I wonder if there may be a sense of urgency to get the Gardner situation resolved, thus clearing up some cap room for a final run at Smoot?

I don't think so. I think the team is standing pat on the offer to Smoot. With two other, better, FA CB that are going to garner bonuses near what Smoot is asking, there's little chance he'll get a better offer from another team.

Nah, Trade Gardner to Trade Gardner..
If all else fails put him on the field next year and only throw him really hard to catch passes...

Gardner does not have anything to do with Smoot.
Neither Coles nor Moss has anything to do with Smoot.
The only thing to do with Smoot is Smoot. They have made him an offer and will not budge. They can afford more, but feel he isn't worth it. The moves that have been made recently have nothing to do with what they can pay him. They won't give him more just to keep him.

whats wrong with going with the ideal of letting our young guns fight it out in training camp. Lets keep some of our money in our pockets this time.

Looks like staying home is Smoot's best option, to me.
He can go to Minnesota, if they come off the purse and pay up, which is unlikely, considering they are in sale, and can't write any checks yet....
Or he can go to KC, who also are having trouble siging people due to their lowball figures
Yes, he can go to either of those places, not get paid, and be a part of one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
Or he could stay home, take his nice handsome offer, (minus any frustration caused the team due to Coles eating up this year's cap figure), be loved by the fans, and be a part of one of the best defenses in the NFL.
Which would you choose?

really..and have to agree with Bang...This D is going somewhere and sending shockwaves..and despite the skins season/record the D was respected...why not stay and be a part of that...instead go to a crappy failing D for similar money or not much more? Come on SmooooooT!

Smoot is gone. Now that Rolle is off the market and his contract is public, the serious bidding for Smoot will begin. Too many takers out there for the Skins to compete. Minny and KC seem to be the main takers and since they have done little free agent buying, their fans will revolt if they don't get someone like Smoot.
Now that rolle is gone the serious bidding begins? What bidding....smoot wants $$$$ in a signing bonus, but the starts are getting 12 millions SB's. Sp of he is gone its because he wont put his pride away and accept 10 million to stay a skin. SO he prob will get 11-12 from KC or Minn and take that instead. If thats what he wants then let him go.

C'mon, Smoot, it's Minnesota. Not only is it always cold, but they got mosquitos up the *ss. And you think people have a hard time understanding your drawl here?

KC or Minny? Why would Smoot want to go to either defense? He'll have to play run support a hell of a lot more then he does here, and that's not his specialty. There are no LBs in either D to stop RBs.

No. We're trading Gardner because he sucks and will save us $2 million dollars. This will give us enough money to re-sign our RFA and our draft picks.

here is an idea, bubmp the trade Gardner for a second or third round pick. Trade Rod and a late round pick to the Vikings for Fred Smoot
Too bad this isn't MAdden 2005 cause I would have done that for sure.
