Shanny gave up those drafting chances when he traded the farm for RG3. Not saying he was wrong to do so, but saying that we need to build through free agency, for better or for worse.
Good teams find talent outside of the first round year in and year out. We just have to scout our butts off which is one of the most important aspects of building a consistant winner anyways.

Couldn't agree more, and the cordinators turned first time head coaches are having a lot more success now a day than the retreads. The succesfull franchises know how to find them.

The penalties are alarming, the defense is categorically terrible, what's tolerated by the coach is bad. It's not looking good. Changing coaches and staffs isn't the answer, that's happened a lot here and it sucks...but When it's all done I don't think this coach will have been the answer either. This hurts.

There are coaches out there. Are there better ones than Shanahan? Particular ones that can do more on offense than Shanahan has? The failings of Shanahan the past few years are fixable easily. But guys who produce top 10 offenses with 2nd tier talent do not grow on trees.

For our next head coach, we could hire Rick Dennison, former OC under Shanahan and current Texans OC. I'm not advocating for this move unless Shanahan refuses to give up being a GM.

Why do the Skins underacheive?
Not sure what it is ... But, it's getting to be ridiculous! For over a decade the Skins have underacheived. They have decent coaches. But, it appears the players we have traded for, or drafted don't live up to their full potential, excluding RG III and Alfred Morris.
If we are to be competitive, and resilient we need to take a page out of the NY Giants, GB Packers, and NE Patriots.
It's upsetting to see that the Colts are 5-3, and they have less talent than us!

finally, someone with a REAL answer. Yes, that's a viable alternative to Mike Shanahan. We keep mostly the same system, the same ZBS etc. I don't think Dennison is as creative or dynamic a playcaller or schemer, but he's more conventional, which people may like seeing how gimmicky Kyle tends to get. Kyle did turn in very good offenses in Houston, but Dennison seems better now because they got a better defensive coach (if you ask me).

The colts will be coming back down to earth, and I believe their are more team with bad records in the AFC.

If they're easily fixable, why hasn't he fixed them?
Bottom line, as the head coach, he's responsible for all of it, not just where his offense is ranked. Picking the defensive coordinator, being most penalized team in the league, the underwhelming nature of the talent on the roster, all are the responsibility of the head coach in this scenario. Shanahan wanted all the power and responsibility, he doesn't have the luxury of pointing to the offensive ranking to say he's getting the job done.

Yeah, I don't like the fact that the Colts have a better record, but they do have better and I mean far better talent than the Skins. I myself thought the Colts would be as bad as they were last year, but they have veterans at key positions that the Skins just don't. It pains me to see that the Colts might actually make the playoffs, but they might. Good for them though, but it just SUCKS for us.

At times it certainly does feel like no matter what this organization does to try to get better it just doesn't work for one reason or another.

To the points about the Colts: I saw pretty much everyone prior to the season talk about how RGIII was coming into such a better situation, how our talent was way better than the Colts', etc. Pundits, lots of ES, plenty of other message boards. And here we are at 3-6 while they're at 5-3. Our defense, what was seemingly our strength, has regressed and we find ways to beat ourselves. We don't make enough plays, and a lot of the time, especially today, we look listless.
I'm not saying we should be hoisting the Lombardi and ready to repeat, but it doesn't take three full seasons to look competent and beat up on bad teams like the Panthers. It doesn't, and it shouldn't.
Even with injuries, capspace, whatever reason you want to pull out, Shanahan has had enough drafting/FA to have something going. Right now, it honestly looks like the only pieces we have moving forward are the two players we picked up from this past draft, RGIII and Morris. The Colts are making it work better than we are and in one season.
Which leads me to believe one of two things: Either the coaching staff has done a bad job at evaluating and collecting talent, or we have adequate talent and the coaching staff does not know how to properly utilize it.
Either possibility leaves me pretty grim. The hope Shanahan initially instilled in me is fading fast.

Wrong. Skins has guts when Gibbs came back. He's looking better and better to me as time goes on since he left the 2nd time. Show some respect to the man for two playoff appearances. You think these players want to win for Shanny? Please. Gibbs could move men, Shanny can't.

You'd have to assume that Dennison would bring in one of Wade Phillips's disciples to run our 3-4, too (perhaps Reggie Herring, whom I've also pushed for). To me, that's an unproven staff with LOADS of potential. These are relatively young guys that can grow with our young roster.
