beleive Rolle is more proven since he comes from the passing AFC where he has shut up and put up. Smoot has not been anything great in the NFC. I beleive Rolle would thrive and find it easier in the NFC.......just like Shawn Springs has found it easier. Dont forget the seahawks were AFC when he was playin with em.

Good post. Anyways if this guy is supposed to be a sack threat, then I'm sure Freddie can achieve the same with some proper coaching. Rolle is ONE FREAKIN POUND heavier, and one inch taller. Doesn't that make Rolle even lankier than Smoot?
Did everyone forget that Smoot worked hard last offseason to pack some weight?
If we can get either for the same price, or if Smoot is just 1-2 million more expensive, I'd be REALLY sad if we didn't sign Smoot.
You all are getting on Smoot for not agreeing to a lower than market value - as if Rolle only cares about being a Redskin and not one bit about the money.
If Samari Rolle is truly ready to be a TRUE REDSKIN then why isn't he signing for the vet minimum????
