I dont think it will be on TV. Usually never is, unless its a big transaction. But maybe they will introduce Santana Moss as well, so check Comcast Sportsnet.

ESPN News sometimes puts portions of PCs on the air, but I doubt this is a big enough deal to warrant TV coverage.

Do you guys think he'll refute anything that Coles has accused him and the FO?
DUSTINMFOX
March-9th-2005, 10:00 AM
I think there is even more unsaid (that he wants to say) from Coles....
He basically bashed Snyder in direct quotes, but then said they've reconciled?
I wonder how he truely feels about Gibbs. Does anyone get the feeling that he's p*ssyfooting around when criticizing him; knowing no fan would be on his side?

Talking about Walt Harris.
Made the decision that his surgery, last year, was a risky surgery and wondered whether he'd come back. And we knew he might not be able to come back, but we thought it was worth the risk. Thankfully for us, it worked out great.
What you have there is a veteran, proven starter there for us. We have some excellent young football players there too.
Fred Jones
March-9th-2005, 11:20 AM

That is good news to hear. Barrow's big issue was his health. He can lead the D just as well, if not better than, Pierce. He is also bigger and is a proven veteran.

Last year he guaranteed money to Antonio and said they'd give him a chance. We felt as an organization with Antonio that we did what we said we'd do. And we tried to sign him long term and you know what happened there.
I tried to use this -- the fact that we took a chance on him and guaranteed his money -- on him this year. I tried to use the logic of where will you play the longest.
My point of view is it seems like they were really upset with Pierce who they felt owed something to the team.

(paraphrase some best I could, hopefully you can follow it not too may typos)
First of all I want to say it is very important to us, very important to me..
the most important thing we do is pick our players, this is our lives, what we do...very tough decisions to make, we labor over them...(understanding what goes into those decisions-to the fans etc)
We wanted to keep them, very very important, both of those guys(pierce/smoot) played very well for us last year.
We promised to do our absolute best to keep our core group of players together. (commitment/personal challenge)
Promises to do everything they can to keep thier players together.
In this case , we went after these guys hard and early(negotions during the season)
Has to be within the confines of the organization(impacts what you can do with/for your other players(team)
comparison by position and salary structure.
If we go too far on one player it costs us other players.
(Again wishes there wasn't a salary cap.)
14 players they were trying to sign. 8 of those we extended or restructured contracts.
4 unrestricted free agents(went after it hard)
One restricted that was signed (Lemar Marshall)
About there with Ray Brown.
We were successfull 14 times and lost two. One last year, two this year(lost)
We are going after our core group guys, (if you play hard for us we will go after you hard and sign you, if it's within reason)
We don't want our players to leave here! his commitment to the fans.
but the reality is, decisions happen..and hope the player decides to come to us..but there may be a time we lose someone.
(talks about the grading collaborative process for going after/keeping players)
Any criticism should come my way and I understand that, but we do things here together, very well organized, know what we are trying to do.
A very smart group that looks at/addresses our cap issues.
Having said all that, this is the way we're organized/do things.
There are several other teams that are structured in a similar fashion that have success.
Hugely important to our fans, we understand that.
Questions portion:
answers:
We started early with Freddy, during the season, we tried to make a substantial offer that he'd be comfortable with, but in the end Freddy got a better offer and I want to wish Fred the absolute best, and we think alot of him.
I think every football team has dead money issues, we were faced with some tough decisions this year. We did our best to deal with those issues.
*huffed/sighed*
We realize any time we lose a FA, we will make the best logical choice from moving a player to play a position that is already with us, (mike barrow) is ahead of schedule in his rehab, that obviously is very important to us..and obviously we have the draft.
goes into personell decisions, last year it was Walt Harris(Walt had a risky surgery) we looked at it financially is the risk worth it..we felt it was worth the risk..and we made a decision to do that...and thankfully for us it worked out. A veteran proven starting corner for us(Walt)
Confidence in our players, from Garnell Wilds lining up across from Randy Moss for the first time (this past season) Oh my God! *lol*
so these players along with the Draft..we think about all of this well in advance, we have a plan..we dont wait til we lose a player...if we lose a player to address that.
Do we have money there where we could do things? yeah.
Personal feelings?(reitterates doing the absolute best we can do, this is our professional lives, fighting our guts out for our fans, this is what we do)
I don't like these past coupla days..(losing players) this part ive never liked.
Make the best decision for the team(getting away from personal feelings that can hurt the team) it's tough.
Still feel we are keeping the core group(main structure) of the team together. Didn't think they'd lose Smoot and Pierce.
Hopefully next year (zip) no players lost. only lose 3 guys in 3 years. while not happy with losing any would be pretty good.
Coles/Moss deal not done..Coles and his physical, won't address Moss Coles yet until tomorrow..would be premature on his part right now to address that.
Speaks on Offensive struggles again last season..takes the blame for that.
Talked with many players on the phone..players as a team/collective are smart, they know what is going on.(far as negotions etc)
They gauranteed money to Pierce, We will give you every opportunity to play great...showing confidence in him..knowing he never started b4(b4 last season started) got that done..
but the long term deal fell through.
Won't get into individual negotiations(specifics) each one was different. (smoot/pierce)
Felt in both situations we had a good chance to win(negotiations for smoot and pierce) didn't work out.
We pour over every day, players that get released(close eye/ear to the wire)
To get a player, trade for him, draft him etc. do your homework, make a decision. Don't know what will happen day to day, but we keep a close eye and will jump on it, if it someone that can help us.
I have great confidence in our defensive coaches.
Next year(LaVar) He's starting to come on...rapid progress..feel really good about that. But he's getting married this week so he'll be missing a few days.
getting Andre Lott, etc healthy. makes a big difference.
-alot of this stuff is redundant but im typing most of it- cire
See what happens the next few weeks, potential for trade or if someone gets released. Monday we're in Louisville for a workout. Now in preperation for the Draft..we're working hard on that.
Joking, putting out fires is probably what I do. Be more guarded and more carefull..thankfull for today to address issues, appreciates opportunity to speak to the fans.
I know the fans are sitting out there, they want to know, they're questioning. Every opportunity I like to do that and explain our side to it(to the fans) so they know the passion, time and emphasis that goes into the process.
Okay, Thanks guys.

Funny, the Eagles and Pats didn't need a legitimate GM to do a lot of what they did. I wonder how a guy like Andy Reid, with no previous head coaching experience, could possibly have done what he did, or how a guy like Belichick, a career loser, could have done what he did, without a true GM.
It's just a mystery, isn't it?
I mean, we all know Pioli only had a job because he followed Belichick around his whole career, and he's merely a yes-man for what Belichick wants to do. Obviously, it works when you say yes to the right guy -- or, you have a good QB :).

That would be interesting, wouldn't it?
If the Redskins are 10-6 or better and a playoff team, it would be difficult to be concerned over what we've done. And, if the Redskins lose, but the reason we lose has little to do with the moves we made now, but unforseen failures elsewhere -- say Ramsey just blows -- it would not reflect badly.
We'll be a better team next year simply by having a majority of guys having been in the system already. We may not be a more talented team.

You have no idea what Pioli is, or is not. Have you read his resume? Apprently he was nearly unemployable other than where Belichick was. Does he know what type of players his coach wants? Probably. He's been with him longer than Cerrato has been with Gibbs, but, fortunately we keep hearing Gibbs tell us how good Cerrato has been helping him, so we can be encouraged.
The past two years, for Gibbs, Cerrato has helped Gibbs resolve problems at linebacker, defensive line, cornerback, safety, center and running back. Washington, Daniels, Salave'a, Springs, Taylor, Rabach and Portis. Seems he's doing a nice job getting Gibbs players.
And, fortunately, we're also getting good, blue collar type players, like Salave'a, Warner, Harris, Brown and Cooley, with Patten and Rabach adding to that this year. That's fantastic. Aren't you happy he's meeting all your requirements, if only you'd recognize it?

Correct, I called him a yes man.
Probably, if you took a moment, you'd realize I'm taunting all the people who call Cerrato a yes man for only having a job because Snyder likes him, when Pioli appeared to only have a job because Belichick liked him. Kind of an ironic funny, don't you think?
I wouldn't have been upset had we brought Bruce Allen in to do what Gibbs wanted, just as I'm not upset that Gibbs has and seems to appreciate what he has in Cerrato. We don't want anyone OVER Gibbs in authority, just as no one is over the head coach on either Super Bowl team.
We see how well that formula works, so we should try to match it, right?

you think if the Kraft would of let him stick around if they had our record the past few years? I don't.
I think Marty did a lot of things that didn't make sense. Teaching DG to play corner. Bull in the Ring.
But two things he did seemed to be smart.
#1. Dumped Jeff George
#2. Dumped Vinny
Don't you think if Gibbs was open to a GM, it would be a GM he trusts and wants?
I think its less that Gibbs appreciates Cerrato...and most....he doesn't worry about it because he trumps Cerrato and Dan still likes having him around.

The only free agent we wanted back that we lost last year was Bernard Holsey. We traded Johnson. Gibbs isn't counting player losses of the sort we get something in return. Only those we lose and get nothing.

No, I think Kraft would have done what Snyder did and fire the coach and the personnel guy had Brady not been found and Belichick kept losing. What Snyder did was fire the coach and let Gibbs determine the rest.
As for Marty, he didn't dump Jeff George. Or, better, he DID, but ONLY after giving him a huge contract in March then releasing him in September. That is the very definition of foolish. I think if Gibbs wanted to alter how the front office ran, he'd alter it. And the fact that he doesn't speaks positively for how it's working for him.
I think it's amusing you would think Gibbs would keep a guy around he has no respect for. That sounds like Gibbs to you, does it? The Gibbs who respects hard work, honestly and ability, would simply let Cerrato linger? Nonsense, and I bet you know it is.

Well, the love for Vinny on Gibbs' part came from seeing how hard Vinny works and how organized he's been and how well he puts together viable player packages for the team to talk over and assign grades to.
Where the love for Vinny I have came from is a simple recognition that I was clearly wrong initially when I fretted over Vinny returning to the team. I thought he wouldn't be nearly as skilled as he's been filling holes quickly for the systems he's had to adapt to.
And I think that adaptability really shows in how highly Gibbs thinks of him openly nearly every time he speaks. Vinny is doing an incredible amount for the team and Gibbs, and no one appreciates it more, to this point, than Gibbs.
Further evidence of how wrong I was to fret over Cerrato taking a position of power two offseasons ago. Remember, this is now just his third offseason in the position he's in now. He was second fiddle Spurrier's first season to Mendes. His strong work won him the lead job after a year and we had two very strong offseasons. Unfortunately some of the benefit of the offseason of 2003 is lost with the coaching change.
Fortunately the benefits of last offseason are still paying dividends, to the point the team has no area you can point to and say it's a real, major weakness, even after the changes we've made recently.

So what happened? Did everyone get to hear what they wanted to hear?

I can see your point....but he still worries me...and I don't feel he's the right man for this job.
oh well.

Read the thread, or read the summary posted in breaking news. I think what we heard was what happened and the process of thinking that goes into each move and we understand clearly the structure in place, why it's in place, and the goals.
We'll be losing fewer starting players this offseason than the Eagles lost last offseason, so, with hope, that continuity will be of benefit to us.

I've been a little confused on what it is exactly that Vinny does. Is he now head of the scouting department, with a fancy title?

The fact that you don't feel he's the right man for the job is fine, but, it should be tweaked back some, because, the guy who feels he is the right man for the job is Joe Gibbs. Gibbs has to feel comfortable with and trust the guy he works with in this position, and remember, he extended Cerrato's contract, so, evidently he feels good about things.
If Gibbs didn't think Cerrato was properly identifying players to help him, he'd probably know that, and react accordingly. The fact that Gibbs does feel Cerrato is the right man for the job means what you feel should be subjugated to that more meaningful reality.
The fact that our front office gets along and works well together is a benefit to us. Just like how Belichick and Pioli get along as friends, which is why Pioli kept getting brought along wherever Belichick was, it works to our benefit that our owner is friendly with our personnel guy, and our team's decision maker respects him and appreciates his hard work.
So, at some point, this should matter to us as fans. It does to me.

Vinny is, largely, the head of the scouting department, yes. Instead of having a GM who is responsible both for personnel AND the cap, the Skins break the duties up so we have a guy devoted JUST to personnel and another guy devoted just to the cap. This way we're grading players on their ability, rather than on potential cap numbers, and we work within those grades and those numbers to determine who to go after.
Vinny is responsible for compiling all personnel data -- from college to pro free agents -- into meaningful formats and packages based on input from the people under him, and for discussion with the entire staff and personnel group to determine the best fit for any particular need.
Teams that are built like we are from a management standpoint look the same in this regard and, the model we're seeking is the model we had when we were winning games with JKC and the model the Pats and Eagles have now. We should be thrilled we're emulating those teams in this regard.
