CHRIS THINKS I'M POM-POMMING FOR PARCELLS. From Chris Hanson of Washington: "Quit cheerleading for Bill Parcells. Remember that the Cowboys are in the same division as Washington (no, I am not a Redskins fan), Philadelphia and the Giants. Name one among those defenses you feel comfortable sending Drew Bledsoe against (with no receivers). The Cowboys have been a personnel mess since Jimmy Johnson left. NO ONE can explain the Bledsoe thing to me. Using the division breakdown again -- where do you rank Bledsoe among Patrick Ramsey, Eli Manning and Donovan McNabb? No higher than third, I bet and I rank him last. Dallas will be 6-10 again and I hope you remember what you wrote. Although among columnists, you do show the ability to admit when you are wrong. But, DREW BLEDSOE?"
So many criticisms. Let me try to answer them all.
1. I wouldn't feel comfortable sending Bledsoe against any of those defenses. But that's not the question. The question is, Who should play quarterback for the Cowboys in 2005, from among the available players? Brad Johnson? Durability questions. Jeff Garcia? Maybe. I still like him. Jay Fielder? Next. Kurt Warner? He'd cost a lot, and I think he's a bigger question mark than Bledsoe. Or Bledsoe, at $5 million for two years? I'd take Bledsoe -- but only if coached by Parcells. The last time Bledsoe played for Parcells, in 1996, he threw for 4,086 yards, 60 percent completions, and had a 27-to-15 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Bledsoe is the gamble I'd have taken.
2. I would rank Bledsoe fourth in the division. I would rank ANY of the new imports fourth in the division.
3. Regarding the 6-10 record ... All opinions count the same in March. You could be right. Right now, I think the Cowboys will finish second in the division.
