Pro Bowler James Show Interest In Bears

The agent for Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James on Friday mentioned the Bears among seven teams that the Pro Bowler might be interested in playing for. The Colts are believed to be asking for a second-round pick in return for James, whom they have tagged as their franchise player but are shopping.

"We are interested in Edgerrin playing for the Dolphins, the Bucs, the Cardinals, the 49ers and potentially for the Chicago Bears, Houston and Cleveland," James' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said on ESPN Radio. "Those are the teams we think are interested in having Edgerrin James on their roster."

As the Colts' franchise player, James is guaranteed an $8.1 million contract this season, but he has repeatedly said he wants a long-term deal. The Immokalee, Fla., native is thought to be leaning heavily toward a warm-weather team.

The Bears would have to cut several players currently under contract to squeeze James under their already snug salary cap. He wants a contract similar to the $50 million deal that Rosenhaus got for Clinton Portis with the Washington Redskins and is expected to be seeking a signing bonus of at least $12 million.

But, with highly regarded running backs Cedric Benson, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams all expected to be top-10 picks in next month's draft, James' value could be diminished, especially for the Bears, who hold the No. 4 pick.

James has taken a pounding in six years in the NFL, carrying the ball 1,828 times for 7,720 yards and catching 312 passes for 2,502 yards. He also had reconstructive surgery on his left knee in 2001, when he missed 10 games.

He's on crack if he thinks he can get Portis money, especially this year with so many good rbs in the draft.

He didn't exactly perform in the playoff game against the Pats either. He must have lost something with that injury and he has 6 years in the league.

james is still a big time player. i don't think he salary demands are out of the question. i wonder who indy is going to turn to run the ball.

he deserves money, he is a good back, I believe he's had more than 1000 yards each season (save for the injured one). He's probably going to get money from Miami though. I think its pretty obvious how the Colts ground game helped contribute to their high flying game.

Dominic Rhodes. He served as a great backup to James when he was injured. Rhodes was undrafted coming out of college too. Just another example of how all the "projected best players" in the draft dont mean crap.

The reason he did not perform agains the pats is because once again the colts abandoned their game plan and had Manning gun the ball over 50 times. How were you not convinced that he is a premeir back last year? The guy ran for almost 1600 yards and 9 scores. That is top 5 in the league IMO. He also carried the ball 334 times. That is durability. He is getting up in age but the guy warrants some respect considering he has almost 8,000 career rushing yards. That is obviously not including all of the receiving yards he has coming out of the backfield (where he is one of the best in the league).
