This is from the washington post.

Celtics May Pursue Thomas

The Boston Celtics will pursue Washington Wizards restricted free agent center Etan Thomas when the free agency period begins July 1, according to a league official who asked not to be identified.

Thomas is the Celtics' top free agent target and, according to the source, they are willing to offer him a salary starting at $5.1 million, the league-allotted mid-level exception.

Washington has the right to match any offer for Thomas since he is a restricted free agent, however, it might not be willing to pay the 6-foot-9 inside presence as much as the mid-level exception, based on conversations with team and league officials earlier this season.

If Washington were to lose Thomas, it likely would prompt the Wizards to pursue a free agent big man with the $6.6 million it will have under the salary cap, a total combining the mid-level and the $1.5 million exception awarded to teams every other season.

The Celtics' pursuit of Thomas comes as they are looking to fortify their front court, which could take a huge loss with the possible departure of free agent center Mark Blount. Thomas, who had the best season of his four-year career last season, mainly because he was healthy for the first time, backed up starter Brendan Haywood, but was frequently used in the fourth quarters of games because of his rebounding and shot-blocking prowess. He played 79 games, averaging 8.9 points and 6.7 rebounds

altho we will prolly lose out on thomas (i would not be willing to pay a backup big man 5 million a season), i think we can use this money to grab one of the 2nd tier centers in FA. if the bobcats take laettner we will then have 12 million under the cap which we can easily use to sign dampier and a starting small forward.

Honestly I see no good news in this.

I think the Bobcats chances of taking Laettner are slim to none.

Also, as I have said before this is not the Skins throwing around money. I don't think it will nearly as easy for us to attract free agents as you say.

I hope I am proven wrong...

We cannot lose Etan. Guys like him are invaluable to a team, and all successful teams need a hustle guy like Etan that can go out and do the dirty work. He reminds me of a mini Ben Wallace

heh watch thomas become a star and thrive in boston. but the thing is that, i think, while most teams are not prepared to offer players like blount the full exception, we can do that readily. i do not want to overpay for him but something like a 4 year 24.4 million dollar deal sounds good to me. he insists that he is not trying to look for big bux but that is hard to believe when you consider the fact that he has earned less than a million each season he has played in the nba.

I have to agree. Etan does the dirty work when he is in. There aren't many guys like that and they must be kept. I see Etan becoming a solid backup PF who can perform spot duty as a starter, a la Aaron Williams, Corliss Williamson, Jerome Williams, etc.

ehh yea this sux. i really like him. but i think paying him 5.1 mil and having that eat up our salary cap is not something we should do either. i think that if the celtics offer etan 5.1 mil a season then they r overpaying for sure.

we can't lose etan, and i think after all the pub about the detroit wizards our front office knows it too.5 mill for a backup? as far as i'm concerned he's our only star in the front court. haywood sucks. at this point in his career etan is better then ben wallace was when he was here. we have to match the celtics and danny ainge can go to hell.

actually by his 3rd year here big ben was averaging almost 9 rpg and he was a steals master and blocks master back then also. etan averaged only 7 rpg and proved he cant start wit us when we gave him a shot

I don't think we'll lose Etan.

We need to do everything in our power to keep Etan Thomas around. Yes 5 mill may be overpaying him but we are going to lose not only a backup bigman but also all the intangibles that Etan brings to the table(hustle, energy, 4th quarter stability in the middle) The man is an athlete much more than I can say for Haywood.
I dont see us finding a better Big man on the open market around the same price range except maybe Mark Blount and I am not completely sold him. . Could someone post the upcoming big men free agents available that culd be had for the mid level exception?

They should sign Etan back and plus Etan should be starting over Haywood anyway.

I agree, you lose nothing starting Etan at center over Haywuss...

We are so short on big men that I think we have to match Boston's offer. Is it over paying? Probably, but I don't think we really have a choice...

Etan is not better than Haywood. Etan is a terrible man-to-man defender (he's a good weak side defender). His assist numbers are abysmal and he has no low post game. Haywood is 7 feet with long arms and is developing a hook shot. If Etan is so great, why does he have a negative +- ratio.

leon,

some of the centers that may be had for the midlevel exception include mark blount, mehmet okur, prolly greg ostertag, maybe maybe camby. i think a steal in FA this year will be keon clark. the dude's value is seriously down bcause i think that he was injured for most of last season. i want us to sign him to the vet minimum to play backup for us.
