I hate to do this to you guys again, but I saw it on ESPNEWS. I like to leave it on while I work and browse.
Do you guys like it? Would you have rather had Al Harrington? The said Twan should be an all-star in the Eastern Conference.

I hope it wasn't Juan, can you believe he was left unprotected and Charlotte didn't take him? I hope we don't give up on him like we did with Rip.

Wow.
Jamison is a great and underrated player who was in a bad situation in Dallas - he's starting caliber, can contribute immediately, and signals that there's no way the Wiz are keeping Stack. Hughes, Arenas, and Jamison make for a pretty darn good shooting team.
Of course, he will now trip and fall and break all of the bones in his body.

I really like this move, I wasn't to thrilled with what we could have gotten at the #5. I've liked Jamison for quite a while and thought either he or Shareef Abdur Raheim would have made a good fit with the Wiz. But didn't he, Arenas, and Hughes all play in Golden State together?
Saint Joe

The only year Arenas and Twan played together was in Arenas' rookie year, when Arenas barely played.

Good post, accept my apology for the suggested clowning.

I'm praying Stack was involved as well, and maybe the Wiz were able to steal Josh Howard away as well. My only concern about Jamison though, is that he's signed to a max deal. I'm not sure for how long though.

Im going nuts! I love it.
Our starting line up will most likley look like *as of now*
C : Haywood
PF: Kwame
SF: Jamison
SG: Hughes
PG: Gil
That isn't too bad for an East team right there.

June-23rd-2004, 09:32 PM
My only worry here.. Well two of them actually are:
Hughes, Arenas and Jamison all played together for a year in Golden State and if I recall correctly were broken up because of the inability to get along and put up enough victories.
I think the the main issue though was Arenas and Hughes at the time, but I'm not a warriors fan so I dont remember all the details as to why that threesome was broken up. Fact is though that they were together once before and failed to produce as a team... How is this any different?
Secondly, what is Jamisons cap number?.. I'm interested to know if this frees up any room to pursue additional free agents.

Wow, how about that divine intervention, eh? For once, we traded small for big without a gigantic age gap... We are a few pieces away from contending: Center, consistent PF, and a guy that can distribute the ball (hopefully Gill will assume this role).

Hopefully,
After letting Stack and Laettner go in the trade. We have a little cap room left to sign a FA. Even though Jamison numbers are somewhat huge. The Stack and Laettner contracts should have balanced out a little.
Now! with that 2nd round pick, who do we take?

Well, well. I couldn't be any happier. I didnt really want anyone at our pick at 5 and thought we should trade the pick all along.
We did and in return got a pretty good player and dumped two big contracts too. Very well done, EG.
And it's not like our second round pick will be a throwaway pick. There are still some good choices at that spot.

ESPN is having a draft special at 10:000, and they'll no doubt talk about the trade.
And as for our 2nd rounder, I'd look for us to snag project big man. Maybe that 18 year old 7'3 Korean kid. We could convince him to go play in Europe for a couple of years and get some skillz.

Laettner is white sludge ( I am white so no catcalls about race okay? :) )
Stackhouse is damaged goods.
The #5 pick was a crapshoot, especially for a team that needed skilled front court players.
Jamison is a good guy and I think he will be a good addition here.
I don't think Brendan Haywood is going to be the starting center on this team as things move forward, ie I think more is coming.
Ernie Grunfeld is a professional GM and will straighten things out here over time.
Of course the situation was an absolute mess as Jordan was exiting.
So the pit is deep to climb out of.
Arenas is only 23 years old. He has already shown an ability to take a game over, albeit inconsitently and from a position that is not his natural position.
Eventually, Arenas will be moved to SG.
Jamison will improve the frontcourt.
Another vet should be acquired to provide interior defense up front.
Perhaps Larry Hughes gets dealt as well?
I am not yet willing to annoint Kwame Brown based on a 10.5 point, 7.4 rebound season as having arrived in the NBA, but he is showing measured improvement.
Big men take more time, and extremely immature big men take that much longer
Of course, some coaching helps as well :D

June-23rd-2004, 10:11 PM
Ernie made a good move. No waiting for another project kid. I think this is also a message to Kwame that they have faith in him. We've got a guy who's gotten pretty decent in the West....now he comes to the East...with a team who will mostly have their team already together. PLUS.....we'll most likely extend his deal, have more money to keep Etan....and maybe go after another FA.

The Wizards worked out a few big men during pre draft workouts. But none of them look intriguing and their stats were so so.
But the main object here is to try and keep Ethan. If Ethan departs, were gonna be pretty weak in the middle as if were not that already. We need a PF/C to help command the post. And hopefully some high school kid could rise to the occasion if available. Also, there's a bunch of PF/C out there in this draft that could be a project or sleeper.

Wizards Working on Deal
Jamison From Mavs for 2 Players, No. 5 Pick
By Steve Wyche and Greg Sandoval
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, June 24, 2004; Page D01
On the eve of the NBA draft, the Washington Wizards made a move to trade veterans Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner and the fifth overall pick of the NBA draft for reigning NBA sixth man of the year Antawn Jamison, according to sources close to the team.
The deal was close to being finalized late last night, said both sources.
The Wizards are eager to move Stackhouse and Laettner, players who the Wizards' management believed were negative influences in the club's locker room, said one source. Both players were left unprotected in the expansion draft and the Wizards were considering two other trade offers should the deal with the Mavericks fall through.
The Mavericks, who are pursuing a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers for center Shaquille O'Neal, wanted the Wizards' first-round pick in the hopes of using it in a deal for O'Neal.
Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld has said repeatedly in the weeks leading up to tonight's NBA draft that the available talent was stocked with "extremely young players."
For the Wizards, who are already waiting for players such as Kwame Brown, Juan Dixon, and Jared Jeffries to blossom, the prospect of taking another unproven player may have appeared unattractive to the team.
Instead, the Wizards will obtain the 6-foot-9, 225-pound Jamison, who would start for the Wizards and could become one of the premiere small forwards in the Eastern Conference. He averaged 14.8 points and 6.3 rebounds this past season as a reserve.
Stackhouse, who averaged 13.9 points this past season but was limited to 26 games because of an assortment of injuries, has fallen out of the favor with Wizards' management.
Before the season, Stackhouse was arrested after allegedly assaulting a real estate agent during a quarrel over when he was required to leave a rented beach house.

haha fixer26er im here. just got home. this is something you might shrug ur shoulders on. jamison is being paid a max deal. laettner's contract was expiring. but we did dump stack. and jamison is better than anything we could have gotten with the no. 5 pick. I think, in fact, this is a great deal, because of the chemistry arenas, hughes, and antawn all have together. no braggin but hey im the one who came up wit the idea in the first place =). another thing this does is let us use our exception on one player instead of 2. this means if we feel like it we can offer okur a big contract now or whoever else we want. altho not great for long term cap this is great for teh short term. i, in fact, would love to have okur or mark blount.
if we get okur then we will be giving the heat some stiff competition next year for division champ.

Stack makes $7M this year, L8 makes about $6.5M, and the #5 pick is slotted at around $2.2M, so we sent about $15.5M to Dallas.
Jamison makes about $12.5M this season, so we get about an extra $3M on this deal.

Great trade. Wizards get a great player who can reach 20 points, 7-8 rebounds, 1.5-2 assists, a steal, and a block per game. Definately all-star caliber in the east. The only problem is that he is either a small forward or a slightly undersized power forward when the Wizards play the West.

One thing to note is that the ex-Golden State trio of Hughes, Arenas and Jamison played great 2 years ago and made a run for the playoffs (i believe).......and this was in the West. Just imagine what these guys, now with more experience, and Jamison having "playoff" (ooooh) experience, could potentially do in the East.

I am not overly in favor of Okur. I see him as more of a Luc Longley type guy. The guy who I have been thinking that I would love to see the Wizards get is actually another Warrior, which scares me, and that is Dampier. This guy was an absolute monster this past year. He would be the best center available and he would help us tremendously, but we would definitely be know as the Warriors East from now on, if we are already not being called that already.

Hughes was with us that season, J-Rich was their SG, but they looked like the young and up and coming team out West, but Arenas bolted and Jamison was dealt. Hopefully we re-sign Etan, and sign a solid veteran, and we should be a pretty good team. Should be good, unfortunately those 3 words never work out when talking about the Wiz. At the very least, they'll be fun to watch.

With the young players we have like
Ethan
Jeffries
Hayes
Dixon
Blake
Gilbert
Hughes
Jamison
Brown
Haywood
Butler
And possibly another FA and our #2 pick.
This could be a awesome team in the East if only they contniue to grow together. We have great shooters at the guard position and a abundance of size in the Forward positions. Not only that, but their all young and can run the floor. If we get lucky and keep Ethan, bring in another quality center (doesn't have to be a all-star) and maybe another true PG. That's if Blake doesn't work out and Dixon and Gilbert move to their true positions.
Frankly, we have alot of room to rotate players at the guard positions and forward positions. But that's only possible at forward if Kwame pans out at the forward position. Then, all we really need is a PG and true Center to either beat out haywood or play under or before him. Also, Haywood needs to continue improving in order for this team to be awesome in the East.
People. this squad is starting to pan out and can only get better with playing together and adding more pieces as we go. We have the young agile talent and size. But another slasher or a lone slasher in the Richard Jefferson form could also be added.
People, I think were gonna have us a descent Basketball team. I know we heard and said this before. But IMO, Jamison, Hughes and Gilbert alone changes the aspect and the look of the team. Now! again. If Kwame,Ethan,Jeffries and Hayes continue to get better and play with some true passion and nastyness. This team will be something to deal with.

I see where some have criticized Jamison for not playing defense. where has he played in the NBA that has stressed defense...Golden State , Dallas...i think not. he played defense for the Tar heels.
forget about draft picks , the wiz needed a veteran front court player who could be a legitimate threat. He will make life much easier for our developing young front court players. this is a great trade and a no-brainer. there is NOTHING in this draft that could benefit a team in our situation. the last thing we need is another 'developing' young player. we got tons of 'em (Brown, Jeffries, Hayes, Arenas, Blake, Thomas etc. you can find fault with anything if you try but it is pretty hard to reason against this one. there are no guarantees but this move was excellent. having a legit GM is nice.

Jamison was one of the only Dallas players that played defense last year
at least we get some extra money to go after another post player and the ability to keep etan :point2sky

I first heard about this trade as I was driving to work this morning and it put a big smile on my face. I am so glad that we got rid of Christian and even happier to get rid of Jerry. Both players seemed a cancer to the team, especially Jerry. At least Christian wanted to play. Anyway, I don't know a lot about Antwan, except that he won the NBA's Sixth Man Award last year. Also, he is a scorer. Other than that I will have to research him more, but when I hear his name I think of "good player". Thank you Ernie for being aggressive and hopefully we aren't done yet. I think it is imperative to keep Etan and if we do that I don't care what else we do. I can see him turning into a special player like Ben Wallace has.

Lest we forget TXREDSKIN, that the bullets are in the newly minted South division, the not-yet-so talented Bobcats, the consistently underacheivign Hawks and the upstart Heat...we could surprise.

Jamison came in expecting to be a starter, only to be supplanted by Antoine Walker - and he accepted it and was OK about it. That tells you something about him that you would never see in Jerry Craphouse.

Team-player comes to mind. Getting rid of Jerry is almost as big as gaining a new player IMO.

Yea, Dampier would be great. He is kind of like a Ben Wallace, tough on the boards and on D plus he has a little bit of an offensive game as well.

Ranks #1 in the NBA in Offensive Rebounds(344.0)
Ranks #1 in the NBA in Offensive Rebounds Per Game(4.6)
Ranks #12 in the NBA in Defensive Rebounds(543.0)
Ranks #11 in the NBA in Defensive Rebounds Per Game(7.3)
Ranks #3 in the NBA in Total Rebounds(887.0)
Ranks #15 in the NBA in Blocks(137.0)
Ranks #1 in the NBA in Offensive Rebounds Per 48 Minutes(6.9)
Ranks #5 in the NBA in Defensive Rebounds Per 48 Minutes(10.8)
Ranks #1 in the NBA in Rebounds Per 48 Minutes(17.7)
Ranks #9 in the NBA in Efficiency Ranking Per 48 Minutes(29.6)
He just had his career year, but on the downside, he is turning 30 in a few weeks. He would be a stop-gap for a few seasons for us, hopefully teaching Brendan and Kwame a little, but he should put us over the top in terms of making the playoffs.

Arenas is quirky but he is an awesome talent. sometimes he seems like he can do anything he wants to on the court.

Kwame has had his ups and downs and folks love to call him a bust. but i still think he could be a star. i like him because he is not a punk. he's not scared of anyone and likes to play in the paint (unlike so many big guys). letting him play some center is a good idea.
*
Jarvis Hayes, who i hope we don't trade could also be a star. he showed some serious signs last season. he can shoot the lights out and isn't afraid to hit the boards.
*
Jared Jeffries - can play almost anywhere - high basketball IQ.
Larry Hughes - now that he can consistantly hit the jumper and also the trey, his game is as complete as any 2 guard.
*
Jordan has got to get them to play team first and hopefully have a healthy squad. as usual all we have around here is hope but that's better than nothing. Jamison will demand attention and that will (should) make a big difference.
it helps to have a legit GM.

I absolutely love Antwan Jamison. I am so happy this deal is going down!!!
Jamison is the ****!
Now if only we could get Vince Carter over here and start remaking that great UNC team. We'll just replace Ed Coda with Gilbert though!

That is a very true statement. There are times that he is so fast and explosive that it just seems like he can do whatever the hell he wants, he'll just get by whoever is guarding him. He just needs to get some more experience. People forget that he's only like 22.
