Fred Smoot will sign with someone for at LEAST this amount in signing bonus.
Also, it's going to be pretty expensive to secure the services of Samari Rolle.

March-3rd-2005, 03:27 PM
Smoot likely just went up to 15 million minimum. Rolle I would guess 16 million. Hmm, wr or cb at #9...........:cue jeopardy theme:
Moss, Patten, Jacobs anyone?? Maybe with the other Rolle or Pac-man at #9.

To me this is expected. Agents know what they are doing and if Smoot is holding firm you know it is because the agent knows what the market will be.

Note that the article doesnt say it was all in a signing bonus. It's probably a 10-12M SB and a roster bonus the following year.
Panthers land Lucas, Wahle
FOXSports.com
Posted: 3 minutes ago
FOXSports.com has learned that minutes after getting lineman Mike Wahle to agree to a major deal, CB Ken Lucas agreed to a massive contract that is believed to average $8 million per year over the first two years. The deal is also believed to have a split bonus and will total $13.5 to $14 million over those two years in bonus money.
Lucas was extremely attractive on the open market because of his size and athleticism. The Seahawks didn't re-sign him because they viewed Bobby Taylor as their No. 1 corner, although others around the league love the potential that Lucas shows.
Lucas has missed just two starts in the last four seasons and in 2004 had his best season by picking off six passes. Lucas will likely team with Chris Gamble as the starting corners for Carolina, although Ricky Manning, Jr. will figure into their plans as well.
As for Wahle, the Panthers are pondering whether to start him at guard or tackle but will likely begin with him at the left guard slot.

If our FO had signed Smoot to 13.5 or 14 million BEFORE the start of FA.
Just like Pierce. We didn't anticipate the prices these guys would command.
Our mistake.

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers have reached agreements in principle with two of the top free agents at their positions -- Packers offensive lineman Mike Wahle and Seahawks cornerback Ken Lucas.
As of Thursday afternoon, the team was working out the final details of the contracts, but they expected to conclude the transactions by the end of the day. Lucas, considered the best free agent cornerback, is expected to get a six-year deal for around $36 million, including a signing bonus of around $13 million. Wahle, a guard who can play tackle, is supposed to get close to $5 million a year on a five-year contract, including a signing bonus of around $10 million.
Lucas had his best season with the Seahawks. He was an alternate to the Pro Bowl and led the team with six interceptions. His specialty is his pass coverage, but he also is willing to come up and make a few hits on the run.
With Wahle, the Panthers acquired versatility. He has been one of the better guards in the NFC, but he has the flexibility to play tackle.

Good god, I thought the corner market was going to go down after the new rules were initiated. Lucas isn't even a premier corner and he's getting paid massively.

Chiefs, I bet. Either way, if that's the type of money that's going to thrown around at these CBs this year, I don't believe his contract demands will come down. If someone's willing to give that much money to Ken Lucas, someone is dumb enough and desperate enough to throw that much money at Smoot. Rolle's the best avaliabe, but last I heard Law was still in a wheelchair because of his foot.

The Lucas deal, and to some degree the Antonio Henry deal with the boys, is exactly what Smoot and his agent were waiting for: the market for CB's during this season's free agency period has been set.

GREAT Carolina. Way to f**k the rest of the league over on this one. I needed a good reason to hate the Panthers and I've found it, I'm afraid. This is crazy. Yea, we should of up our offers before FA, but hindsight is always 20/20. "Smoot, wait right there while I go get my checkbook from the car" *sigh*

Doesn't mean he's signed yet. I'd think San Diego. Pass D was terrible and Marty drafted him. I always thought maybe Denver, but they already have their "shutdown corner". My point though is that it looks like Lucas just set the bar. If we have to give Smoot anything like that, we won't bring him back. I wouldn't want him back.

Wow..even with the emphasis on the rules of the no contact after 5 yards deal corners are still coveted and high priced yikes. I thought it would have drivin the value the other way around.

Hey I gotta novel idea let's stop worrying about CB market and let everyone else got to hell in a handbasket for overspending in a non-cornerback market. We don't need any CBs not even Smoot. Harris, and Springs dominated the third best passing offense in the game last year on our last game. We'll save that cap room and sign a dang receiver...

Our mistake. Or maybe, just maybe, there are teams out there who are overpaying for a position whose value and importance has been reduced due to the illegal contact penalty. I think we ended up getting the better end of the Portis-Bailey deal (a position I did not take a year ago) due solely to the illegal contact rule. The Broncos learned that lesson last year. These teams are going to learn it this year. I'd rather use this money to resign guys like Samuels and pick up role players who contribute than to overpay for guys whose importance is getting diminished by the rules.

I Normally don't jump on folks....but good heavens. Jimoh? That man couldn't cover my dead grandmother. You were kidding about the pro bowl caliber right?
How Jimoh is in the NFL really baffles me. How he's on the Redskins is a true mystery. The only reason I can even fathom is that we need to keep a designated driver on staff to drive Sean Taylor around.

Fine, then someone is going to overpay for Smoot. I guess that's why Minnesota's pass coverage was so excellent, it doesn't matter who you have lining up right?
In any event, Pierce could have been kept had they just done it before FA.
And they may have been able to save 1-2 million(uncertain) by doing Samuels deal before Jones deal was set.

Smoot didn't play the last game of the year against the Vikings.
Springs was playing with a concussion for the parts of the game he could handle. A good part of the game against the Vikings was Harris and Wilds covering Moss and Burleson.

Has it? Even having a shut down corner in 1985 doesn't matter if the REST of your corners stink. I don't think that has changed at all.
You could reasonably argue about the money invested, but we got Springs at 10 million(which was regarded as high, by the way when signed) because of his injury and performance for the last couple years.
