Wizards Settle for a Loss
Lack of Intensity Ensures Playoffs Open in Chicago; Brown Grumbles: Nets 109, Wizards 101

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., April 19 -- The problem with Tuesday night's game was that the Washington Wizards were just a little too complacent. They already knew they would face the Chicago Bulls on Sunday in the first round and all that mattered was their playoff seeding: fourth or fifth.

The Wizards took the fifth. Following their 109-101 loss to the New Jersey Nets at Continental Airlines Arena, the Wizards guaranteed a trip to Chicago for Games 1 and 2 in the playoffs and made Wednesday night's game against the New York Knicks irrelevant.

Forward Kwame Brown was asked if he was upset that the team blew an opportunity to catch the Bulls -- who clinched the fourth seed with a win against the Knicks -- but he sounded as if starting the playoffs away from MCI Center was the preferred scenario. "I'll play on the road any day of the week," Brown said after scoring 14 points with eight rebounds. Then, he lashed out at the home fans who have booed him in recent games and intimated that they influenced Coach Eddie Jordan's decision to sit him during the last homestand.

"It's been like three games I've been ready to play, but the fans take it upon themselves to boo me when I miss shots," said Brown, who finished 6 of 13 from the field. "I missed [my first] two shots tonight. One was awful; it hit the other side of the rim. If we would've been in D.C., they would've booed; I would've been on the bench. Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Booing me? Is that going to help out there? That gives the coach the mind-set that [the fans] can control when I play and when I don't."

Brown then laughed and said, "I like playing on the road."

After a miserable showing against the Nets (41-40), who scored the first 10 points of the game and led by 28 points in the third quarter, Brown and the Wizards left themselves no choice. "If we come out and play our basketball, it doesn't matter where you go," point guard Gilbert Arenas said. "Home court only matters in Game 7. Other than that, you have to win one up there anyway. Why not let it be the first two? Then you'll have them on their heels."

Guard Larry Hughes had a team-high 18 points and forward Antawn Jamison and reserve center Etan Thomas had 14 points apiece. Thomas added 11 rebounds. Arenas had his second straight bad game in New Jersey, finishing with just eight points on 2-for-7 shooting. He has combined to score just 15 points on 2-of-14 shooting at Continental Airlines Arena this season.

"I don't know what it is," he said. Arenas was attempting to be a set-up man instead of a scorer, but the problem was, whenever he jumped to pass, his teammates thought Arenas was going to shoot and they turned their heads as he threw away the ball. "I told them, 'I'm trying to get you the ball.' They said they ain't used to it," said Arenas, who committed five of the Wizards' 16 turnovers (the Nets converted them into 23 points).

The Wizards (45-36) had won the first three games against the Nets, but the Nets didn't have Jason Kidd -- or any sense of hope -- in the first two matchups. And when the Wizards defeated the Nets 112-88 on Jan. 4, Kidd was still finding his rhythm from offseason knee surgery and swingman Vince Carter hadn't fully adjusted to the team after being traded from Toronto less than three weeks before. Since that game, the Nets have gone 30-21.

Kidd finished with a game-high 35 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. "I thought we came out the right way," Jordan said. "We just don't have a guy like Jason Kidd, who is just fighting, fighting and clawing. When you're fighting for your life, there is a little bit more incentive, a little bit more aggressive than somebody who is in our position."

Early in the third quarter, Jamison dived into the front row to track down the ball and flipped it right to Kidd, who nailed a three-pointer to give the Nets a 56-31 lead. "At that time, it didn't matter what we did, it didn't go the right way," Jamison said. "We were just going through the motions from the get-go. I'm kind of disappointed, but that's how it goes. Not to take anything away from those guys. They played like they wanted it."

Believe me, I'm no Kwame fan, but about the fans booing him, he's right. And about the fact that booing him doesn't help anyone is spot on as well. I have never booed a Wiz player during a game, not even Kwame (who I hope is gone next year), and I think it shows a poor attitude towards your team. Let the other Wiz players deal with him in the lockerroom. Well, that's my opinion, I guess if you buy a ticket you can boo whomever you want.

However, the comments about EJ pulling him because of the fans...Well, that's just stupid. He only gets booed when he plays poorly. Gee Kwame, do you see the correlation between the boos and you getting benched now?

I don't think I'd ever boo a home team player during a game. In addition, I've always supported Kwame and really hoped he'd turn into the player I thought he would.

Well guess what? I'm done hoping. I'm so tired of Kwame. He sucks and I finally see it. This bitching is just icing on the cake. That and the way he standed in the lane and pulled his arm back as Jason Kidd drove right past him and Blake towards the end of the game last night.

He is horrible and always will be. Bye Kwame.

I don't agree with the boos either but he should be a man and keep his mouth closed. And if you played well Kwame the boo birds would go away.

He's not going to win a verbal battle with the fans. He needs to just worry about his performance on the court. If he plays well, he won't get booed. It's as simple as that. Complaining about it publicly will only SHORTEN his leash with the fans.

And, in all honesty, I don't think he'd catch nearly as much crap if the perception was that he was always playing hard. He just looks so damn lazy on the court!! I'm sure that, more than anything, is what drives fans crazy. Now, if he played every game the way he played in the 2nd half last night (running the court, chasing down rebounds), he'd never get booed.

I went to the chicago game and the fans did boo him, but then again what has he done as a number 1 pick. Also, they really started booing him, when he would do dumb things and really screw up. If he misses a jumper it's alright, everyone does, but when he misses easy lay-up type shots I get frustrated.

I dont mind him adressing the question. He just should have done it better.

He could have said somthing like.

Well, actually we would always rather have home court in case it goes 7, but this may work out better for us. Well, at least better for me. It harder to concentrate when your fans are booing you.

I understand they are frustrated but it seems the leash has gotten really short. If I miss one shot, it they start on me right away. I know things havent gone as smootly as planned. And then this year I was injuried. Well, I feeling almost 100% now. have my legs finally. My timing is coming along. Im not where I would have been had a played the whole year but I cant worry about that now. All I can handle is whats ahead of me. I think Im ready to excert mayself on the boards and score when we need it.

Im making progress. I know what I need to do. At least if we start the first to game away, we can jump on them and take a game. If I miss a shot or 2, it will be easier if we are away. Them we can come back home already on a roll. I think the fans will be excited and support the whole team.

We are all in this together. We need our fans. I need our fans. We plan on making them proud. Im going to work my heart out. I hope they will support me.

This has always been the point. Im not sure what it takes to get his motor running, but its clear, this was what was frustrating MJ and he did the best he could to wake the kid up. Maybe if everyone would have gotten out of the way, it may have actually worked. Well never know. At said it earlier this year. MJ is gone. Now we will know how much of this was Kwame and how much was MJ. Seem most of it was Kwame to me. But, moving forward.....

Yes, he needs to hustle. All the time. Then he will never get booed. No one ever booes Ruffin when he misses a shot. Not even if he were to air ball. Thats what Kwame need to see.

Ruffin has build up 100 gravy points. He would have to mess up on offense a lot before he would ever get booed.

Kwame is right. Kwame also won't win a verbal battle with the fans. Kwame ALSO (from the sound of those quotes) WILL be leaving. Shame.

I think it will have a lot to do with what we do in the playoffs and what roll he plays.

If he shows up on the road, then we come home and he plays wel and we get out of the first round, everything can change.

He basically can make is future in this playoff run.

I have gone out of a limb and stated I think this kind of focus, a national audience, the playoff pressure, will actually get his butt hustling. I havent watch the last 2 games because I was on the road, but it seem he has started to excert himself more.
