View Full Version : Who Is This Year's Cooley?

I know less about the NFL draft.....than anyone on the planet. But I was impressed when I read last year's thread talking about Cooley visiting the Redskins before the draft...and realizing how many on this site saw a great player in Cooley, something I only saw in him after he played a season for the Skins.
So I'm wanting to know...who would/could be this years "Chris Cooley" for the Redskins, that 3rd or 4th round pick that ends up contributing far more than expected...I wanna keep an eye out and look up whoever's listed, and of course revisit this thread after the season starts lol. Even if some of the names listed end up drafted by other teams, I wanna see how the extremeskins experts do (ok, just a bunch of guys/gals goofing off at work, but still)...
(ps: I know I could do a search and find about 47 different threads and compile my list of mid-round diamond in the roughs...but I'm lazy.)

I wouldn't say Cooley contributed more than Expected. He was brought in to be our H-back (We don't have any other good ones on the roster). We gave up a second and used a third pick to get him. And he lead all college TE's in receiving yards the year he was drafted. Our coaches knew he could play.
As far as who could make an impact in the third round? Depends on which way we go honestly. If its a Dlinemen I could see that happening. If its a WR it may take 2 or 3 years for them to see the field much. If its a guard it depends on injuries.

I guess I said "more than expected" because there was a significant chorus last summer who thought giving up the next year's 2nd round pick in order to move up to get Cooley was a mistake...as well as the posts I read on the old Cooley thread in which more than a few thought he was a "project" at best. I just thought he performed beautifully all season, and like I said I know next to nothing about the draft and college players...lol ;)

By the way, any names to go with that possible 3rd round Dlineman??...

Vincent Jackson could be a nice player, but it's doubtful if he falls to us in the third. The only problem with him is that he might have to switch to TE in the NFL. H emight be more of a project then Cooley was, but with his athletic ability, he could develop into a good pass-catching TE.

C.J. Mosley -Big run stuffing DT (we could use some youth there)
George Gause- Nice pass rushing DE prospect.
Chris Canty*my choice*- (DE) Would be a steal here, but he should be there when we pick. Absolute beast of a DE, He'd be a first rounder if he didn't have a knee injury his SR year.
And as I said. C's and G's get drafted mostly in round 2 and 3 as well so some top prospects will be there. Ours is a high 3rd rounder so we may even get the pick of the litter.

Dan Buenning (G) from Wisconsin is expected to fall to the third round, but is very talented. I can see Gibbs snatching him up, especially if we wheel & deal for another 3rd round pick (Gardner?).

UNLV S Jammal Brimmer, TSN has the skins taking him in the 4th I think, if this were to happen, Brimmer would be the starting SS by mid season.

What about a corner? If we take any position other than CB in the 1st, I think we should be able to pick a more than solid CB prospect in the 3rd. I think there are several guys who could give us some great nickel play right away who would still be there.

i think jerome mathis showed he has amazing talent. Speed, agility, and other intangibles against good opponents in the senior bowl. he might be the next dante hall only with better hands. Rediculous speed. hes definitely a sleeper in the later rounds.
