View Full Version : Looking More and More Like the 80's

I don't remember exactly who it was (I think it was Charles Mann) but one of the former players made a very interesting statement.

To paraphrase: 'The number of "superstars" on the team may go done, but the overall performance of the team will improve.'

At the time, I was thinking specifically about Arrington and how unfeasible moving him would have been. But now, one year into Gibbs II, the team is starting to resemble that remark.

The teams from the 80's did not have a lot of 'star power'. Maybe that's why only Riggins and Gibbs are in the HOF (thus far). Those teams were hard-working, blue collar type teams that put TEAM ahead of ME.

Granted, there was talent there but there weren't big name players at every position. Our starting LB corps for much of the 80's was Olkewicz, Milot and Kaufmann for crying out loud! Coles didn't buy into the team concept, so despite the massive cap hit, he was let go. Pierce and Smoot wanted to break the salary structure so they too were allowed to leave.

The 'Skins for 2005-06 will be a hard-working, physical team. Hopefully they will be a smarter team this year with fewer penalties. And hopefully, they will be a more successful team.

All the doom and gloom talk around here will cease...

...once Gardner is traded for a 2nd round pick...

...and the Skins then trade down from their #9 spot for a late 1st and late 2nd rounder...

...and the Skins end up drafting a DE, WR/TE, CB and LB in the first three rounds...

:D

This is looking more and more like offseason 2001.

We lost Tre Johnson, Albert Connell, James Thrash, and surprisingly cut Larry Centers

Who was brought in? A rookie WR, an old guard, and Donell freakin Bennet

And that was the best team we have had in the Snyder era

Losing players on D like Smoot and Pierce are positions Williams can just rotate someone into. Think about going into last season when our D-line was supposed to be the biggest question. On top of that all the injuries on the D-line Williams jsut plugged average players in and the line held its own.

On offense our line is stronger with the new center and Jansen back, Moss and Patten will spread the field with speed, and Portis will be able to run the ball much better.

I agree with ya, Cali. It's way too early in the offseason for this kind of panic. Between free agency and the draft, there are still plenty of options for filling some holes on the team.

And I'd give Gibbs and Williams the benefit of the doubt that they can work with the talent level that the team has right now.

Actually, 1999 and the second round of the playoffs was the best Snyder year. Arrington is a team player, a Redskin. He will fit it fine.

If Lemar Marshall can replace Arrington, he certainly can replace Pierce.

That would be absolutely awesome!

I hate losing these players as much as the next guy, but it changes the image of this team. players that come here will come here to play and be compensated for that. Players won't come here to be compensated. We all know the plan is for Williams to take over after Gibbs II is done so the mentality will remain. Snyder is my here of the week for his handling of Coles. I would personally drive snyder around for 1 week because of how he handled that situation. He and Gibbs have full confidence in each other. Snyder gets the picture. Gibbs is starting a job that Willimas will finish when he's gone. I have this feeling that the team is turning into something we haven't seen around here recently. The team will perform. The loss of these players has an unwritten positive. These players have been here through the losing. They take with them the losing mentality. The new players bring a clean slate so they have a bigger glass of the Kool-aid to dip from. when the wins are mounting, all these detractors will be talking about how Gibbs was supposed to get better in his second year and how what he's doing was expected all along. Keep up the good work FO. Pierce was a favorite, but he was more a product of the system than the contract he got from the Giants. Smoot should get his payday. He fell to us in the second round and has been playing for second round money ever since. Let another team overpay him, then we'll get him back in two seasons when they realize he costs to much to keep around. Smoots comments lamented in my mind that he is a Redskin true and true. Also he went out of his way to say Joe did his best to keep him. That's all I can ask for out of the FO. See you in a couple years Smooty. Smoot has J. Trotter type of return written all over him. Especially when he sees us in the playoffs without him.

I agree that we'll be fine. We need to have a team made up of hungry guys that will bust their *****es while they're in the game. On defense, we can have a rotation of CBs and LBs and DLs.

Remember during mini-camps and trainging camp? Seemed like everytime Williams was interviewed or had a press conference he was talking about how he expects ALL of his players to be starters.

Since this doctrine has been hammered into our guys for the past year-and-a-half, we won't be seeing much dropoff with the loss of Pierce and Smoot.

The 80's were good to us.

I agree to a certain level that yes physically we will be ok. But, will whoever takes over for Pierce be able to mentally be as good. It would be nice if Barrow somehow miraculously recovered and was able to start .

Is this a fact: Riggins and Gibbs are the only members in the HOF from the teams in the 80s? If so, Green will be in soon.

If a team can do extremely well in the pre-salary cap era with a bunch of average guys playing their hearts out, then a team should do just as well in the salary cap era with the same cast of players.

I think so. That's why it's such cr*p that Monk can't get in. At least Grimm and Jacoby were on the ballot this year.

Gibby 56

Only Riggins and Gibbs are in the HOF. This team is looking more and more like Gibbs the Gibb's teams from 1981 to 1992.

The one consistant factor of those teams was the Hogs in the Oline. For each Super Bowl, the team had different running backs, QBs, DBs, Dline, LBs, and except for Monk different WRs.

I always thought Clark was better than Monk...so I take Clarks stats don't even get him a sniff.

Gary Clark is an all time favorite on mine. He certainly would be in the All Madden HoF.
