Adrian Beltre and the Orioles. Beltre could be this year's Ivan Rodriguez, lingering on the market until a surprise bidder emerges. New Dodgers owner Frank McCourt figures to balk at re-signing Beltre, citing Beltre's lack of track record and Boras' high price tag. The Mariners and Tigers are among the teams that could use Beltre. But the Mariners rarely spend big and play in a park that neutralizes righthanded power. The Tigers' park is a similar deterrent.

The Orioles, seeking a righthanded slugger, would prefer a first baseman or outfielder to avoid disrupting third baseman Melvin Mora. Free-agent third baseman Troy Glaus would be ideal if he were willing to move to first. A better plan would be to sign Beltre and stick Mora back in center field. Beltre would join shortstop Miguel Tejada in providing dynamic leadership, superior defense and big-time power.

I don't see Beltre coming to the Orioles. The O's are gonna push for Pavano and Lowe to head the rotation and trade (Hairston, Bedard, Matos, Riley, or prospects) for another starter. If they add a bat it'll be Ordonez or Delgato. They're currently talking to Gibbons for a 1 year deal and if they sign him, they'll push for Delgato.

Beltre was a great player last year and it looks as if he is often overlooked as a top free agent. His numbers last season certainly demand a huge contract, upwards of $12 million per year, but I'm hoping the Orioles stay away from Beltre. First and most importantly, Mora has been forced into a position change nearly every year since he's been with the Orioles. He's 33, hit .340 last year, and is a team leader. It's time the Orioles show Mora a little bit of respect and give him some stability as the starting third basemen for years to come. Also, Beltre has all the potential in the world, but has been mediocre in his first few years in the league unitl last year. Last year, Beltre was playing for a new contract, though I can't tell you if that was a factor in his MVP-caliber season. What I can tell you, however, is that Beltre would be a risky acquisition at a very high price. I say pass on Beltre.

While I'm on the Orioles, I'd also like to share my opinions on their upcoming offseason. This is the year the Orioles are supposed to contend, and whether or not they contend with be predicated upon who they bring in. Please, no Derek Lowe! His ERA the past two seasons has been near 5 and has not been a solid regular season starter since three years ago. I have a feeling that his tweleve scorless innings in the playoffs will prompt the Orioles to overpay for Lowe, who will have a disappointing season. Quite frankly, Lowe has not been a very good pitcher anytime the past two seasons with the exception of the playoffs, which is not where the Orioles will find themselves if they sign Derek Lowe.

I hope the Orioles pursue guys like Radke, Pavano, or Milton. There are plenty of upper end starters on the free agent market, so hopefully the Orioles will pursue the right ones for a change. I'd also like to see the Orioles upgrade at first base, possibly with Delgado, as well as in the outfield.
