The Major League Baseball franchise scheduled to move to Washington completed a trade for troubled Anaheim outfielder Jose Guillen today, giving up outfielder Juan Rivera in return.
Guillen, 28, hit .294 with 27 home runs and drove in 104 runs with the Angels in 2004, but he was suspended for the final eight games of the regular season and left off the team's playoff roster after throwing a tantrum when he was removed from a game for a pinch runner on Sept. 25. Guillen had a confrontation with manager Mike Scioscia during the tantrum.
In eight major-league seasons with six teams, Guillen hit .274 with 110 home runs and 458 RBI. Jim Bowden, the general manager of the Washington franchise, had signed Guillen in 2002 as a minor league free agent when Bowden was the GM of the Cincinnati Reds.
Guillen is due to make $3.5 million in 2005.
To obtain Guillen, Washington gave up Rivera, a 26-year-old outfielder who was once one of the prime prospects in the New York Yankees organization. Rivera, acquired from the Yankees along with first baseman Nick Johnson in a trade last year for pitcher Javier Vazquez, led the Montreal Expos with a .307 average in 2004, and hit 12 homers with 49 RBI.
On Tuesday, the Washington team -- which is expected to be renamed the Nationals on Monday -- signed two free agents, third baseman Vinny Castilla and shortstop Cristian Guzman.
