RGIII's pre-season playing time thoughts and predictions
What are all of your thoughts on how much RGIII should be played in the pre-season? Usually your starter has a standard number of series and/or quarters that they play and then the rookies come in, but this is a different situation for us this year. Our starter is a rookie. He needs as many reps as possible, but not at the risk of getting injured.
Does he play only with 1st stringers? or with the backups as well?
I think you need to play him with the starters to gain that connection with your skill position players, but I also think its important that he gets some reps against 2nd and 3rd string defenses to allow him to get a hold of the playbook without being under quite as much pressure. Keep your first team out there and go against some backups for a couple series. Let him gain some confidence.
I predict:
Game 1: Entire first half with most other starters that are fully healthy; Rex and Cousins each play a quarter
Game 2: Plays first 3 Quarters with Cousins playing the 4th
Game 3: Plays first 3 Quarters with Rex playing the 4th
Game 4: Play 1st Quarter with Cousins playing 2 and Rex 1 (possibly play 2 quarters depending on progress)
Re: RGIII's pre-season playing time thoughts and predictions
Here is what I would do:
Game 1: 1st quarter
Game 2: 1st half
Game 3: 3 quarters
Game 4: None

I think the fourth game at least do a quarter.

Many starters sit the 4th game out. I'm not putting RG3 out there with scrubs and against scrubs. I'd rather give him and the rest of the starters the extra week of rest to get ready for New Orleans.

I like this plan but I certainly would not balk at him getting the first half in game 1. :)
Re: RGIII's pre-season playing time thoughts and predictions
Games One and Two: 1st Half
Game Three: 3 Quarters
Game Four: 1 Quarter
Cousins plays one quarter each in the first and second quarter, maybe a drive in the third, and 2 quarters in game four.
Re: RGIII's pre-season playing time thoughts and predictions
Game 1: One half
Game 2: One quarter and a half
Game 3: One quarter and a half
Game 4: One quarter
I can see the most playing time coming in game one so that they find out early what his rookie weaknesses in a game situation early so they can address them early, then leave him in for a good amount of time. Then quarter one of the 4th quarter will be the 'true' dress rehearsal for our 1st string.
Re: RGIII's pre-season playing time thoughts and predictions
Games 1 & 2 entire 1st Half
Game 3 3 quarters
Game 4 1st Quarter max maybe just 2 series.

I'm on board with this. Let game 4 decide who the back up is. Should be good

I don't think dominating a second string group with our starters will really instill confidence in RGIII. He seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't lose confidence when faced with an entirely new level of pressure. I don't see him pulling a John Beck out there.
I'd play him primarily with the starters, but do a bit of OL platooning, like swapping out the C so he gets work with the back-up in a starting context.
I don't have a prediction on how much time he'll see in each game, but I will predict that ~95% of his time out there will be with an offense made up mostly of the starters.

I agree with this, but I would like to see him play with some of the receiver reserves as kind of a test for him and them alike. We know Garcon and Moss are quality players as starters, but I'd like to see how he responds to throwing to guys who are fringe players. At the same time, I'd like to see those guys get a test with RG3 to see if maybe we have some unknowns have some chemistry with RG3.

I agree... I really meant confidence in the play book, not as much dominating lesser players thus making him feel confident in his play. I just want him to be able to learn the playbook and get the throws off without being killed in pre-season... not sure if that makes sense.. Sometimes going against a lesser opponent can help a young kid in a new system.

True that many starters sit game 4 out, but most quarterbacks play a drive or two, to keep the rust off.
I wouldn't be surprised to see RG3 play a quarter to get more used to actual game situations.
Re: RGIII's pre-season playing time thoughts and predictions
I don't want him coming off the field. I even want him holding on late-game FGs or PATs.
