View Full Version : Will The Wiz Be A Major Player in 2010 FA?

ESPN recently posted a listing of the NBA players that could potentially become available over the next two summers in free agency. When I looked over the list, I was surprised to see how much salary the Wizards will drop during the big FA summer of 2010. It looks like we will have between $20-29 million coming off the books (depending on a couple of player opt outs). Look at the listing below from ESPN and there is a Hoops Hype chart that gives a better idea as well.

Honestly, I was one of the people devastated by the resigning of Arenas and Jamison because I thought it would cripple our cap flexibility, but now I'm wondering if I should have hope that we can bring in another superstar and really make a run at a few championships.
I have this basic understanding of our situation, but does anyone have an idea of how our payroll will look and what flexibility we will have? I completely understand that being under the luxury threshold is different than being under the cap, but I don't know what our outlook will be with these new contracts and our current contracts.
Please share if anyone knows what kind of player we can be in that summer and what type of money we will have to play with. I think that with Arenas/Butler/Jamison, young prospects of Blatche/Pecherov/Young/McGee, and the overall attraction of being in Washington, DC, we could be in one of the best positions in the league to bring in a Lebron, DWade, Amare if our money is right. I also think that some assets we've acquired, such as the Memphis pick and Veremeenko, could help make us a viable sign and trade partner.
If we do have that type of money, any thoughts on what the Wiz could potentially do?

I'm sure we will have resigning to do of guys like Haywood and Butler and possibly Blatche and Young. Too many factors could play into IMO.
but I'd like to see us make a run at Nowitzki.

Im not sure how much of a player we will be in free agency, but there is no way we will be getting Lebron, or D-wade, with Arenas, Butler, and Jamison still on the team. Too many stars.

this just shows how good of a job the FO did this offseason of keeping the talent. Looking down this list, I don't see a team with more short term security than the wizards

I see us trying to resign Haywood, McGuire, and maybe Songaila and Stevenson. As for Daniels, I think that will depend on if we're able to acquire a decent backup in the 09 off season or Dee Brown pan out then he's gone.
Of course this all depends on how the 09 season goes... if we make a deep push in the playoffs they're gonna try and keep most of everybody together, and if they blow it in the first round again then I could see D-Song and Stevenson out without question, and maybe Wood.

In the 09 season, I can forsee a Dirk for AD, Etan, Blatche/McGee, and a 1st round pick type of trade.

Please reference 2008 when thinking about those offseasons.
We were over 30M under the cap this year and we re-signed two very good players instead of getting 4or 5 very good players that wouldnt break the bank.
Would you rather have Gil and AJ or Barnes, Beidrins, Posey, House and Mutombo?
I think the depth of the latter would outweigh the benefits of a ballhogging PG and an aging PF that only has a few very good years left.

I'd rather have the 30ppg guard who makes other scorers even better and the 20/10 PF and leader of the team than the 6.7 ppg foward, 10/10 Center, a solid role player, a backup point guard, and a 60 year old Center. By the way since you said we were over $30M under the cap I'm guessing you don't really know how the salary cap works in the NBA.

hfmonk,
I am not trying to be rude.. but anyone in their right mind who would choose that combination of players over two all stars and one of them being all nba, is just flat out ridiculous. Barnes, Beidrens, Posey, House and Mutombo would ensure us a place in the NBA draft lottery. Is that a serious post?

I honestly thought at first it was a joke, but realize now that it isnt. Why would we want to give up on 2 all star caliber players for 5 backups? It's not like our bench is thin...
Amazing

I don't believe that in two years we will resign Daniels, Songaila, Stevenson, or Etan if we have any say in the matter. Haywood is the only one that I can see us potentially resigning, but with all the investments we've made in young big men, I don't think he is in the long term plans.
I just know that we might have $28 million come off the books at the same time while we would still have arenas, jamison, butler, mcgee, blatche, young, pecherov, vermeenko, and mcguire (restricted) under contract. We will most likely add a couple of pieces over the next couple of years in draft picks and cheap signings. That will leave a large chunk of money and not a lot of roster space.
Our current prospects will be seasoned enough to be solid contributors, Gil and Caron will still be in their primes, and Jamison will be a key contributor because he will only be in his mid-30's and he doesn't have an injury-prone style of play.
I see a very attractive situation here for a super star to come in on a playoff experienced team where they won't have to shoulder the load by themselves. We might even get a situation like a Garnett or Elton Brand, where the star takes a shot at championships and $15 million a year instead of max contracts.
This is all very much wishful thinking, but I think we've positioned ourselves for it to be a real possibility.

That's what I'm hoping for.

I would take those 5 consistently healthy over 2 all stars that cant stay off the IR and that bring the team down by not being there consistently.....Beidrins is a big starter and better than anything we have at PF or C right now. Barnes is a developing PF that can play defense. The other 3 are an upgrade for our bench which needs further upgrading. AD would be a good enough PG to play as starter until we can upgrade. Posey is a greatly talented winner off the bench and dont tell me you dont want him, because almost everyone here agrees he would be a great p/u for us.

Just to let you know we weren't $30M under the cap so its a moot point anyways, we were about $16M under so we probably could have gotten about 2 or 3 of those players mentioned

Posey would be a great pick up....as a compliment to Arenas, Butler, and Jamison.
