TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dwight Smith was arrested early Tuesday and charged with a pulling a pellet gun on two fans who approached his car while he waited in line at a McDonald's window.

Smith, a star in the Super Bowl two years ago, was inside his car with a friend at 4 a.m. when a woman in the car ahead of them recognized the player, the Hillsborough County sheriff's office said.

Two men in the car, Trevor Boyce Jr., 19, and Javier Joseph Jr., 22, walked to Smith's car and tried to talk to him, officials added. Smith became annoyed and drew the pellet gun but did not shoot it, officials said. David Roston, Smith's 26-year-old friend, got out of the car and punched Boyce, officials said.

Boyce and Joseph got back in their car and called 911. Deputies arrived and arrested Smith, charging him with aggravated assault with a weapon. Roston was charged with battery. Bail and attorney information was not immediately available.

The Buccaneers and Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not immediately return calls.

Smith pleaded guilty in 2003 to pulling a gun on a motorist. He was fined $225, put on a year's probation, ordered to take anger management classes and complete 25 hours of community service.

Smith returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the Bucs' 2003 Super Bowl win over Oakland. The 26-year-old safety is a four-year veteran who had three interceptions and 83 tackles last season, playing all 16 games.

Why would you approach someone in a fast food line? Is it that serious that they need to run up to this guy's car and meet him? "Wow, we love you!" Please. Those fans deserved a scare and shouldn't have called 911. Especially at 4AM, get your drunk munchies, and move on.

4am at McDonald's. Something tells me these fans weren't simply asking for an autograph.

I read that earlier today, and pulling a pellet gun on someone. I can understand not wanting to be bothered...and you can't just walk up on someone in a drive thru just because they are a "celebrity"

I guess they fear whackjobs..but that was rediculous/uncalled for. A simple I don't want to be bothered right now and lose a fan and keep it moving *lol*

I'm sure they'll say we felt our lives were in danger *lol*

^^ So hopping out of the car and punching someone out is feeling threatened. If you feel threatened stay in your car.

There was no need for the other guy to get out and throw a punch. I guess he feels he is untouchable because he is in an athlete's entourage...

The real question is, what was said by the guys who got out of the car?

Some of you guys are way off-base here.

If it was two kids who had walked up and gotten beaten down would you still be as blase? What about two women? Or elderly people?

What if the two guys had approached him after a game? Or practice?

Despite the time and location of the incident, the fact is two fans got assaulted by a couple of reckless a-holes with pellet guns.

Damn right, I would have called the cops too. Lock 'em up.

What if they were Cowboy fans? How would you feel then?
