WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals' new stadium will be built by a joint venture that includes a company that designed 15 of the last 23 major league parks.
The team of Hellmuth Obata Kassabaum (HOK) Sport Venue Entertainment, Inc. of Kansas City, Mo., and Devrouax & Purnell Architects-Planners of Washington were chosen Thursday by the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission.
The winning bid of $18.5 million was about $4 million lower than the next best of the eight bids submitted in February.
"The HOK/D&P joint venture was the strongest on design and cost, and they met the district's local contracting goals," commission CEO Allen Lew said.
"We look forward to working with this extremely talented team to develop a fresh, signature piece of architecture that reflects the new ballpark's place and status in the nation's capital," he added.
HOK led the design of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, PNC Park and PETCO Park, among others.
Washington's ballpark will be built along the Anacostia River waterfront, with the Nationals expected to move in for the 2008 season. Until then, the team -- which is moving from Montreal -- will play in RFK Stadium, which hosted baseball's Senators until 1971 and also was the home of the NFL's Redskins for many years.
