The Washington Capitals have traded winger Anson Carter to Los Angeles in exchange for prospect Jared Aulin, league sources said. Carter was acquired for Jaromir Jagr in January but makes $2.8 million, and Washington, in the midst of an unprecedented salary dump, was not planning on making him a qualifying offer to retain his services.

Thus, rather than lose Carter for nothing as an unrestricted free agent this summer, the Capitals dealt him. Carter was leading Washington with 15 goals and he joins Jagr, Peter Bondra, Robert Lang, Sergei Gonchar, Steve Konowalchuk and Michael Nylander as key players dealt this season. The Kings began tracking Carter the night he was dealt to Washington, anticipating his availability, and have also expressed interest in winger Mike Grier.

Aulin, 22, was selected 47th overall by Colorado in 2000 and was dealt to the Kings in 2001. The center-right wing stands at 6 feet, 192 pounds and broke into the NHL last season, scoring two goals in 17 games. He scored 44 points in 44 games with Los Angeles' top minor league affiliate last season.

The Capitals are also shopping goalie Olaf Kolzig, defenseman Brendan Witt and Grier around the NHL, numerous sources said, with the trade deadline set for 3 p.m. Tuesday. Ottawa, Washington's opponent tonight, was making a strong push to land both Kolzig and Witt, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, while Colorado, Philadelphia and Vancouver were also exploring trades for Kolzig, who has $12.75 million left on his salary.
