What is the definition of "severely" dealing with North Korea? If you are talking war, invasion, or any other nonsense like that then you are definitely not seeing the big picture. War in the region would not only be devestating for the people in the region (China/Korea/Japan) but it will have widespread repercussions to the world economy.
Only way to deal with North Korea is to find a way to get the North Koreans to develope their economy so that they will less dependent on the military/arms business.

North Korea will not change its focus from military and arms. N Korea is about cross the line of immediate threat. They laid down a statement threatening the US with nuclear tests aimed at us! There is a point where you have to say its a lost cause. N korea laid down threats to China and the US. Enough is enough. We've been trying to get that country to change forever. Quite simply they are power hungry. A country like that which has its emotions swing every second shouldn't have WMDs. Not to mention they know exactly what they are doing. They keep pushing and getting more confidence they can do whatever they want. If they want to throw down cards I say we do too. All it takes is one pod opening in the western US and the country is gone. It would be best for them to remember that. Also sometimes you have to make sacrifices. A hit to the world economy is worth it if multiple countries are in danger. Human lives>Money

you say that "Human live > Money" yet you are basically ignoring the amount of lives that will be lost not only in North Korea but definitely in South Korea and also possibly in Japan.
I said this in number of threads previously and I will say it again...
Invading countries in areas like Iraq and Afganistan is must more different than invading North Korea due it is proximity to major city centres.

so you propose we sit back and take these threats? And when N Korea launches a missile right into one of our major cities (DC,New York, Philly, etc) what are you gonna say? We aren't making crap up here. N Korea laid it down right on the table what they are doing and what it's all about. At that point you are asking for war or worse. I'm tired of people thinkign that you can just change N Korea by changing their economy. They don't care. They want to be all powerful. This isn't about sustaining their economy. They simply want to strike fear into the hearts of countries around the world with threats of WMDs. They need to know the world isn't gonna stand for it. It's like a wimpy dog trying to bark at the big dog except the little dog is now trying to get some steroids so it can take on the big one. Let that little dog get those steroids. See how well it turns out for the big dog.

So in 50 words or less, why does North Korea want to bomb us? Because of sanctions?
I don't want a catastrophic war.

Korean War, 60 year ceasefire with no peace treaty, crazy people caught in personality cult, all in on weapons programs, sanctions on weapons program, US is devil and S. Korea is devil number 2.
Was that 50 or fewer?

because in order to keep a population under control you need something they can fear more than the regime.
the regime protects them from us, the source of all their problems.

There are literally 20 million South Koreans living within shooting range of North Korea's artillery. Seoul is right near the border.

North Korea: Sanctions by South would be 'declaration of war'
North Korea threatened Friday to attack rival South Korea if Seoul joined a new round of tightened U.N. sanctions, saying it would regard this as "a declaration of war."
The reclusive North has this week declared a boycott of all dialogue aimed at ending its nuclear program and vowed to conduct more rocket and nuclear tests after the U.N. Security Council censured it for a December long-range missile launch.
On Thursday, Washington unveiled more of its own economic restrictions following Pyongyang's rocket launch last month.
Friday brought a third straight day of fiery rhetoric from the isolated communist state, this time directed against South Korea.
"'Sanctions' mean a war and a declaration of war against us," the North said.

Hey, if your farts are as bad as my old college roommate's were - it IS a declaration of war. Chemical warfare bordering on nuclear. :thud:

Food crisis in N. Korea may have killed 10,000 people last year
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA (BNO NEWS) — Thousands of people may have died as a result of severe food shortages in North Korea last year, forcing some people to resort to cannibalism, according to a Japanese news agency which estimates the death toll could be as high as 10,000.
Asia Press, which is based in Japan but secretly works with a group of citizen journalists inside North Korea, said dozens of interviews and reports have led the agency to conclude that “considerable numbers of people” died last year as a result of severe food shortages in North Korea’s North and South Hwanghae provinces.

I don't think North Korea wants to necessarily bomb anyone. What they keep doing is adding numbers to the list of "people that will die within 24 hours of any kind of military action against North Korea."
The US could probably annihilate the North Korean army within a week. The question is how many tens of millions of South Koreans will die before that war is completed.
The nuclear program gives them the option of taking a few million Japanese with them and - maybe someday - a few Predictos.
