I was listening to todays post game show on the radio in the car and I heard something that we might not have a first round pick this year...anyone know why?

I believe we lost that pick in the Jamison trade....it is lottery protected but we will not be in the lottery this year so it is lost to us.

Didnt we lose it to Denver or Orlando ? I think we lost it when we got Brendan haywood for Laron Profit+1st round pick.

I think Denver has it now. So denver gets 2 first round picks :(

P.S i was just informed, since we are guaranteed a pick greater than 20th in the first round, we have to give it away to Orlando, who traded the rights for that pick to Denver...ghey..

Found this:

"8/1/01 Wizards trade Laron Profit and a conditional 1st round pick for center Brendan Haywood (taken 20th in 2001 NBA Draft) The Magic can take Washington's draft pick beginning in 2004, but the Wizards can keep the pick if it is among the first 20. The next season, it is protected through No. 13, and in 2006 it is protected only through the first three spots. If Orlando waits until 2007, the pick would be unconditional. "

No, we gave them Stackhouse and Laettener along with the #5 pick for Jamison.

We still have our 2005 first round pick.

Because we had a top 20 pick last year, we got to keep it, and so we sent it along with Laettner and Stackhouse for Jamison. Now this year since we have a pick greater than 20, it goes to Orlando because we traded our 1st rounder+Profit for the rights to brendan. Also that 1st rounder was lottery protected, so they get it only when we have a 1st rounder greater than 20th pick.

Argh, completely forgot about the Haywood deal. I hate these conditional picks.

It sucks now, but you know in about 2 years its gonna look like a steal when Haywood bulks up more, and starts showing authority on the court.

I don't think we need another young player on this team. We have sufficient youth at every position and we're going to be looking for some veterans at SF and/or PF in the offseason. No loss, as far as I'm concerned.

After the first 5 picks or so the draft isn't really all that much a big deal in the NBA.

Remember our own Gilbert Arenas was a 2nd round pick.

Yeah, it sucks, but we're going to end up giving Orlando a worse pick than Haywood was taken with, so it isn't that bad. Looking at how Haywood has become a solid big man, it was a really good trade. And from Orlando's perspective, they ultimately traded Haywood for Jameer Nelson, but the jury is still out on Nelson. Plus picking in the 20s, we don't have a great chance of getting someone better than Haywood. And if you think giving up a pick in the low 20s for Haywood sux, ask Memphis how it feels giving up a #2 overall pick for Otis Thorpe! I guess the Griz can take some comfort in the fact that Detroit took Darko ahead of Carmelo, Bosh, and Wade.

If the Wizards have any picks, I hope they trade it for an experienced player. There's enough inexperience and projects on the team already.
