Smokin' Al Koken: Redskins HATER??

Anyone else think this guy is hard against the Redskins?!? I mean everyday I listen to SportsTalk980 John Thompson show, he is always bashng the Redskins! And I recall him getting so excited about a couple of signings my the Nationals, but according to him, the Redskins should stop signing people and grow their players... kinda hypocritical... don't ya think?

Both he and that waste of oxygen Steve Czaben are just trying to rustle leaves to get ratings. It's one of the reasons Coach Gibbs no longer does their show and is exclusively on WJFK.

about 4 or 5 years ago Koken took on the role of devil's advocate concerning all the local teams. it is more like an act but it does wear thin. i like Al but i'm so tired of the negativity that i don't listen anymore.

Koken's a stooge who broke onto the DC sports scene doing color commentary with Home Team Sports and the Caps back in the 80's. Moving into radio seems logical considering the guy's head is shaped like Manuel Noriega's, he isn't aesthetically pleasing to even the most compassionate of eyes. I loved it when Craig Laughlin took over the color play-by-play and relegated Koken to rinkside interviews with the players. The cruelest of demotions involve having to watch someone else steal your job while you're left to wallow in the mire. Poor Al. Poor Al's wife, looking at that melon day in and day out.

well, in smokin's defense, craig didnt exactly replace him.

the caps pair of al and mike "frankenstein" fornes were removed by abe pollin and wse in a fit of, of something.

they felt the pair was "too critical" of the caps in their broadcasts.

i wouldnt say that was the case. if the team and players were going well, and did good things, they expounded on them. if a player, or the team, was stinking the joint out, they told you that as well.

it was honest, and fair. it wasnt the sugary "X team/player can do no wrong" that some broadcasters are.

im not sure of the timeline, but i think they were replaced during the same offseason of the infamous "limo incident", which REALLY got under the skin of pollin, and he wanted everybody involved in that gone. it could have been the following offseason though, not sure.

i rarely listen to the JT show beacuse of, well, john thompson. koken and walker are the only reasons to listen. JT can be just unbearable at times. i cant tell if it's an act, or he really is that dumb about all things other than basketball.

The Washington sports teams have been SO successful in the last few years, it's hard to image they would have anything to b*tch about.

I think they are actually excited about the Wizards. They can see the team has turned around and has a great future in front of them.

I'm with them on the Skins. Show me a team that performs well and I'll get over the long streak of mediocrity.

I don't think Smokin Al is a Skins hater, I just think he is the devil's advocate. He can get on my nerves sometimes, but I love that show. Doc going off yesterday was hilarious.

Al Koken isn't that bad. He does play devil's advocate about the Skins but its not personal like it is with Zabe.

And even though he is an older ugly balding gentleman the dude pulls a lot of tail. I have heard the stories of him in downtown DC with some hot blonde or brunette many times

I do find it funny that when Riggo and Doc say pretty much the same thing they attack Riggo :rolleyes:

The local sports people are starting to get negative with the skins because they haven't won, they have been nice for sometime but now how can they be. The skins haven't shown anything different to the fans or the reporters and it seems that last bit of goodwill is starting to be drained, even Doc isn't as gungho as he use to be with all the issues that pop up.

I think Al Koken represents the view point that you build a winner with the draft and cultivating your own players, while using FA as a backup plan to fill much needed gaps, and he doesn't like the fact that the Redskins front office seems to find every solution in free agent spending sprees every season that haven't paid off much.

He could ease up on the skins, though. They are an easy target because of all the money that goes in and out of Redskins park.

Gibbs is off to a great start with what seems to be a smarter offseason plan this year. I hope to see this refreshing shift in attitude continue.

He's always trying to compare our front office with theirs while bashing us. Troy Brown defined sacrifice and team-work and this is how they repay him? Did he ever get a big deal.....

He is going to say with all of the picks they have made the last couple of years gives them the ability to release players since they have depth at each spot, getting rid of Brown and Law are ok with the players they have.

If we get rid of Smoot, Coles, Gardner, we don't have anyone on the team to replace them so we have to hope we pick up some help in FA.

You could compare their FO w/any team in the league....they've won three Super Bowls!!!

They have a great defense, good running back, and a franchise QB......

I guess you could argue that the Cardinals front office is the smartest because they reload in the draft every year....

..and that's the point. The Redskins ARE an easy target. I've been a "Negative Nancy" since the last Cowboys loss, but let's face it. When the team turns it around, there will be no reason to bash them. As it is, they've sucked for 12 years and don't deserve the blind patriotism that many here exhibit. God love those of you who support through ANYTHING, but these are not your family members. They are HIGHLY-paid, LOWLY-performing star atheletes. If Al Koken takes shots at them, he's earned the right. The poor guy sits on the radio with Doc EVERY monday after we lose and must field questions and complaints about a team that overpays and underachieves. He's sick of it and so am I.
