View Full Version : What's Your Favorite Mixed Drink?
China
March-23rd-2005, 03:34 PM
It's the offseason, and I know in the last year we've had multiple what's your favorite beer threads; so what is your favorite mixed drink? Feel free to post recipes. FYI, this is what got me thinking on this subject:
A sting in the tale: drinking Snake Wine (http://www.pilotguides.com/destination_guide/asia/vietnam/snake_wine.php)
If you’re looking for authentic Vietnamese snake wine there is no more obvious and better place to find it than Snake Village in Hanoi. Watching the drink being made is not for the faint hearted but if you’ve got as far as here then your curiosity will see you through.
In the restaurants and bars of Snake Village various lethal snakes are kept on show in cages for the customers to choose from. Once picked it usually takes two men to kill the angry reptile, one to hold it upright and the other to slice it open from head to tail. The blood is then poured into a vat to be mixed with rice wine. Not much goes to waste as the heart is cut out and the gall bladder is emptied and mixed with wine in shot glasses. After the drinking is done the snake is fried and served up over several hours.
If you don’t want to see all of this there is the option of a “here’s one I made earlier” drink. Other forms of the wine are left to ferment in vats for a few weeks after it’s been poured over the body of a dead snake. You can see these vats in some of the bars; big glass jars, some containing up to ten snakes coiled around in the bottom.
Problems have arisen due to the popularity of the drink with the Vietnamese. As the main culler of rats, snakes are now highly regarded. Hanoi has seen an endemic rise in the number of rats roaming the streets without their main predator there to bother them. As a result the government stopped the sale of snakes and cats to China and put a trade ban on many restaurants that serve the wine.

And for the record, I prefer Gin mixed with Gin, with a dash of Gin and a little Gin on the side.

My favorite mixed drinks would be anything that can give me a great buzz! But if I had to choose it would be Sex-on-the-Beach followed closely by the Long Island Iced Tea.

A shamrock is damn good, Bacardi Limon, Red Bull and a splash of Blue Curaco. Cap Coke is bad stuff, my worst hang over ever. Malibu Bay Brezzes are really good, but they look so sissy-ish. Capn and Ginger is good too.

I rarely drink, but if I do, I drink Sex on the Beach or a Margarita on the Rocks.
None of that frozen stuff for me.
Sex on the Beach is what I would consider a chick drink.

Glad to hear it. :)
It carries a certain stigma here in Australia. Plus they do this disgusting thing where they sell premixed cans of Jack and cola, which are NOT the real thing at all.

Don't drink anymore, but back in the day, the main drink of choice was Jack Daniels and Sun Drop

You too, eh? :)
In college when I first started drinking Gin we used to drink the Seagrams which is decent.
But right about the time I got married my dad bought me a bottle of Bombay Sapphire.
Damn... now there is no going back to the cheap stuff :(
My habit quadrupled in price :)

a shot (or 2) of Scotch and a splash of Drambuie. Its hard to find a bartender who doesn't put too much Drambuie in, though. I also enjoy Scotch and Bailey's (a Shillelagh), and the occaisonal Black Russian.

In my drinking days, it was:
1) Alabama Slammer
2) 7up/Hawaiian Punch/Stoli
3) Madras
These days, I don't drink (except for occasional glasses of wine), so Crystal light is pretty much how far I go for mixes ;)

Oh I've not only seen them here, I've tried them. ABC store's are closed on Sunday. ;)
They're weakly mixed & use a generic cola. The Jim Bean ones suck just as bad.

They have them in the States? How crushing! I thought the US was far too proud and dignified for such a thing.

Its pretty rare that I'll drink something besides beer, but I love a good gin and tonic. My mom used to make the best Bloody Mary's known to man. I'll even throw a recipe at you:
jigger of good vodka
dash of worcestershire sauce
1/4 inch of lemon juice
3 shakes of 'bitters'
3 shakes of Texas Pete or hot sauce of choice
generous sprinkling of Lawry's seasoned pepper
dash of celery salt
Top it off with Clamato Juice.
Awesome.
I'm also fond of Kahlua (with anything) - but I think I could get addicted so I don't drink it often.
When I was in the Marine Corps, we'd head out of Camp Lejeune in NC to Emerald Island. We'd mix Stoly, and frozen pineapple juice in jugs. We christened it a 'Jacuzzi bamboozi'. Can't beat it on a really hot day. Although I'll confess...waking up with a ferocious hangover with the tide washing over you and sand in your crack - its not pretty :)

Nah I usually drink gin and juice, as cliche'd as it is. The bartenders are all like "OK Snoop" even though I started drinkin the stuff even before Snoop's song. Ah well...

Then by kickoff, I was this guy....:dunce:

Have to go with a margarita, and a good ol' fashioned traditional one. None of this froo-froo-she-she peach-mango-raspberry-schnozberry crap crap crap.
Hurricanes are a verrrry close second, though.
