View Full Version : From GBN - Skins could pass on Rolle?

Would not surprise me if it were true:

’Cane mutiny’ may impact CB draft… With a number of former Miami Hurricanes including Giants’ TE Jeremy Shockey and WR Santana Moss and DB Sean Taylor, both of the Redskins, opting to workout in South Florida this spring rather than attend their respective teams voluntary off-season workouts, there has been some idle speculation about that some teams around the league may factor that possibility into their final grade on current Hurricane prospects like CB Antrel Rolle. Washington, for example, has a major need at CB after trading away Champ Bailey last year and losing Fred Smoot to free agent this past winter and has reportedly been looking hard at Rolle, along with Pacman Jones of West Virginia and Carlos Rogers of Auburn, as potential prospects for the 9th pick overall. While it may not affect their final decision, it apparently hasn’t escaped the notice of the Redskins’ brass that Moss and Taylor are not working out with their teammates in Washington; while there are no appreciable character issues with Rolle, the Redskins would hate to see another key player wintering in Miami. In fact, there is some speculation that the Redskins may actually be leaning toward selecting Rogers. If, indeed, Rogers is their man, the Redskins could also then think seriously about dropping down several spots in the draft if the right deal came along. And while the Redskins have made little effort to hide the fact that they are seriously considering taking one of the top three CBs with their 1st round pick, they are also looking at WRs and have had most of the top prospects at the position in for visits recently. As well, the Redskins also had Maryland DE Shawne Merriman, arguably the top-rated defensive prospect in this year’s draft field, in for a visit.

Hell, maybe we pick Merriman just because when its time for him to go home, at least theres a damn good chance he won't be far away.

Overall, I am not putting much into this stuff with Moss and Taylor. I think mainly, since they are voluntary workouts, this is the coaching staffs way of yelling at those guys for not being here, but they really can't do anything other than threaten.

Now, for Taylor not returning phonecalls or answering his phone when the Coach calls. That I think is simple immaturity and a problem that Rosenhaus has to deal with. Clearly Taylor wants his contract redone, but I think he has little clue on how to handle this properly and pretty much got some bad info from someone other than DR.

The key, is if he shows up to mini-camp when they all have to be here. That changes everything when it comes down to it. Then he is playing serious and we have a major issue to deal with, but until then..........let it slide for right now.

I'm on the trade down & Rogers bandwagon. Just say no to more players from the U.

To me, it seems to be more of a Drew Rosenhaus issue. I think he represents all three of those players (Shockey, Moss, Taylor). We know that Moss and Taylor are looking for new contracts.

Arrington, Moss, and Taylor can kiss my pork. We can't trade Arrington because of the cap hit, taylor because of his talent. But why not trade Moss for a 1st rounder?

I think that you are right. I think that I may try and take Rosenhaus job. Heck, I may even take less of a percentage than he does.

Frankly I think Rogers will end up as first on our board. Many reports say that Rolle may project ultimately more as a safety. Pacman is short (which teams don't like) and a great return man - we don't really need with Brown, Moss, and Morton. Pacman is the weakest tackler of the three and weakest in run support. I think Rogers is more the type of player GW will want anyway. The U stuff just makes it easier for us to pass on Rolle.

I agree, this is the best option. Better player with more picks.

I say pick Merriman in the 1st round, then pick up a quality CB in the 2nd (if we can get a pick) or third...
It can be done.

This makes no sense to downgrade Rolle because you are worried he will miss voluntary workouts. Good grief, if you feel he is a playmaker take him. It's not like these guys are sitting on their a** down in Miami, they are professionals crafting their game they have rep to live up to. Yeah Miami guys are cocky but that's a part of the reason they are good. He probably has the least amount to learn out of anybody on D. Know the blitz calls and stick the guy in front of you.

Here we go again. These guys are in Miami crafting their bodies, not their game. They CAN'T be crafting their games unless they are working with their respective teams' coaches and teammates.

There's a hellava lot more to the professional football game than knowing "the blitz calls and sticking the guy in front of you."

I just don't see us taking Merriman with the number 9 pick.. For some reason I see him going with pick 15-25.

No one will trade Moss for a first round pick.. The league knows he's not that good and everyone knows we got the crap end of the stick on the Moss/Coles trade.. Even if Moss was any good teams would be leary of trading a pick to a guy on the last year of his contract wanting big money.

yes, i agree....seems like the safest & smartest move.

Im not sold on Pacman or Rolle....Pacman got more attention because of his nickname and his return skills than his DB ability. Rolle seems like a a solid player but Rogers is the more polished of them all.

 so a player can only improve in a full team setting. You have a lot to learn about what a pro athlete actually does to get better.

I guess I shouldn't even bother to your address your second comment but I can't help it. Just because I say a corner has "least" to learn doesn't mean it's nothing. That's least in comparison to a lineman, linebacker, free/strong safety. Got it.

That's the problem, this isn't about improving the PLAYER, this is about improving the TEAM.

So improving individually doesn't improve the team? Again, these are voluntary workouts.

We don't need another top 10 safety (Rolle) pick.

It doesn't improve the team as much as it would had they been working together. Believe it or not, ST can learn more from his coaches & teamates then Ed Reed and Jeremy Shockey.

Yes, yes, I know they're voluntary... means nothing to the discussion as to whether he SHOULD be there.

Just take Merriman.

we need a CB more than a DE...although either one would benefit us. i really like pacman, but i think were def. better suited with rolle or rogers. i mean look who we'll have to face in our division: owens, burress, and others:moss, muhammed. we need a CB with size that can match up with these guys..unless Pac is gonna be the next D Green...and i just dont see that happenein.

If we don't trade down, I would love to see us get 2 WV players. No, I am not a WVU fan, but I live out here due to employment. Was born and raised in Fairfax, VA. The two would be Jones and Henry. The most 2 talented players WVU has. Jones is the best CB in the draft and Henry has as much talent as any WR in the draft, but yes is a headcase. Henry would be worth the risk as a 3rd round pick and IF our coaching staff can keep his head screwed on straight would be the steal of the entire draft.

I wouldn't pick Rolle at #9 not because he went to the U, but because I don't think he's worth picking up at that point. I'm just not very impressed by him.
