By MARK LONG
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Marcus Stroud signed a 5-year, $31.5 million contract extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, becoming one of the highest paid defensive tackles in the NFL.

Stroud and the team began negotiations last August, with the 6-foot-6, 312-pound lineman wanting to become the highest-paid defensive tackle.

Detroit's Shaun Rogers signed a 6-year, $46 million contract in January.

Stroud's contract includes $12.5 million in bonuses - most of which will be paid in three installments. He gets $6.5 million now, $3.2 million in five days and $2.5 million after the season. Stroud also has $300,000 in workout bonuses.

"I'm excited and thrilled to have this process behind me so I can concentrate on football and get ready for this new season," Stroud said in a statement. "This is a great organization, and I'm glad I'm going to be a part of it for many years to come."

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said the contract is guaranteed for 2 years, with Stroud's base salary set at $540,000 in 2005 and $545,000 in 2006. His salary jumps to $1.415 million in 2007, $5 million in 2008, $5.5 million in 2009 and $6 million in 2010.

"He wanted to stay in Jacksonville, and this will keep him there," Rosenhaus said.

The 13th overall pick in the 2001 draft, Stroud has started 48 consecutive games and become the anchor of Jacksonville's stout defense.

He ranked seventh on the team with 80 tackles and had 4½ sacks last season despite playing through a knee injury. He also started his second straight Pro Bowl.

Stroud and John Henderson give the Jags one of the best tackle tandems in the league. They should be even better this season after the Jaguars added two starting defensive ends (Reggie Hayward and Marcellus Wiley) and two backup tackles (Martin Chase and Tony Williams) via free agency.

Worth every penny. Good deal for the Jags.

Too bad they run the "Black Jack offense" (hold on 16) or else they'd be a playoff team.

Hmmmm, sound familiar?

if they had the cap space, thats well signed, no real signing bonus it seems, they can release him at will after 2 seasons.

These contracts are stupid. They are so back loaded. Why don't players wise up. They could take much smaller overall contracts, average more per year played and stay with the same team for most, if not all, of their career. It would be a win-win. But instead, their too concerned with how their paper value stacks up against their peers.

Stroud is a very good DT and deserved a big pay day. From the few games that I caught last year I thought John Henderson was played better. Anyways, it probably wont be long till Henderson switches to Rosenhaus and wanting the same contract.
