Two good ones were released this season: Tyrone Wheatley and Antowain Smith. One or both might have something left in the tank. If so, they can get first downs and get into the endzone. We could probably pick up one of them cheap. What do you think?

I think we have Betts.

And an improved o-line. Not trying to spite you, Sonny. We're good though.

I don't think either of those backs will be better than what we have in Portis and Betts (not to mention Cartwright either). A free agent rb isn't what we need right now. I agree with Renegade in that our o-line will show a totally different running game this season.

Isn't Davenport from Green Bay available?

I would like to sign Anthony Thomas (A-train) from the Bears. He would be perfect for goal-line plays. He may come cheaps also?

Rock/Betts/Portis seems to be a good 3...

Anyone think Rock will be around next season? He was offered the minimum tender, and I would think someone might be interested.

I'm hoping that Rock 3.0 will do just fine in that job. I don't think he did that bad even with our old OL and SS calling the plays.
Among other things, I'll point out that under SS, he was 5-for-5 on 4th-and-short.
(One of those little things that nags me, is that Steve Spurrier got more use out of Rock than Joe Gibbs did.)
Yes, the minimum tender does make me somewhat nervous, but remember. That tender makes him an RFA, which means if anybody else wants him, then they have to give us a #7 pick (big deal), and we get to match. (And, if we match, then he's ours, and the bidding's closed.)
The only way he leaves is if somebody makes him an offer that we choose not to match. (It could happen: I think he's a better back than, aparantly, the Skins do. But I'm hopefull.)

Wheatly would be ideal in Goal line if he came cheap. I was talking to my buddy about him last week. Rock is a Tweener special team body who is expendable but likeable. Other than keeping him around for Blondie's sake it would make littel difference wether he stays or goes.

I love Rock, but don't fall into all the hype about him round here. No one is interested in Rock but us.

If we get a 2nd rounder for Gardner, then I hope we look at Eric Shelton in the 2nd.

I'm with you. Big heart, little man. He won't even see the field again this year with the exception being ST's.

bulk Rock up again and throw him out on goal line situations. What was he, 240 lbs or something? He could easily be a perfect goal line back in my opinion.

Why is it the answer to all of our problems is on someone elses roster?:rolleyes:
Betts is our short yardage back.

Now, now.
Depending on who you listen to, sometimes, the answer to all our problems is on our bench.

I'm not saying that the answer is always somewhere other than our current roster. I am saying that we did not get the job done on the ground in short yardage and goal line situations last year. Tyrone Wheatley is a proven, outstanding goal line and short yardage back.
Why not replace one third string back with another when you know that you are gaining one of the best short yardage backs in the business to help you win?

The answer to that question is, we were horrible from within the 5 yard line last year! What were you watching?

I don't really mind if we don't add a back, but I would like to see someone bigger than Portis on short yardage situations.
But really, I would just like to see us run behind Jansen as he bulls someone back three yards. Our line needs to improve in these situations.

Now we have to save $'s for draft picks. :doh:

its up to the line to open a hole for a short yardage back. not even the bus could get thorugh the holes our line made last season. Betts can get it done if the opportunity is there.

Problems on short yardage plays in order of importance:
1) Back clock management;
2) Bad penalties;
3) Bad play calling; and
4) Bad oline blocking
Now maybe you could quibble on the order - but these four factors were more significant than who our rb was or wasn't. Given those problems I'm not sure Riggo would have made much of a difference. We have very limited cap space and picks at this point. So I think our priorities should be on using every available penny we have to get Smoot resigned, sign the rest of our fa's, trade Gardner and then get to the draft looking for best available talent at each pick. To save on money - consider trading down the #9. That's it - nothing more.

Is he adding the weight/muscle back this off season?

I think the Rock got bad advice from Byner last offseason if he would have been a little bulkier I think he would have seen the field more. Even a Wheatley or Duckett would command more money than Betts. Why pay for a type of player you already have?

What about Mike Sellers? We just re-signed him and he is listed at 6-3 260.
