Houston (33-24) at Washington (31-24)
Game Info: 7:00 pm EST Wed Mar 2, 2005
TV: FxSW, CSNB
If the Washington Wizards aren't Tracy McGrady's favorite opponent, they have to be very high on his list. McGrady will try to continue his domination of the Wizards and help the Houston Rockets complete a season series sweep of Washington at the MCI Center.
The reigning two-time scoring champion is averaging 39.4 points in his last five meetings with Washington, including a career-high 62 against the Wizards as a member of the Orlando Magic last March 10.
He broke the Magic team record of 53 points set by Shaquille O Neal in 1994 after going 20-for-37 from the field. The All-Star swingman also made 17 of 26 free throws.
Traded to Houston this past offseason, McGrady continues to torment the Wizards. He had 34 points on 14-of-22 shooting against Washington on Feb. 15, when the Rockets took the first meeting 123-93 to go into the All-Star break on a season-high eight game win streak.
The Rockets began the second half with three straight losses before posting a 119-89 win at Chicago on Tuesday. Houston shot 56 percent (45-for-81), starting a stretch in which they'll play six of seven away from the Toyota Center.
McGrady had 32 points and seven assists in 31 minutes and point guard Mike James, acquired at the trade deadline from Milwaukee, added 26 points and five assists.
``This is pretty crucial for us. Coming off a three-game skid, we definitely wanted to come in here and start this road trip off right,'' McGrady said. ``I think guys realize we have a crucial schedule ahead of us.''
The Wizards had a five-game home winning streak snapped Sunday with a 110-108 loss to Sacramento. Washington has lost five of its last six overall.
Gilbert Arenas matched his career high with 43 points for Washington. He went 16-for-32, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range, in his fourth 40-point game of the season.
The shooting guard ranks fifth in the NBA in scoring, and is averaging 36.3 points over his last three games. Fellow All-Star Antawn Jamison was limited to just seven points on 3-of-15 shooting Sunday.
Kwame Brown started for the first time this season because of an injury to Jared Jeffries and had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wizards. Steve Blake scored a season-high 17 points in a season-high 34 minutes after Jarvis Hayes left the game in the second quarter with tendinitis in his right knee.
The Wizards also played without point guard Larry Hughes, who had targeted Sunday's game for his return from a fractured right thumb. Hughes decided to sit out after having another set of X-rays just before tip-off.
Despite the injuries, the Wizards already have six more wins than they did all of last season, when they finished 25-57.
``We don't want to let this thing slip away, with all that we've accomplished,'' said center Brendan Haywood.
``We're down right now, with Larry, Jarvis, Jared being hurt, guys being sick. It's easy to get things snowballed at the wrong time. But we still know we can go out there and win.''
The Wizards have lost seven of the last nine meetings with the Rockets.

Me too, Bugs. I find it odd that he was cleared to suit up vs. Memphis, but is keeping himself off the court. The media says he's returning tonight but if he's THAT worried about the thumb, it must still hurt pretty badly when he touches the ball.

Hughes's line: 13 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, including the game clinching steal off of T-MAC.

That was sweet.
They are looking at little out of sync again. It may take a few quarters for all the line ups to get in sync.
They should not let Kwame touch the ball :)
The offense isnt running as well with he touches it above the FT line.

He missed like 5 wide open three's, if he was wide open again, he should just drive and dump it off to Haywood/Brown, never again should he shoot a three if he misses 3 or more.

Was Larry out the last 20 games? He sure looked like he didn't miss a game....WOW. He is the reason we won tonight, without him we would of lost big. Brown is getting some rebounds and getting more in the flow. Great win. Brendan looked good inside as well, he is really developing a nice low post repetoire.

I wish he wouldnt try to hard to score. That spin move was great. Thats was what I want to see. He got it, felt if he could do something, spin right and quick left and to the hoop.
I dont want to see he forcing a post up move yet were hes backing someone down and facing up. I would rather have scene the 12 rbs and he moving to the open spot to get a pass like Hughes gave Haywood twice. Just get pts in the flow.
He disrupts the offense right now when his is in because the ball doesnt move around the horn as quickly. Ruffin is great at this. When he is in, the ball moves in and out of his hands nicely.
I hope Kwame can refrane from trying to do all the post offense and just grab 12 boards a nght. Crap if he could do that, he would be a star for that alone.

What I loved was whenever Kwame made a nice play the crowd at MCI gave him a nice small ovation. What the kid(yes at 22 he's still a kid)needs is confidence. He'll get there. 12 rebounds against Yao? That is impressive. Second straight game.
He doesn't need to score assloads of points. Thats what for Arenas, Hughes, and Jamison are for. Our big men just need to establish themselves as guys that can crash the boards and play D.
Great win. Hopefully we build on it with a rout against Golden State on the eve of my Birthday. :)

Brendon was a monster against Yao.
That block was great and the post move at the end was awesome. He played 31 Min with 2 PF. I would have liked to have seen him play 36 or move. When he was in, we did great.
Game ball goes to Haywood.
Hughes get the tough man award. You dont do that after being out 6 weeks. Hes a freak.

My thoughts exactly....it was actually just painful to watch at times. We without of doubt have the worst double team/trapping defense in the league. It might actually work well if the players rotated like they are suppose to, but the rotation is always about 5 seconds to late, until some realizes that someone is wide open.
On a better note, I thought Hughes looked great....especially missing 20 games

March-2nd-2005, 10:35 PM
I also don't have a clue why Eddy plays Ruffin late in games.......to be honest at that point he is a liability. He can't shot, can't make three thorws, and whenever he does drive to the basket to score he gets hacked and is luck to make 1 of 2 from the line.....
I think he is a decent fill in player when you need someone ot hussle for the second teamers, but you have to get this guy out the game with under 5 minutes to play

I'll take Ruffin over Etan. Ruffin is a better defender, knows his role, and plays team basketball. Etan is a black hole on offense. Did you see him go one on five tonight? He's a selfish player who doesn't look for his teammates. Haywood averages 3 times as many asissts as Etan. Kwame made two passes tonight that Etan would never make.

Yes I did see the game. I maybe was a little blunt when I said he shouldn't play in the last 5 minutes....but your a fool for not acknowledging that he is not an offesnive liability late in games especially (more so than Etan), when the score is close. Maybe in didn't bite the Wiz in the ass tonight......but you need guys on the court offensively that can make buckets and knock down free throws.......Ruffin can not do this.
Maybe you switch on change of possesions.....but you can't leave a guy out there who is an offensive liability during crunch time....and in the midst of a close game.

We need to sign Larry. It's a two for one deal. We get a much better HAywood on the floor with Larry. I had almost forgotten how much better Haywood plays with LH. Haywood just seems to be in the right spots for LH to find him.
Why didn't we foul with 6 seconds left? The Rockets were out of time outs. They would have gotten two free throws they would have had to make. They would have had to foul us imediately giving us two free throws, and then they would have had to start in their back court with very little time and no timeout to set something up. We won which is great, but if I can see it a little before the announcer who saw it in plenty of time to impliment it, why didn't we do it. Granted one announcer said he wouldn't do it, but I never heard a why.

A lot of great points made regarding the game last night.
I feel great that Im not alone (and havent been) on following or Wizards.
I have come to the conclusion that Haywood doesnt HURT our team on offense or defense....he's no Shaq but he plays solid D, takes good shots, always goes for the dunk when in traffic, and is the ONLY big man that can make atleast 1 FT when at the line.
Mad4comp made a great point stating that we are always struggling to get off our 3's when our oppenents are relaxing w/a Corona before shooting...its ridiculous.
Overall though...we did "contain" McGrady and Yao didnt light up the DC skyline so we did well i thought.
Houston is a VERY GOOD team (IMHO). And to get this win against a healthy Rockets team is very solid. But we need to take those 17 pt leads (in the 2nd half) and turn those into 25 pt games.
I also blame EJ for the defensive debacle that is our 3pt defense...until we play man up this will keep occuring.

O.K. my observations from last night....
Haywood did step up big....but, I still don't trust him taking that shot at the end. Those free throws were huge. I too love his D, but the man will trip over his own feet half the time on offense.
Blake.......
Stop hating guys. This isn't some guy who was a stud his fres/soph more year in college. He had to work on his game just like Juan had too. I guarantee you if he's given the chance to stay on this squad he will develop into a great leader off the bench. Remember guys...We're Young!
Brown.....If he stays healthy, he'll progress nicely. The guy has too much athletic talent not to. And it's not like this guy is a hot-head or trouble maker... He'll turn out better than Chandler and Curry....WATCH!
Hands11...I see us losing a couple of those games.... If we walk out of that 11 game stretch losing only 3-4 I'll be happy.

-I wish EJ wouldnt use Etan or Ruffin that much, Haywood is pretty good and should be in the game most of the times, even in the last 5 mins of the game.
-1 Corona ? They might as well coulda drank the whole six pack, and still made those 3 pointers.
-Jamison did good on Mcgrady, until the last 7 mins when Tracy just went off (inevitable), but we still kept him under 30 points.
-Houston was not healthy, they were missing Sura, which half of Rocket nation think is their savior .

They also booed him, if you payed close attention to the game they booed him twice. So he got 1 Standing O and 2 boo's, i say the boo's take it this time. :D Still he needs to learn to calm down and take timely shots, stop forcing things.

They were missing Sura? Wow i had no idea he was still in the league...did he ever get his mouth fixed?
Anyway the Rockets have good depth at the guard position (Wesley & Barry) and they have Mutombo to spell Yao. I was impressed w/Houston...I think they will make it a lot farther then most would think.
I would think that S.A. & Phx are clearly better (in the west) but besides that they are just as good as the Kings/Mavs/Sonics etc... but they will be stuck w/the #4 spot (like us) because they wont win the division.

My cousin and his friends were at the game, he called me up and told me they were booing Kwame. :/

well perhaps but there really wasn't anything that he deserved to be booed for...he is still getting his legs and in the 3 games he has been back he has put up 10+ rebounds in the last 2 games

If they were booing him, it was probably because this is a smarter BB town then people give us credit for.
I would imagine most fans want to see Kwame take it easy on offense. Specially with Hughes back. If he was forcing his offense and didnt score, you probably heard a boooo.
If he was hustling getting loss ball, rebounding and blocking shots, you probably heard cheers.
Listen Kwame. We arent dummys.
You can be a star. A hero.
Just become Ben Wallace, not J ONeal. You dont have to score right now. That will come later. We need you to relieve AJ.
Boards, Board, Boards.
Rebound and pass it back out.
Hughes and Gil will reward you with some easy feeds if your active under the hoop and run the breaks with them. Highlights baby.
You can make a name for yourself with 12 boards, 1 block, 1 steal a game. Thats more likely to happen, then you making a name for yourself scoreing 20pts a night. That just not going to happen on this team right now, but you can get all the boards your heart desires.
Grab the boards, be a star.
