Giants close to landing linebacker Pierce

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/286191p-245054c.html

The Giants spent the first day of free agency courting one of the top linebackers on the market. But he isn't the one they're about to sign.

Despite spending the day with Steelers middle linebacker Kendrell Bell at Giants Stadium, the Giants were on the verge of a deal last night with former Redskins linebacker Antonio Pierce. The two sides were closing in a six-year deal believed to be worth $26 million with a $6.5 million signing bonus and could be signed as early as today.

The Giants are also pursuing Jets right tackle Kareem McKenzie and Steelers receiver Plaxico Burress. McKenzie could be their next free-agent target; with Burress, they're taking a wait-and-see approach until his market is set.

In the meantime, Pierce is expected at Giants Stadium early today, possibly to sign his contract. It's a surprising development considering the amount of time Bell, limited to three games last year because of a hernia, spent at Giants Stadium yesterday. The 26-year-old, who played for Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis in Pittsburgh, arrived early on the first day of free agency and had a physical. Soon word spread around the NFL that the Giants and Bell had come to a deal.

But that deal, which was rumored to include a $13 million signing bonus, turned out to be false alarm. It's not clear why the Giants backed off - whether it was his contract demands or something from his physical. But Bell left Giants Stadium with no contract and headed home.

That opened the door for Pierce, who did not visit the Giants yesterday. He initially appeared to be a fallback option in case their pursuit of Bell failed.

Negotiations apparently picked up with Pierce's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, after Bell left.

The loss of Pierce will be a blow to the Redskins, the team he broke in with in 2001. They considered him a budding star who blossomed when he became the starter at middle linebacker last season after former Giant Mike Barrow got hurt. Pierce responded with 112 tackles, one sack and two interceptions, including one returned for a TD.

He would replace Kevin Lewis as the Giants' starting middle linebacker.

The Giants now will turn their attention to the offensive line. McKenzie's agent, Kevin Poston, spoke with the Giants yesterday. The Giants apparently lost out on left tackle Jonas Jennings to the San Francisco 49ers and guard/tackle Mike Wahle to the Carolina Panthers. They're also interested in former Titans tackle Fred Miller.

NO GREEN: The Giants are not interested in trading for Cleveland RB William Green, according to several team sources. In fact, they're close to re-signing RB Mike Cloud, who could see an increased role as Tiki Barber's backup next season. . . . QB Jay Fiedler is expected to visit this week. . . . The Giants are reportedly interested in DE Jay Williams, who was released last week by the Dolphins.

If we think he is that important, and is a budding star, then we match, or give him a 7 mil bonus. There is no way we offer Bell the kind of money he wants. We have a lot of good young LBs in camp, and I think Marshall could play middle. He seems very smart and physical!

Marshall didn't run the defense on the field. AP isn't just a good player, he's the Defensive Coordinator on the field. The Skins won't be able to find another like him in FA or the draft.

let him go to NY so CP can run circles around him next year. He is all about the $ and not about the tradition of Redskin Football. He wouldn't take less $ to play with a team that has given him the opportunity to shine? Marshall has the ability to do just as well if you ask me!

This one reminds me of <cough! cough!> Jeremiah Trotter leaving the Eagles in 2003 for greener pastures. Look how well that worked out. Pierce will be back sooner or later.

I don't know where you've been for the last 6 years, but there have been plenty of players who joined the Skins because of $$$ and not because they were enamored with the "Redskin Tradition."

I guess that is why CP came here for the tradition!!!! C'mon, $$$ talks.

You can't blame Pierce for going for the big bucks. Most of us
would do the same if given the chance. I'm sure he is thinking
what would be best for him and his family.

I would like to see us match and keep him, but this is the ugly
side of the cap. You grow a guy and then can't afford the keep
them.

If we have to lose him, I just don't want it to be to Dallas. I can
live with him going to Giants.

Reminds me more of Shawn Barber.

Is he still in the league?

j/k. I think we should try to match.

Adios Antonio, we'll see you in NY. You've got to let go of someone in order to fill other positions. Even if Marshall is a notch below, hopefully Arrington's presence will take care of that. Defense isn't a concern with Greg Williams around. If we have to lose something, this isn't a terrible place to lose out. Let's take the money allotted for him and go get something better and fill another hole.

I don't think it's a "cheap" deal, but it seems like a fair one & it's generally in the ballpark of what we offered him.

"Pierce was an undrafted free agent and the idea that he is garbage because he looking to get a fair deal when we threw money away on Barrow and didnt have the foresight during the season to extend him is silly"

^^^ agreed! Teams like the Patriots lock up thier young talent b4 they get huge and demand big pay days and dont overpay.

Well Tom Giants Fan..looks like you guys got yourself a really good MLB in Pierce. Sucks to lose one of your guys to a division rival..at least it wasn't the Cowboys though...man if Smoot goes there im sick. One to Giants, one to Boys...*smh*

I'm not worried about Pierce giving away Gregg Williams secrets to the Giants on defense..anyone can study film...its a matter of when and where something is called and the execution of it...and the way Williams mixes it up they still won't know "when".

Send Barrow back and keep Pierce.

I was also hoping for AP to stay, but as was pointed out earlier, we have a strong group of players at this position and Greg Williams will make the adjustments necesssary to compensate for his loss. I'm more worried about losing Smoot, but that's a whole different thread.
