OK Wizards fans. Please settle a debate.
My buddy who says I know nothing about basketball and he knows everything compared to me has made a statement.
"Steve Blake is a better shooter than Gilbert Arenas"
I disagree completely. I dont know a whole hell of a lot about basketball, but I have watched all my life, and watched the Wiz all my life, and surely know a smidgen about the sport and the team.
His argument is, he is not as good of a "scorer" but a better "shooter." When I disagree, he says I dont understand, and I dont know basketball.
I get what hes saying, a better shooter meaning as a pure shooter, Blake is better. Problem is, I STILL think Arenas is better. He says anyone who knows anything about basketball would say Blake is a better shooter, and Im an idiot.
So what do you think? As a pure shooter, who is better, Blake or Arenas?
Not even close if you ask me.

I'd disagree with him too. Arenas is underrated as a shooter, IMO. Blake is too inconsistent. Dixon, OTOH, is a better pure shooter than both of 'em.
As far as Blake, I love him, but he needs to pick his defense up. He might have the worst defense on the team, next to Jamison.

Well....
If its game 7 of the Bulls/Wiz playoffs and the is 3 seconds for one player to take one shot (lets say a 20ft+ shot) then I want Arenas to take that shot 100 times out of 100.
Thats really all I have to say.

Oh for sure. But thats different from what hes saying. He agrees, with a hand in his face, or the game on the line, he would have Arenas take the shot.
He is saying in terms of pure shooting ability. Meaning like, in a game of HORSE, Arenas would lose to Blake.
That I cant swallow.

Blake wasn't much of a shooter at Maryland and while he's improved in the NBA he still isn't that great. Arenas is definately a better shooter than Blake.
What's more surprising is Dixon, who's FG% has dropped from 46% in college to around 40% in the NBA.

I agree.
Heres his rebuttal for clarification, because he says im misrepresenting this.
"if both of them made the 3 point contest all star weekend who would win it"
I still say Arenas.

3-pt contest between Gil and Stevie....now that would be interesting and I would say if Stevie got hot early he would beat almost anyone....Gil would give you more consistency.....edge to Stevie in a 3-pt. contest.:2cents:

Exactly what I said. Just because he saw one championship game with Steve Blake, hes a Wizards/Steve Blake mountain of knowledge.
Keep em comin!

Your friend is an idiot. I'm sorry, that's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Steve Blake is the most overrated "3-point specialist" I've ever seen. Arenas probably has a better 3-point avg. than Blake (don't quote me on that). The only thing I'll give Blake credit for is holding his own (somewhat) on a basketball court where the other 9 guys are much more talented. If he was on another team, I don't think he'd ever see any game time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Blake. He plays very hard. But, his lack of skills is obvious on the court.

I dont know about the worst defender.
Yeah, AJ is known to be bad but Gil is the least talked about bad defender on this team.

Gil's defense isn't great, but he comes up with some big defensive plays that usually makes up for it.
Blake's D is just plain horrible. He gets raped by every PG he goes against.

My best buddy is a Terps Gogglehead. We sit on the phone for countless Wiz games and all I hear from his mouth is Dixon, Profit, Blake. He also gets FURIOUS at Heinrich and Duhon. He's gonna make this series a raucous one.

Beautiful guys. Hes trying to sign up on the board to defend himself...I dont think its going to get him far.
Speaking of defenders...he also says the worst part of LARRY HUGHES' game is defense! While I agree he goes for the tough steal a bit too often....Id hardly say hes a bad defensive player.
But thats another "my stubborn friend says..." thread altogether! :p

Your friend and real basketball don't see eye-to-eye, do they?

Does anyone know why Blake never passes Kwame the ball when he's in good post position? I would make an observational guess that they dont get along, because Blake goes out of his way to not pass Kwame the ball.

da#1skinsfan's friend (guy who said Blake>Arenas as a pure shooter) pm'd me, and asked me to post this for him. Not sure why he couldn't post it himself, guess he's having difficulties. Again, these are HIS WORDS, not mine:
i would love to post on the arenas blake thread but for whatver reason i cant post yet. so maybe you would like to share this with everyone ripping me on that thread.
first of all which one has a better 3 point percentage means absolutley nothing. i am not arguing blake is better or is a better shooter in games. i agree blake is probably one of the worst players in the entire nba but he is a pure shooter which is one of the only reasons he is in the nba. this does not mean that he can shoot in games because he cant. but in pratice in a shooting competiton blake would win hands down. arenas is not a pure shooter, he is a scorer. i agree he hits a lot of tough shots but that does not make him a shooter.
secondly as far as me having terps goggles on thats rediculous. im not a terps fan at all. i have seen many maryland games with blake despite people saying i have seen only 1. whats funny is that even if i did only see one maryland game that would probably be one more then the person who said i only saw one. anyway blake was not a score on maryland he was probably the 3rd or 4th option but he was still a pure shooter he just couldnt score.
im not even going to argue weather arenas is a good jump shooter or not. i dont think he is but no one can honostly sit here and try to tell me that arenas is a pure shooter. he is not. if you think he is your probably the one who needs to see eye to eye with real basketball.

That's insane. Blake wasn't even a great shooter at Maryland. The reason he is in the NBA because he's a pass first point guard who can run an offense.
And what exactly is a pure shooter? Peja has one of the "worst" shots in the league but there's no one who would not consider him a shooter. Arenas is, hands down, the better offensive player whether it comes to shooting, driving, or inside scoring.

Juan Dixon is the one who's in the NBA because he's a pure shooter, not Steve Blake. When Dixon was drafted he couldn't play defense, had little to no dribble drive game, but he was drafted in the first round. Now he can slash a little bit and take you off the dribble if a littl ebit.
Blake has a horrible jump shot. It's gotten a lot better since he came into the league, but he's still a streaky shooter who, when he's hot and when he was hot at Maryland makes things a lot tougher. But a pure shooter he is not.
The list of pure shooters in the NBA is very small, they are people like Michael Redd, Peja, the Barry brothers, um..yeah. There's more, but there's a reason why the dream team couldn't hit a three to save their life in Athens.
The Definition of a scorer is someone who can put the ball in the basket at high volume. That is Arenas so I'd agree there. I don't think Arenas is a pure shooter. He's streaky, but more consistent than Blake is.
The Definition of a pure shooter is someone who can be consistently counted on to make the jump shot. Someone when you see them hoist the shot up you go, "oh, no" because you know there aint no way they're missing an open jumper, whereas with the streaky shooter you say "oh,no" if they're on a roll and hot. Think Brent Barry in San Antonio.
