This is very disappointing. Is this just a media move to save face? There was a chance he was going to be cut. Is anyone familiar with the injury?

pulled or torn groin... really does seem like a media move because it was looking like he was going to be cut

I don't give a damn about the Worlds anymore. I just hope that Gil is healthy for training camp in October and the regular season in November! Doh!

This explains why his minutes were reduced. Why would he be cut? Please, he's so much better than that stiff Hinrich.

Arenas strains groin in practice, out of worlds
Updated: Aug. 14, 2006, 12:55 PM ET
Gilbert Arenas suffered a groin strain during Team USA's practice on Monday and will not play in the FIBA World Championships, USA Basketball announced.
Arenas, of the Washington Wizards, strained his groin Monday morning during a practice outside of Seoul.
"We know Gilbert is really disappointed, he's done a great job. It's an unfortunate situation but he is not going to be able to continue on," managing director Jerry Colangelo said. "We're concerned because he has had a history regarding groin pulls. This is a precautionary move but it is important that he return home and get treatment."
Arenas' departure leaves 13 players competing for 12 spots on the roster for the World Championships, which start Aug. 19 in Sapporo, Japan. His absence will likely ease the competition at point guard and could open the door for a player who might have been in danger of being cut for the tournament.
The 13 remaining finalists contending for the roster include: Carmelo Anthony, Shane Battier Chris Bosh, Bruce Bowen, Elton Brand, Kirk Hinrich, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Antawn Jamison, Joe Johnson, Brad Miller, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade.
Arenas played in all four of the team's pre-tournament tune-up games. He started once, averaging 3.8 ppg., 2.3 rpg. and 11.0 minutes per game.

He injured it today which leaves no explanation for why his minutes were reduced.

I'm gonna guess that because of all that work he put in on defense this has happened to him, for those that don't play basketball, the position you sit in on defense really puts pressure on the groin area, he has been working real hard on improving his defense and I think that he may have pushed himself to far by doing to many slide drills.
Hopefully he will be ready for the season, I can't see the Wiz doing anything without him, who's the backup point guard?

Uh yeah, that's why Gil has sucked donkey sack in the exhibition games.
Face facts, Hinrich and Paul far, FAR exceeded Gil's level of play and Hinrich's basketball IQ is clearly superior and he was the one on the floor locking down guys like Arroyo and playing D and making key shots at the end of that Brazil game.
This isn't the NBA and each guy has a role to play. Gil's shot has been off.
And hinrich is one of the only guys who can put some heat on Dwyane Wade, I'm not sure where you get this stupid idea that he's a "Stiff."
That stiff just beat out your boy for the USA WC team.
Maybe in 2008, Gil will get it together.

Whatever. I love how all the haters come out because their boy didn't make teh squad.
Meanwhile a Wizard is still ON THE TEAM and you'd rather just pretend the team doesn't exist. Pathetic.

OK, we're cool then.
Gil may not be THAT hurt. Remember that Marion had an "injury" as did Amare. Now Amare really did need time off but it might just be a face-saving measure based on an injury that wasn't too bad.
I'm sure Gil will be ready for the season.

He'll be fine for the season. But I really wanted to see him run with USA at the Worlds and then in Beijing in 08.

Gil gettin some props on Yahoo Sports. The headline is "With Arenas Out, Team USA Has A Long-Range Issue". They refer to him as the teams main 3-pt shooter.

It's not that Arenas was the best player on the team, but his ability to knock down outside shots is a skill that the Americans desperately need.
That Arenas averaged 3.8 points and made only two of nine three-pointers in four exhibition games and is still considered so valuable is a testament to the team's dire need for outside shooting.

Woah. Slow down. He can still make the 2008 Beijing Olympic Team. This is what other players like Kobe are going to do.

I really think Gil was on the verge of being cut by coach K, along w/ Bruce Bowen....6 minutes in back to back games just wasn't gonna cut it...not to mention that Hinrich has stepped his game up, and also the fact that coach K loves Chris Paul, I truly believe that Gil was on the outside looking in....Maybe this injury was a blessing in disguise, because who knows how he would have handled being cut from a team that he so desprately wanted to play for....I do hope he is in the mix for playing in the 08 Beijing olympics....even w/ scoring 29ppg ,and being a rising star in the NBA, there is no gurantee he will be on this squad...the guard position is going to be STACKED with the returns of several injured players in 08....anyways, I hope Gil comes back healthy to start the 06-07 basketball season....
