University of Maryland poised to join the Big Ten
Quote:
The University of Maryland was poised Sunday to end its 59-year affiliation with the Atlantic Coast Conference and jump to the Big Ten Conference, a move that would eliminate a number of the school’s longstanding college sports rivalries but, in the view of those behind the proposal, shore up the finances of an athletic department that has fallen on rocky budgetary times.
The Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland will meet early Monday morning in a private session in Baltimore to decide whether Maryland should join the 12-member Big Ten, which is looking to expand its geographic and financial footprint.
The proposal needs a simple majority of the board’s 16 members to pass. University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh, who spearheaded the move, briefed the board on the proposal via telephone late Sunday afternoon.

Oh I do not like them going to the Big10. I understand the reasons why, but I'm just not a fan of us playing in the north all the time. Like others said, I know this is a football move, but I'll miss the ACC basketball games against Duke, UNC, NCState, Wake, etc. It won't be the same.
Re: Maryland Basketball (some football) recruiting news (Shaq, Layman Commits!)
It's a good move for UMD.
Better money, better academics (B1G is the #1 rated academic conference and the CIC will help UMD quite a bit).
I hate conference re-alignment. UMD and VT aren't rivals but all this moving around is obnoxious and confusing and destroying rivalries.

Can't hack it in the acc so gotta jump ship... Cowardly move

That has nothing to do with what's happening.
Any ACC school should take the B1G up on this offer. More money, better academics, a dedicated TV network etc.
Even if Notre Dame football joins the ACC this is a good move for UMD.
Re: Maryland Basketball (some football) recruiting news (Shaq, Layman Commits!)
I only think this is a bad move for 2 sports. LAX and Soccer. Other than that, it will benefit UMD. Maybe they'll actually make it to TV with the change. I've seen more Towson Football on ESPN the past two years than UMD.
Re: Maryland Basketball (some football) recruiting news (Shaq, Layman Commits!)
Kneejerk reaction was that I hated this move. But, I have to say I'm coming around to it a little bit.
One of the driving reasons is that there is going to continue to be realignment. How awful would it be to to be in an ACC that just lost Miami, FSU, Duke and UNC to the SEC? Its certainly possible that happens in a few years. Maybe less.
Re: Maryland Basketball (some football) recruiting news (Shaq, Layman Commits!)
I still don't like the idea. I get it if a handful of teams are actually leaving the ACC. But, I'd rather see Maryland join a newly created conference that is a bit more regional. I know the ACC kind of us regional if Boston to Florida can be. I also know Florida isn't close, so complaining about Nebraska or Iowa seems petty....but still.
Re: Maryland Basketball (some football) recruiting news (Shaq, Layman Commits!)
According to Twitter its all but official.
Peace out Terps.

Interesting move for Maryland. I don't see how it really helps them either way. But this looks to be the start of the end of the ACC, especially if FSU leaves for the Big 12 now.

Kevin Plank and the B1G will help out I'm sure.

The Big10 wants UNC badly. The commissioner is a UNC alum.
Also, GT is petitioning the Big10 for membership as well.

I would think FSU would be thinking SEC.

Good, then I guess we are ahead of the curve. I would think a few of those schools are SEC bound though. Maybe UNC and Duke don't like the SEC academic reputation and try to get into BigTen also.
I'd have to think two more schools go to big ten, and then four end up in SEC. I could see, GT, Duke, UNC, FSU, Miami, UVA, and/or UVA all being desirable to the SEC. Could see Duke, UNC, and UVA being desirable to the BigTen. Along with Notre Dame still.
