View Full Version : Would Burress be worth it for one year?

He might. But I think the Skins need to guard against making one big FA signing before the draft in response to the Smoot backlash. I think that would defeat the purpose of what they are trying to do this offseason.

Receiver scheduled to meet with Giants

Frustrated by a sluggish courtship, unrestricted free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress might consider signing a one-year contract if he doesn't receive what he considers to be a market-value proposal on a long-term deal, according to his agent.

"It's definitely a possibility," agent Michael Harrison said Tuesday night. "If people are going to lowball him, I could see doing a one-year deal, sending him to a team where 'Plax' would catch a lot of balls and then going back [into free agency] next year. I could insure him [heavily], so that he's taken care of if he is injured, and do a one-year deal."

Under such a scenario, Burress would hope to have a big season in 2005, then go back into the unrestricted market next spring, theoretically as a more attractive target for teams seeking to upgrade their wide receiver situation.

Harrison made the remarks during a stopover while en route to New York, where he and Burress were to meet Wednesday with Giants officials and coaches. Burress had to cancel a meeting set for Monday with the Giants, the only visit he currently has scheduled, when he became ill with the flu.

There have been reports, including one by ESPN.com last Friday, that New York officials have proposed a six-year contract worth $20 million-$21 million, with a signing bonus of about $4 million. Harrison would not comment specifically on those numbers. He said the sides are closer than people suspect, but still not close enough to close a deal.

It is believed that Burress and Harrison are seeking a contract similar to the one former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad signed with the Chicago Bears two weeks ago. In that deal, Muhammad, released by the Panthers for salary cap reasons after a Pro Bowl season in 2004, signed a six-year contract that could be worth $30 million, and which includes $12 million in guarantees.

No matter the numbers, the dearth of interest in Burress, who played the first five years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been one of the most puzzling elements of the opening week of the free agency period. While he experienced some off-field problems in the past, Burress seemed to mature in 2004, when the combination of a run-heavy offense and a rookie starting quarterback limited him to 35 catches, the fewest since his rookie season in 2000.

In a reversal of character, Burress didn't chafe about the offense, made himself a solid down-field blocker, and spoke of team goals above personal performance.

His expectations clearly were that he would be one of the most coveted players in the unrestricted pool, and would strike a quick and lucrative agreement. But Harrison has been forced to initiate contact with most of the teams that have discussed his client as a possibility. While other wide receivers have scored contracts from new clubs, many of them for big money, Burress has generated little buzz. Beyond the Giants, about the only other team to acknowledge interest in the five-year veteran is Minnesota, and the Vikings have said they will only get involved if Burress reduces his contract desires.

The Vikings, of course, traded star wide receiver Randy Moss. Minnesota, however, is also involved in trade negotiations for Washington Redskins starter Rod Gardner.

"We're not going to do something stupid just for the sake of doing it," Harrison said. "We'll come up with something to make it work for 'Plax,' believe me."

Isn't this guy worth a $5m SB? Can't we still outbid the Giants?

I would think a one year wouldn't be too cap friendly for us.

i dont think that hes really all the big of a deal. I mean he might not like the offence were running in washington hand off to portis, dump pass, hand off to betts i mean come on there really isnt alot of downfeild progression in our game. Burress is a downfield threat. not a short slant player. THATS Y COLES HURTS

This is something I was considering. I'd hoped to retain Smoot so we could go receiver in the draft. Without Smoot, I'm hoping for corner in the draft. However, it would be difficult to argue a receiver (or defensive end). So, my hope is we perhaps make an inquiry toward Burress. We have Smoot's budgeted money available. However, that's a long-term deal, not a one-year deal. We don't have enough room to make a viable one-year offer to Burress.

Therefore, I think we would be better served to, perhaps, try to trade for Darren Howard and then just draft the best player at corner or receiver who falls. I'd like ONE more move this offseason to solidify things further in addition to the returning starters we have coming back.

Nobody wants to sign him big, his potential is there but he has not shown much after five seasons.

I would be very wary of Plax. He has shown next to nothing in his years in the league, except of course for something last year, in, surprise, his contract year. We are trying to get rid of Gardner, and I honestly do not see that much of an improvement from Gardner to Plax. He benefitted greatly from playing alongside Hines Ward. Are we certain he is ready to take over the number one receiver slot? Think of Price in Atlanta. Shoot, this of Alvin Harper with us. Doesn't always work out. Be careful...

The only problem with Howard is that he would cost a high draft pick or 2. And I am pretty sure that the Saints would want our #1. Would they settle for a future #1 or a 3 this year and a 2 next? Maybe. What about Derrick Burgess? This player might be had for 70% of the cost and no draft compensation? Or did the Eagles tender him?

I'd like another addition to one of the positions you mentioned (WR, DE, CB) but I think the team has to really guard agains the big splash of giving Ty Law an 8 mill bonus or Burress a double digit bonus just to quell public discontent.

Fascinating, but false.

Burress didn't show anything last year in his contract year with just 35 catches in 11 games. His big years were in his second and third years in the league. He's come back some in his fourth and fifth.

micheal jackson (the ex brown/raven) calls him the poor man's randy moss.

i would take a chance on him, however we have to be more aggressive to take advantage of his skills

Go look at Burress's numbers. They are really no better than Gardner's and, in fact, when you factor in Gardner's better health, he is the better choice. There is a reason the Viks are willing to talk trade with the Skins for Gardner rather than get Burress for nothing off the FA market.

like riggo-toni said, a one year deal probably will hurt us. However, if all he's signing with the Giants is a 4-5 million bonus and 5 year 20 million deal, I would think we could match that easily, that bonus is pretty easy to swallow in 2 seasons if he doesnt pan out. That way we can focus on fixing up our defense in the draft.

Main question is, our cap figure right now is 2 million below I believe (that effin Coles), gonna hurt trying to sign people right now.

I'd be wary of Buress. He was griping about his role on a team that was 15-1 and a serious Super Bowl contender. And he stated, after the season, he wanted to go to a team that passed the ball a lot more than Pittsburg.

Does that sound like someone who would "fit in" here in Washington?

Really, I think Buress is just Rod Gardner, except a couple of inches taller. My inclination is that you will get the same type of effort, which is why Rod is on his way out of town in the first place.

Pass.

I think Burress was hurt last year by Cowher protecting Ben R. When Maddox was the QB, his numbers were mucn better. The Steelers won with defense and the running game. If he joins the Giants who plan to let Eli air it out some, I think he will have much better numbers.

Well, we should find out today if he is going to wear the blue. :fingersx:
