Statement by Fred Goldberg: Former IRS Commissioner
I have reviewed Governor and Mrs. Romney’s joint tax return for 2010, including returns for the Ann and Mitt Romney Family Trust, the Ann D. Romney Blind Trust, and the W. Mitt Romney Blind Trust. I have also reviewed the return in process for 2011. These returns reflect the complexity of our tax laws and the types of investment activity that I would anticipate for persons in their circumstances. There is no indication or suggestion of any tax-motivated or aggressive tax planning activities. In my judgment, they have fully satisfied their responsibilities as taxpayers. They have done so by relying on a highly reputable return preparer and other advisors, who have in turn relied primarily on information provided by third parties to them and to the IRS. The end result of that process has been returns that include a multitude of schedules, IRS forms and accompanying statements that provide appropriate transparency and the proper payment of taxes that Governor and Mrs. Romney owe under current law.

For 2010 and 2011, not the 20 years his accountant's note is talking about...

It is really inexplicable why Romney did this. Does a note from his accountant substitute for the actual returns? If he has nothing to hide either release the forms or don't and be silent, trying to quell the controversy this way does nothing but revive it. The guy has terrible political instincts.

obviously, which part was "going off" The part about the tax returns being normal?
My rant about believing the previous tax returns like you should believe in the birth cert?
My going off on a former commissioner saying there was nothing wrong with the previous taxes.
"I do see they were 'only' two years, so it seems two years are fine but we doubt the year before that? or the year before that year.
it never ceases to amaze. The Short form apparently never works.
Re: Romney/Ryan '12 Thread
Why do you keep bringing up 'short form' about Romney's taxes?
I'm assuming you don't mean the note from the account is some kind of tax return short form (hopefully). You seem so determined to draw some sort of false equivalency between the birthers and anyone who ask Romney a tax question.
Re: Romney/Ryan '12 Thread
So if Romney paid, say, 25% on 10 million one year and 15% on 30 million the next, does that mean he paid an average of 20%? Because I find it interesting that all of a sudden he wants to include 20 years of data when 2 years was supposed to be more than sufficient.

Because calling people a name you just invented is easier than actually forming a coherent thought?
Just a theory.
Re: Romney/Ryan '12 Thread
I suspected that he might have given very generously since many Mormons tithe faithfully. Romney's still as charismatic as a saw-horse but at least this tax record dump should hopefully shut up Harry Reid. This campaign has irked me--from both camps--with how unserious it's been about addressing the financial state of our country.

What tax dump?
He released a single year of taxes, and those were the taxes he paid last year, 2011, and he'd already released the estimate for 2011 before. What he's practically done is release a few more details.
That's not a dump.
On a side note, Romney's lawyer admits that he over paid his taxes to keep his % high:
http://www.mittromney.com/blogs/mitt...stee-brad-malt
"The Romneys’ generous charitable donations in 2011 would have significantly reduced their tax obligation for the year. The Romneys thus limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the Governor's statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13% in income taxes in each of the last 10 years."
Previously, Romney stated if he over paid his taxes intentinally, he wouldn't be qualified to be President:
""I don't think you want someone as the candidate for president who pays more taxes than he owes," he said.
Romney told ABC News in July," Frankly, if I had paid more than are legally due I don't think I'd be qualified to become president. I'd think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires."
Asked how the decision squared with Romney's comments, adviser Michele Davis said the Romneys were in a "unique position."
"He has been clear that no American need pay more than he or she owes under the law," she said. "At the same time, he was in the unique position of having made a commitment to the public that his tax rate would be above 13%. He directed his preparers to ensure that he is consistent with that statement.""

You know your having issues when you have to over pay your taxes to keep make it look good, when you've said before that should disqualify you for the job you are trying to get and over paying your taxes to help you get.

Good thing this thread closes not to long after 11/6.
Will probably have to open a thread then the upcoming Republican Civil War. :ols:

Two thoughts: If he resigned from the race it would give him a hell of a bump in the poll numbers. Imagine a politician who keeps his word.
If he had to readjust his taxes to meet the level he said he had paid previously, does that mean he was lying to us?

Burgold: Can you explain this better?
He said he's never paid lower than this percent. Found out he would after last years income as he was filling it out so he took less deductions
to ensure it would be over. Could you point out where he lied.
You would have President Obama run without a challenger due to the Challenger giving more to charity than expected?
As a member of the media you have to know something i'm being dense about.
Re: Romney/Ryan '12 Thread
He had zero taxable wages.
So he's part of the 47% moocher class who paid no income tax last year.

He'd have a challenger. Gary Johnson.
Also, I would assume Paul Ryan would take over the bid which might be more interesting anyway.
