in our new division we are not that far from being a playoff team. what moves or specific moves can be done to make us a playoff team?
For myself, I tthink this would be:
1. trading stack for harrington
2. getting rid of laettner in the expansion draft and using dixon and money as enticement for the bobcats to take him
3. signing a center who can compete with the best in the league such as marcus camby if he can come at 5 to 6 million a season or signing mark blount as a second option
4. adding keon clark for veterans minimum for depth; he is coming off an injury so his stock may be down
5. adding a quality backup at SG (hopefully for vet minimum) who is better than dixon who can serve as our 7th or 8th man while jarvis is the 6th man
6. resigning etan thomas to a 1-year deal or if some team tries signing him, get something back in a sign-and-trade deal, such as the backup shooting guard mentioned above.
7. drafting euros with potential in this league. i want biedrins in the first round and khryapa in the 2nd. let them develop in euro leagues where they get playing time. bring them in in 2 years and let them shine.

I definitely think the wiz need to add some quality players in the low post, whether it be PF or C.
I would also agree with points #6 & 7 on your list...

I would rather trade Stack and Hughes, who finally has earned some value, for a true pass-first point guard and a big man. Arenas is great at creating for himself, but not so much for others. If there was a true PG creating shots for others, including Arenas, the offense would flow that much smoother.

basically we need to get rid of Stack, get a TRU proven Small Foward, then get Erik Dampier to play Center.....we need to do this in order for us to be good.

yeah, but look at his turnovers, and how well he runs the offense? you don't have to record assists to run the offense. and if you watched the games, gilbert cannot run the offense, he prefers to be the offense. in running the offense steve blake is alot better then gilbert. one sign of a great PG is not # of assists, but does he make his teammates better? does gilbert? no. he can only do it if he stops shooting, and he is too good a scorer to telll him to stop. thus move him to the 2. its that simple.

gilbert is not big enough to play SG. playing SG will shorten his career as it has done to iverson who is clearly not as good a player as he was 2 years ago. i heard that gilbert was watching kidd in the playoffs so he may be studying to become a true point guard

but if we get an oversized pg to play D on a SG then it would work.

can livingston play defense? i believe his passing abilities could make the princeton offense work for us and allow gilbert to do what he does best, score.
here is a new brief summary of what i want:
1. do the proposed 3-way trade i proposed in the thread
2. draft livingston and kevin martin in the 2nd, if he not there look for PJ Ramos, if ramos not there look for the best available center prospect (prlly ha seung jin).
3. sign stephen jackson, using some of the 8-9 mil that we will now have in cap, hawks may try to resign him because they have like no one under contract for next season. hopefully we can pry away jackson while the hawks concentrate on terry. we should try signing him to a deal that pays him 3 to 4 mil annually. he is actually big enuff to play SF at 6-8 and is good on both the offensive and defensive ends. a major steal in my opinion. (he is not being mentioned anywhere)
4. sign greg ostertag. what we need at center is a big and physical guy who can rebound and take pressure off of kwame. he doesnt necessarily have to be a good scorer just solid. ostertag fits this bill. he will get nothing that resembles his old contract that paid him 8.5 million last season. we should sign him to a 3-year deal like jackson with a team option for a 4th year that costs us about 4 mil annually. but i think we should try going after mark blount first and offer him more than the celtics will.
4. resign etan thomas to a one-year deal by convincing him that teams will try harder to sign him as a UFA.
so here is what our lineup would be:
PG- livingston
SG- arenas
SF- jackson
PF- kwame
C- ostertag
Backups at Backcourt: s. blake, l. hughes, mitchell butler, jarvis hayes, c. whitney (assumes that dixon taken in expansion draft)
Backups at Frontcourt: e. thomas, b. haywood, pj ramos, l. baxter
now i think that is a team that can surely get a playoff birth with livingston's passing opening up things for everyone else. with livingston, gil could have an all-star year.

The most important acquisition the Wizards could make this offseason is to trade their losing attitude for a winning one. Last year's team was extremely talented even with the injuries, and if everyone can be a little less selfish, and a little more concerned on winning, this team can certainly be a force in the East.

the players we get thru trades and FA should have a playoff pedigree. winners can clear the losing attitude in the locker room. we are in position to get this oversized PG. this is sean livingston. i believe getting livingston will be the key to getting the princeton offense to work.
livingston will increase the efficiency of the princeton offense and reduce the number of mistakes. arenas can do wut he does best at the 2 spot which is score.
someone wanted a real SF, that is stephen jackson who can score and defend. only problem wuz he had some problems with turnovers last year.
