For the first time in memory, a Washington team finally reaped the benefits of being awful...........having the first pick in the draft in a year where a truly special player is available to be taken :D
The Capitals getting Ovechkin makes the firesale in 2003 worthwhile. While overexpansion and depletion of the farm team system has resulted in an appaling lack of offensive talent on many NHL teams, the Capitals now have a throwback player.
A player that combines size, speed and vision. Think a player that can score 50 goals and contribute on special teams, including shifts to kill penalties.
In a bizarre twist, the departure of Jagr and his buddy Lang, actually made possible the team's acquisition of a player with star ability.
Except in this case, hopefully, Ovechkin will be showing off that ability IN a Washington uniform on a game by game basis, something that the 32 year old Jagr never did.
