E. Jordan To Be Named Next Coach of Wizards

Eddie Jordan, a Washington native who played at Carroll High School, will be named head coach of the Washington Wizards Thursday, league sources confirmed. Jordan, who has spent the past four seasons as the lead assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets, accepted the position today after interviewing with team owner Abe Pollin and president Sudan O'Malley.

Sources said Jordan agreed to a four-year deal, but financial terms were unavailable. Pollin, O'Malley and Jordan could not be reached for comment.

By landing Jordan, the Wizards fill a major organizational void, left vacant when Pollin fired Doug Collins in late May. Washington also must hire a president of basketball operations, but Jordan felt comfortable enough with Pollin's proposal to accept the job without having his direct supervisor in place.

Jordan had been courted not only by the Wizards but also by the Philadelphia 76ers. He interviewed with the 76ers Tuesday but was not offered the job. The Nets let Jordan know they would do whatever they could to keep him as Byron Scott's top assistant -- one source said an overture of making Jordan the highest paid assistant in the league was discussed -- but Jordan's desire to be a head coach again made that a mute point.

Jordan coached the Sacramento Kings for the final 15 games of the 1996-97 season and the entire 1998-1998 season after spending five years as an assistant with the Kings. Jordan then left Sacramento for New Jersey.

Pollin, spurned by former Philadelphia Coach Larry Brown and ex-New York Knicks Coach Jeff Van Gundy, targeted Jordan after several strong recommendations from league officials. Over the past week, he began pursuit of the coach many in the NBA credit for establishing the Princeton-style, ball-movement offense in New Jersey and the development of power forward Kenyon Martin.

Pollin waited until the Nets finished the NBA championship series with the San Antonio Spurs -- the Nets lost four games to two -- before setting an interview with Jordan.

Pollin escorted Jordan around the team's MCI Center facilities today, had him meet with some of the existing staff and the two watched some of the workout of Georgia small forward Jarvis Hayes, a potential draft pick by the Wizards, who hold the No. 10 selection.

Is this a good choise? I really don't know. Kind of hoped they would pull a fan from the audience and let a different fan coach each home game. Winners would get a paid trip to coach away games.

This is a smart move. No retread. Ok, he's head coached alittle

This guy was loved by the Nets who went to the finals twice in a row.

Now just get him a quality GM and leave them alone for a few years.

I'd like to say "good selection", but I have absolutely no confidence in the Wizards FO to put together all the pieces. The GM and decent players still need to be found. Can they break the cycle of ineptitude?.....I just can't get my head to nod yes.

I wonder how he did when he coached the Kings. It's encouraging to see that the Nets and Sixers felt so highly of him. At least this position is finally filled, hopefully, he can be influential in developing some of our young talent. (Kwame, Thomas, Dixon and Jeffries)

I don't like the potential hiring of Len Elmore, he doesn't seem like he's capable of taking the GM position and being successful with it.

So, tell me why an F1 team owner would coach the Wizards of all teams???

Game breaker, I think he had a moderately horrible record with the Kings. Kornheiser put it in todays column. roughly 30- 60.

Yuck.

But it he can win 50% here he will be a hero.

How can you say that? Len has been very succesful in his career. He has a Harvard Law Degree, started his own business. Has a lot of contacts througout the NBA and has a good name, this is what the wizards need. The need someone the other teams will talk to. I think he would be sensational hire. Remember a lot of GM's make it without much experience, it depends on who you surround yourself with.

After saying that I hope they go after the NY Nick hall of famer. He was president of the union at one point, you can't go wrong there.

I'm hoping that EJ can do for Kwame what he did for K Mart. This team is very raw and he won't have a problem making it "his" I just hope he can do a good job and that the front office will actually give him something to work with.

when EJ coached Sac-town, they sucked.. Phil Jackson couldn't have made that team good

plus, i think he learned a lot in NJ which helped him to grow as a coach

i love this move

Coaching K-Mart is hugh. If this is really a done deal. He should start working with Kwame right now.

I hope this means that people are patient with this. I think this will mean Stack stays also.

Pollin has been saying that if season ticket holders are disappointed with the teams offseason moves and the year he will refund their money

at this point, i'd still want my money back. I want to see who the new GM is AND who they draft.

I don't personally have tickets but.....you know.
