Surtain would top our deffense off. He seems to be able to be traded for a reasonable offer. Why dont we persue this?

Because Surtain is looking for a payday. That's not our philosophy anymore. Thanks Joe Gibbs!

how much is remaining on his contract? Miami is willing to give him up for a 2nd. I think KC is offering a 4th.

12 lbs lighter than springs, but 20 heavier than smoot. Im sure our staff is weighing options, or maybe they want to wait after the draft to sign a position of need.

Why should we look at surtain rather than like Dyson. First of all we wouldn't have to give up a draft pick to get him. Second he would come much less. Thirdly, i know dyson is younger but isn't surtain getting up there in age? like 29-30 somewhere in that range. I know surtain would totally lock up our defense but we can't mortgage our future to get him.

I would give Miami a third for him, but it all depends on how big a signing bonus he wants. If he would take what we offered Smoot, I would do it in a heartbeat.

how do we know he is lookin for payday? He is only 27 isnt he?

He's 28, and turning 29 in June. He is looking for an $8M signing bonus.
The Dolphins need a WR and a QB, and Rod Gardner and Tim Hasselbeck are both looking for a trade. :D

If our defense improved after we lost Champ Bailey. Why cant we improve after losing Smoot & Pierce? I think we our trying too hard to replace players we lose with a veteran from other teams. We need to wait until the draft see how our defense looks & fill any holes if we have any. Pierce came out of no where whose to say our next DB or MLB isn't already on our roster??

"Surtain is entering the final year of a contract that pays him $6.15 million in 2005 and has a cap number of $8.383 million. Because the Dolphins are more than $16 million over the projected $85.5 million cap, they are looking to either restructure contracts or release players". As per ESPN.
So if we picked him up for a 3rd he'd basically get 6.15 mil right, if we don't restructure his contract? Oh and he's only 28.

For all we know, his agent could have sent out preliminary contract parameters to teams and the Skins deemed them too high. Since he's still under contract, nobody can really talk about him so perhaps Miami is just waiting around for the highest pick they can get for him. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't traded until AFTER the draft. Teams might be a little more willing to give a higher pick next year than this year.

Well, we first have to find suitable replacement's. We found Springs, and for a bargain. If we could fill our need at CB with a top DB, I'm all for it. How can you disagree with giving a third rd pick for top 5 CB? Especially, if he will take a 8 million dollar bonus.

There will be more veterans available after June 1st. Our team is changing were not going after every big name. If we were really in trouble at DB & linebacker we would have kept Smoot & Pierce. Were fans but our coaching staff is not stupid. They wouldn't have let them guys go if they thought we couldn't replace them. We have a good system on defense we were #3 without our best defensive player. Were going to be much better then last year & we wont give away money like in previous years.

it's a nice thought going after Suratin and pay him a little less than we offered Smoot. - We could then have some real nice flexability in the draft.

Too much money pass, besides if we don't trade down in draft we are probably going to take rolle with the #9 so no need for him... Another thing why is everyone so fancied with pac-man he will not be near the player rolle will...

I'm not for going out and getting every big name. I'm talking about getting a bargain for a good player that fills a need. Smoot and Pierce would have been kept at an acceptable price, We're not in deep trouble. But we have a hole to fill at CB and MLB, I think between Marshall and Barrow, they will get the job done. Now, at CB I think if we can get a good player at a good price we should pursue that. I would like to fill all our needs before the draft, If we can get a good corner for a good price before the draft I'm all for it. I don't care what his name is.

We'd have real nice flexibility but only one first day pick.

But we wouldn't be strapped to filling a need, which is what Joe Gibbs had said is what he wants to do.
Plus, if we end up getting a pick for Gardner...

Surtain would cost way too much for us, and we really don't need him. We have other needs to fill.

So he would be a lot cheaper than keeping Smoot and he is Surtainly better as well.

surtain would not complete, or lock up our defence. We need a good CB, and DE to complete this defence. Even thats questionable many think we could use a better LB now that pierce is gone.
However if the cap permits. It would be awesome to get surtain, then draft merriman. Our defence would rock (better then last year I think). Then get the best wr in the 3rd. I know this wont happen but if it did, man it would be hard for people pick against us.

Go after Dyson and keep your 2 3rd Rounders (After Gardner trade) and draft to fill your needs and depth.

And that other need would be? Corner seems like a pretty big hole to fill to me.

Yeah, I mean he plays for West Virginia. Can't possibly be as good as one of those 'Canes. Dude this comment is a baseless, shot in the dark. Jones has clearly demonstrated he is a big time corner.
