Mock Draft Last updated 2/28/2005

http://warroom.sportingnews.com/nfl/draft/2005/mockdraft/2.html

MOCK DRAFT: ROUND 1

1 (1) 49ers Aaron Rodgers* QB Cal.
The 49ers are desperate to trade down to address their many needs, but no other team wants this pick. Rodgers is a nice prospect but not a no-brainer No. 1 overall pick. He has terrific arm strength and good accuracy, and he would be an instant upgrade over Tim Rattay or Ken Dorsey.
Team needs: QB | DE | WR | RB | NT | OT | S | OLB | CB

2 (2) Dolphins Cedric Benson RB Texas
The Dolphins also could go after a free agent to fill their glaring backfield need and might trade down from this spot. If they stay here, Benson would help them replace Ricky Williams, another former Longhorn, with a powerful and explosive talent.
Team needs: G | RB | DT | QB | S | CB

3 (3) Browns Derrick Johnson OLB Texas
Linebackers were key to the success of Browns coach Romeo Crennel's defense in New England, and Johnson's versatility makes him a solid cornerstone around whom to build. A sideline-to-sideline speedster, Johnson excels as a solid tackler, blitzer and cover man.
Team needs: QB | LB | G | OT | CB | S | DE | P

4 (4) Bears Braylon Edwards WR Michigan
Picks 4-8 are prime trading spots. If they stay here, the Bears would go for the top playmaker. They signed Muhsin Muhammad, but they need another, younger receiver and can land a Wolverine again despite the bust of David Terrell.
Team needs: QB | OT | WR | RB | G | LB | TE | CB | K

5 (5) Buccaneers Carnell Williams RB Auburn
Some prefer Auburn teammate Ronnie Brown, but the Bucs' coaches fell in love with Williams while coaching him at the Senior Bowl. If the Bucs sign a free-agent running back, they would look at a wide receiver or trade down to grab an offensive lineman.
Team needs: RB | TE | WR | K | G | QB | NT

6 (6) Titans Antrel Rolle CB Miami (FL)
Rolle is the right choice for the team's secondary -- to either replace Samari Rolle (no relation) or Andre Dyson. Antrel (6-0, 205) is a big, physical corner with the man-to-man coverage skills to succeed in Jeff Fisher's defense.
Team needs: WR | OT | CB | OLB | ILB | RB | DE

7 (7) Vikings Mike Williams* WR USC
(from Oakland) After acquiring this pick from Oakland in the blockbuster Randy Moss trade, the Vikings can groom his big-play replacement. Despite a year off, Williams remains an explosive and dynamic receiver with elite size, strength, hand-eye coordination and body control.
Team needs: LB | S | DT | G | DE | WR | QB

8 (8) Cardinals Ronnie Brown RB Auburn
The Raiders' trade for Moss helps the Cardinals here, who can land the explosive feature back they desperately need with the retirement of Emmitt Smith and Marcel Shipp coming back from a broken leg. Brown is the complete package.
Team needs: RB | CB | QB | TE | NT | DE | OT | DT

9 (9) Redskins Adam Jones* CB W.Va.
Jones, fast and tough, would further strengthen a terrific Redskins defense, allowing coordinator Gregg Williams to be more creative with his blitz packages. The team also may not be able to retain free agent Fred Smoot.
Team needs: WR | DE | C | G | QB | TE | OT | CB

10 (10) Lions Erasmus James DE Wis.
James is a risk-reward prospect because of his history of injuries, but he's the best pure pass rusher in the draft. Another option might be Virginia tight end Heath Miller, who could free-fall in the first round if Detroit or Minnesota doesn't bite.
Team needs: S | OT | DE | LB | G | TE | WR

11 (11) Cowboys Travis Johnson DT Florida St.
With the Cowboys contemplating a switch to a 3-4 scheme, Johnson would give them greater flexibility. He could play end on first and second down, and move inside on passing situations. Maryland OLB Shawne Merriman is another option.
Team needs: DT | OLB | CB | S | OT | G | WR

12 (12) Chargers Dan Cody DE Oklahoma
(from NY Giants) The Chargers need another productive edge pass rusher for their 3-4 defense. Cody would provide that kind of presence and more. His upfield-charging style fits coordinator Wade Phillips' aggressive scheme, and he can hold up well vs. the run.
Team needs: DE | S | WR | OT | NT

13 (13) Texans David Pollack DE Georgia
Outside linebacker is the Texans' top need, but Pollack (6-2 1/4, 260) is the type of athletic, undersized end they can convert for their version of the 3-4. Although there are concerns about Pollack's speed, he compensates with great instincts and relentlessness.
Team needs: OT | OLB | DT | CB | WR | ILB

14 (14) Panthers Alex Barron T Florida St.
The Panthers need a major upgrade at right tackle and get the pick of the litter. Barron must become more physical, but he has the size, strength and footwork to play on either side. Wide receiver would be another option if the team doesn't re-sign Muhsin Muhammad.
Team needs: OT | RB | DT | WR | C | CB | S

15 (15) Chiefs Brandon Browner* CB Oregon St.
The Chiefs have needs all across their defense but are weakest at cornerback, where there is no reliable option after Eric Warfield. Browner (6-3 3/8, 202), who has 4.44 speed, is the second-best prospect at the position and the team could make him an immediate starter.
Team needs: CB | LB | DE | WR | DT | OT | QB

16 (16) Saints Alex Smith* QB Utah
QB Aaron Brooks has needed a kick in the backside for years, and the selection of Smith would push Brooks to become the elite quarterback he is capable of being -- or accelerate his departure. Smith would be a great value pick here.
Team needs: LB | G | S | CB | RB | OT | C

17 (17) Bengals Thomas Davis* S Georgia
Considering the drop-off at defensive tackle after Johnson and the draft's good middle-round depth at defensive end and wide receiver, this would be a good value pick. Coach Marvin Lewis needs a sound-tackling, hard-hitting strong safety, and Davis excels in run support.
Team needs: DE | DE | TE | S | C | TE | RB

18 (18) Vikings Shawne Merriman* OLB Maryland
With their second first-round pick, Merriman would be a great value for the Vikings here. He could be a drive stopper and add a big-play dimension to their defense.
Team needs: LB | S | DT | G | DE | WR | QB

19 (19) Rams Shaun Cody DE USC
The Rams missed Grant Wistrom last season more than they'd admit. Cody played tackle at USC but projects as an end in the NFL. He could be a nice complement to Leonard Little.
Team needs: OT | LB | S | DE | G | RB | DT | CB

20 (20) Cowboys Carlos Rogers CB Auburn
(from Buffalo) Terence Newman, a first-round pick in '03, is solid on the left side, but there has been a revolving door at right cornerback. Camouflaging problems at cornerback distorted the defense in '04. Rogers is a physical corner with the confidence to play in Dallas' man-to-man scheme.
Team needs: DT | OLB | CB | S | OT | G | WR

21 (21) Jaguars Troy Williamson* WR S. Carolina
The Jaguars have perimeter needs on both lines, but Williamson is the better value to fill another hole. At 6-1 3/8, he isn't as big as Mike Williams, but he is faster (4.41) with more explosive potential as a downfield target for Byron Leftwich.
Team needs: DE | OT | CB | WR | RB | S

22 (22) Ravens Mark Clayton WR Oklahoma
The Ravens are expected to go after a top free-agent receiver, but they also could use a promising youngster to bring along with third-year QB Kyle Boller. Although Clayton (5-10, 185) lacks ideal size, his quickness and intangibles make him a good open-field playmaker.
Team needs: WR | G | OT | CB | DT | ILB | RB

23 (23) Seahawks Matt Roth DE Iowa
Grant Wistrom is recovering from a knee injury and free agent Chike Okeafor probably won't be back. Roth is a nasty, tough, throwback-type player who could spark the entire defense.
Team needs: OLB | DE | CB | WR | RB | C | DT | ILB

24 (24) Packers Channing Crowder* ILB Florida
The Packers hope safety Thomas Davis falls this far, but that's wishful thinking. One thing is certain: The team must upgrade its defense with aggressive and versatile players. Crowder could team with Nick Barnett to give the team two young, fast impact linebackers.
Team needs: S | QB | DE | LB | TE | G | P

25 (25) Broncos Marcus Spears DE LSU
Reggie Hayward is a free agent and Trevor Pryce might be traded, which underscores the Broncos' need for a big-time, pass-rushing end to take pressure off their secondary. Spears lacks big-time speed but uses his size (6-4, 295) and power to burst into the backfield.
Team needs: DE | G | WR | CB | RB | OLB

26 (26) Jets Heath Miller* TE Va.
While Anthony Becht (a free agent) and Chris Baker have done the job as blockers and short-yardage receivers, Miller is a special athlete who can provide a deeper threat down the seams. A cornerback who could fill the team's top need also is a possibility.
Team needs: CB | TE | S | RB | WR | DT | C | K | QB

27 (27) Falcons Brodney Pool* S Oklahoma
The Falcons must upgrade their offensive line, especially at right tackle, but line coach Alex Gibbs prefers to work with low-ego, low-round picks. Pool might be a reach, but the Falcons need a better center fielder than Cory Hall.
Team needs: ILB | S | DT | OT | WR | DE | S

28 (28) Chargers Jammal Brown T Oklahoma
Having filled their defensive end need with Cody, the Chargers address their uncertainty at left tackle behind Roman Oben, 31. Brown is an agile pass protector whose run blocking will improve with experience.
Team needs: DE | S | WR | OT | NT

29 (29) Colts Corey Webster CB LSU
Although a hamstring injury hindered him in his senior season, Webster has the complete package for the position. A strong, tough, instinctive corner, he is a good value pick for the Colts, who need to think defense first in this draft.
Team needs: ILB | DT | DE | RB | CB | S | OLB | OT | FB

30 (30) Steelers Justin Miller* CB Clemson
The Steelers no longer can rely on Willie Williams, Chad Scott and DeShea Townsend, who was shaky in the playoffs. Miller and Ricardo Colclough (second round, 2003) would give them two promising youngsters. And with Colclough and WR Antwaan Randle El set to take on more regular roles, Miller can spark the return game.
Team needs: WR | DE | TE | G | ILB | RB | CB

31 (31) Eagles Roddy White WR UAB
With five Day 1 picks and an extra fifth-rounder, the Eagles might trade up for a shot at USC's Mike Williams or Oklahoma's Mark Clayton. But White would be a good consolation prize. He has the speed and playmaking ability to be an impact downfield receiver. He will be more productive -- and much quieter -- than Freddie Mitchell.
Team needs: WR | DE | DT | RB | TE | QB

32 (32) Patriots Marlin Jackson CB Michigan
Their secondary was depleted by injuries last season, so the Patriots will look to add another versatile defensive back. With his size (6-0 1/4, 200), physical style and experience at safety, Jackson fits the Bill Belichick mold.
Team needs: CB | OT | ILB | OLB | FB | G | QB

MOCK DRAFT: ROUND 2

1 (33) 49ers Ciatrick Fason* RB Florida
The 49ers would be overjoyed if Fason slipped this far. He would start by splitting time with the underachieving Kevan Barlow and eventually become the full-time back.
Team needs: QB | DE | WR | RB | NT | OT | S | OLB | CB

2 (34) Browns Charlie Frye QB Akron
The Browns don't need to look far geographically to find their quarterback of the future. Frye is the next promising MAC prospect at the position.
Team needs: QB | LB | G | OT | CB | S | DE | P

3 (35) Eagles Kevin Burnett OLB Tennessee
(from Miami) The Eagles need to inject youth and talent into their linebackers, and Burnett has shown the aptitude and athleticism to play multiple positions at an elite level.
Team needs: WR | DE | DT | RB | TE | QB

4 (36) Buccaneers Elton Brown G Va.
The Bucs' running game struggled last season because of woeful guard play. Brown is a beast of a run blocker and the No. 1 interior lineman in this draft.
Team needs: RB | TE | WR | K | G | QB | NT

5 (37) Titans Chris Henry* WR W.Va.
Because Derrick Mason was a salary-cap casualty, the Titans need a receiver. Henry, with his size (6-4 3/8, 190) and speed (4.48), can be groomed into a starter.
Team needs: WR | OT | CB | OLB | ILB | RB | DE

6 (38) Raiders Darryl Blackstock* OLB Va.
Whether they play a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense, the Raiders need more playmakers, especially considering their trade of Napoleon Harris to Minnesota. Blackstock has terrific run-stopping and pass-rush skills -- don't be surprised if he goes in the first round.
Team needs: RB | DE | C | S | WR | OLB | ILB

7 (39) Bears Marcus Johnson T Ole Miss
Even if the Bears add a playmaker in the first round, they still need a big man to allow time for those big plays to develop. Johnson is versatile enough to play anywhere on the line.
Team needs: QB | OT | WR | RB | G | LB | TE | CB | K

8 (40) Saints Eric Green CB Va. Tech
(from Washington) The Saints' secondary became average when they traded for Mike McKenzie last season. Green, if he slides this far, could make it elite.
Team needs: LB | G | S | CB | RB | OT | C

9 (41) Lions Ernest Shazor* S Michigan
The Lions are desperate for safety and offensive line help, so don't be surprised if they trade down.
Team needs: S | OT | DE | LB | G | TE | WR

10 (42) Cowboys Demarcus Ware DE Troy State
There are two prototypical 3-4 linebackers in this draft, Shawne Merriman and Ware. If the Cowboys pass on Merriman in the first round, they'll jump on Ware here.
Team needs: DT | OLB | CB | S | OT | G | WR

11 (43) Giants Odell Thurman* ILB Georgia
Because of the Eli Manning and Jason Whittle trades last year, the Giants have one pick in the first two rounds and only four overall. They would rejoice if Thurman, the second-best middle linebacker in the draft, is available to fill their most glaring need.
Team needs: ILB | DT | WR | OT | RB | TE | OLB | QB | K

12 (44) Cardinals Bryant McFadden CB Florida St.
McFadden is a bit of a reach here, but the Cardinals, satisfied with landing Ronnie Brown in Round 1, can use this pick to fill another glaring need with a prospect from a big-time program.
Team needs: RB | CB | QB | TE | NT | DE | OT | DT

13 (45) Panthers David Baas G Michigan
Tutan Reyes was unproductive last season, and Doug Brzezinski is coming off a hip injury. Baas, who can play guard or center, would give the line flexibility.
Team needs: OT | RB | DT | WR | C | CB | S

14 (46) Chiefs Barrett Ruud ILB Nebraska
With Mike Maslowski a question because of a knee injury, Ruud can help the Chiefs' shaky defense with his ability to read, react and make big plays.
Team needs: CB | LB | DE | WR | DT | OT | QB

15 (47) Texans Anttaj Hawthorne DT Wis.
Hawthorne, a quick, disruptive penetrator, can fill the void at nose tackle if Seth Payne departs as a free agent.
Team needs: OT | OLB | DT | CB | WR | ILB

16 (48) Bengals Mike Patterson DT USC
The Bengals would prefer Hawthorne and might trade down for another space eater such as Northwestern's Luis Castillo. They need help inside, and Patterson, although undersized (5-11 1/2, 292), can be special.
Team needs: DE | DE | TE | S | C | TE | RB

17 (49) Vikings Vincent Fuller S Va. Tech
This could be a reach, but the Vikings are desperate for a safety and know Fuller won't be there for them in the third round. The team's best-case scenario is if Shazor slips to them here.
Team needs: LB | S | DT | G | DE | WR | QB

18 (50) Rams Khalif Barnes T Wash.
With Kyle Turley a likely post-June 1 cut, the team must invest in a tackle. Barnes is athletic and the fastest tackle in the class. A linebacker could be another option.
Team needs: OT | LB | S | DE | G | RB | DT | CB

19 (51) Packers Justin Tuck* DE Notre Dame
(from New Orleans) Tuck is coming off a knee injury that forced him to miss the Irish's bowl game, but he won't last this long if he proves to be 100 percent by draft day. If he's not available, the Packers might trade down to add third- and fourth-round picks.
Team needs: S | QB | DE | LB | TE | G | P

20 (52) Jaguars Chris Canty DE Va.
There are concerns about the knee injury that forced Canty to miss most of his senior season. If he comes back strong from rehab, the big (6-7 3/8, 286), powerful end would be a steal here.
Team needs: DE | OT | CB | WR | RB | S

21 (53) Ravens Adam Terry T Syracuse
If Orlando Brown can't recover from offseason knee surgery, the Ravens can plug in the athletic and quick Terry as their starter on the right side.
Team needs: WR | G | OT | CB | DT | ILB | RB

22 (54) Seahawks Domonique Foxworth CB Maryland
Seattle must upgrade its nickel and dime packages and might be in line for a starter if Ken Lucas leaves as a free agent. Foxworth excels in man coverage.
Team needs: OLB | DE | CB | WR | RB | C | DT | ILB

23 (55) Bills Alex Smith TE Stanford
The Bills, who don't have a first-round pick, have tackle needs on both sides of the ball but also desperately need a healthy tight end. Smith can handle the receiving and blocking duties as a starter.
Team needs: OT | DT | TE | G | C | WR | RB | CB

24 (56) Broncos Fred Gibson WR Georgia
Rod Smith is nearing retirement, and neither Ashley Lelie nor Darius Watts can be a true No. 1. Gibson has ideal height (6-4) and downfield skills.
Team needs: DE | G | WR | CB | RB | OLB

25 (57) Jets Vernand Morency* RB Oklahoma St.
This would be a steal. LaMont Jordan is an unrestricted free agent, and Curtis Martin, who will be 32 in May, needs a solid backup to share the load. Morency's age (24) and lack of experience may cause him to slip.
Team needs: CB | TE | S | RB | WR | DT | C | K | QB

26 (58) Packers Andrew Walter QB Arizona St.
With three picks in the first two rounds, the Packers should be able to find Brett Favre's successor. Walter would be a top 15 pick if not for a shoulder injury late last season. If he doesn't prove healthy by the draft, Auburn's Jason Campbell and Purdue's Kyle Orton are other options.
Team needs: S | QB | DE | LB | TE | G | P

27 (59) Falcons Reggie Brown WR Georgia
Brown isn't a physical phenomenon like his Georgia teammate Gibson, but he's more athletic and explosive. Brown moved from a Day 2 pick into the second round after a fantastic week at the Senior Bowl.
Team needs: ILB | S | DT | OT | WR | DE | S

28 (60) Colts Jonathan Babineaux DT Iowa
The Colts have a recent history with Iowa (Dallas Clark, Bob Sanders) and can land another Hawkeye here. Babineaux is a versatile lineman with good inside pass-rush skills.
Team needs: ILB | DT | DE | RB | CB | S | OLB | OT | FB

29 (61) Chargers Craphonso Thorpe WR Florida St.
The Chargers need a big-time deep threat to help stretch the field. Thorpe is at his best running vertical routes.
Team needs: DE | S | WR | OT | NT

30 (62) Steelers Terrence Murphy WR Tex. A&M
Plaxico Burress is a free agent, and though Murphy (6-0 1/4) is more than four inches shorter and better suited as a No. 2, he is explosive after the catch.
Team needs: WR | DE | TE | G | ILB | RB | CB

31 (63) Eagles Eric Shelton* RB Louisville
The Eagles need a big, between-the-tackles back who could provide a change of pace to the shifty, elusive Brian Westbrook.
Team needs: WR | DE | DT | RB | TE | QB

32 (64) Patriots Michael Munoz T Tennessee
The Patriots have an eye on getting a rock-solid right tackle. Munoz's pedigree (father Anthony was a Hall of Fame tackle for the Bengals) makes him the perfect Bill Belichick player.
Team needs: CB | OT | ILB | OLB | FB | G | QB

To bad we can't offer Philly any trade up scenarios.

Given our anemic offense, I would be really disappointed if our 1st round pick went to the defense. I would rather trade down and pick up Troy Williamson or Mark Clayton, instead.

Hasn't williams said that if SMoot walks then Walt Harris is promoted to Smoots spot?

I'm starting to get sold on clayton, someone on this board posted a highlight clip, IMO, this guy may be better, tougher, faster, and more of Gibbs type of player than Williams and Edwards.

Cool, a decent 2 rounder...thanks! Pac Man? I guess depends on the Smoot situation..but of course it would be nice to have Springs,Smoot, and Adams wow
