VIERA, Fla. -- A sellout crowd of 7,558 fans saw the Nationals defeat the Mets 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon in their exhibition opener at Space Coast Stadium.
The score was tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Nationals scored the game-winning run off Mets reliever Felix Heredia.
After Terrmel Sledge singled to put runners on first and third, Jeffrey Hammonds hit a grounder to third baseman Miguel Cairo, who booted the ball and allowed Jamey Carroll to score the winning run.
The Nationals added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Brendan Harris singled to center field off Mike Matthews to score Carroll.
The winning pitcher was T.J. Tucker, who pitched one shutout inning.
Nationals right-hander Tony Armas Jr. and Mets starter Tom Glavine started the game and both pitched two shutout innings.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Mets plated two runs off left-hander Michael Hinckley.
Jason Phillips singled to right field to score Carlos Beltran and Doug Mientkiewicz scored the second run on an error by Hinckley, who was attempting to make the double play.
Nationals newcomer Jose Guillen made it a 2-2 game, however, by hitting a two-run home run off Aaron Heilman.
The Nationals then played sloppy baseball, which allowed the Mets to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
With Jon Rauch on the mound, Kazuo Matsui led off and reached on a two-base error by center fielder Endy Chavez. Two outs later, Phillips hit a line drive to Hammonds in left field. It looked like Hammonds had a bead on the ball, but it went over his head for a double, scoring Matsui.
In the bottom of the inning, the Nationals used the long ball off Heilman again, when catcher Keith Osik hit a solo home run over the left-field wall.
