TORONTO -- Former Washington Capitals defenseman Calle Johansson came out of retirement on Tuesday and signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 37-year-old Johansson retired from the NHL last August after playing 1,101 career games with Buffalo and Washington, finishing with 119 goals and 410 assists. He played a career-high 82 games for Washington last season, collecting 15 points. He is Washington's career leader among defensemen in assists (410) and points (529).

Johansson scouted for Washington after retiring. He said the Maple Leafs contacted the Capitals about a month ago about the possibility of him playing again.

"It's been a dream of mine to win the Stanley Cup and Toronto has a great chance of doing that," Johansson said.

Johansson played for Sweden in 1998 Olympics, 1996 World Cup, the 1991 and 1992 world championships and the 1986 and 1987 world junior championships.

The Maple Leafs also picked up forward Chad Kilger off waivers from Montreal.

The 27-year-old Kilger had two goals and two assists in 36 games for the Canadiens this season.
