Re: 2013 Comprehensive NFL Draft Database
I like the fact that Tony Jefferson can line-up vs Slot receivers and cover them. I like that he has had experience as a CB. His coverage skills are what attract me. He's able to turn and run with whomever he covers, he can swivel his hips around and change direct effortlessly. He moves more like a CB out there.
A safety like Eric Reid can knock your mouthpiece out, give you snotbubbles, he's extremely good in run support, gives out big hits. You see him often as an in the box enforcer type safety. Same with Swearinger.
Swearinger is going to get selected before where people are projecting right now. CBS says 4th or 5th round, no way. I don't think that's close at all, much earlier.
Jefferson provides essentially another cornerback on the field. He's not as big or as physical as Reid or Swearinger. He doesn't have the same kind-of killshots on tape that you see from eith Reid or DJ. Those two destroy people across the middle.
Reid and Swearinger have made plays in coverage from the deep middle, but I'd call their stock in trade as physical run supporters, more in the box, heat seekers across the middle on pass. More of a SS with Swearinger. Reid can play either FS or SS, but ... I don't know what the words are, you can see it on tape, when he plays, there's something missing in the coverage skills. Not necessarily a critique or detriment, just something...
For Jefferson he's not trying to fly up from 20 yards deep and destroy a RB. He can make solid hits, had some against Texas yesterday, in fact. But his ability to play man on a slot receiver, it allows for the base packages to be diverse and flexible rather than needing a bunch of sub packages. He can cover deep middle as well.

With a new DC and some money spent on corner (DRC and Talib, move Hall to FS) and a healthy Rak, we could have a defense that's top 16ish, but gets lots of takeaways and sacks, similar to the 2009, except far more talented.
If you want a pass-rushing disruptive 3-4, you don't even have to move personnel around too much - Carriker, Cofield, Bowen and Jenkins are all athletic for their size, they're just not J.J Watt or Haloti Ngata athletic freaks.
Also, in round 3, I'd go with a Zach Ertz over a Patton. Ertz could be our Gronk, and he could easily fall to us with Fauria and Eifert there. He might not come out though.
I still want Margus Hunt and am hoping he falls to late 3rd/early 4th, but he might sneak into round 2, he's playing pretty well right now, and he's inevitably going to blow the combine away. I'd definitely also look at Tevin Reese at that spot, and he could also be our returner of the future if Robinson can't seize that spot.
Basically, my first 3 picks would be:
Best RT on board
Zach Ertz/Margus Hunt
Margus Hunt/Mike Gillislee/Tevin Reese
On top of signing DRC/Talib and moving Hall to FS, and hoping Gomes can hold down the fort at SS, though we can draft a guy like Brandon Bishop round 5 for competition.
I like the idea of just loading up on O and then focusing on creating sacks and turnovers, and we have the personnel to do it with a more aggressive scheme.
Re: 2013 Comprehensive NFL Draft Database
Can't see Jefferson declaring until 2014. He's still learning the safety position and I think he'll take his senior year for the extra experience in Norman.
Hail.

48 *Cordarrelle Patterson
53 Tavon Austin
69 *DeAndre Hopkins

80 *Kenny Stills
94 *Marquess Wilson
98 Quinton Patton
99 Denard Robinson
This is a really, really, really good WR year for the first half of the draft. You can probably get a beast outside starting receiver late in the third this year.
In general, I think the offensive side of the ball is way stronger than the defensive side in this year's draft. I think you've probably got ~ 15 WRs, ~16 offensive linemen, maybe 9 or 10 QBs, 3 TEs, and probably 9 or 10 RBs going in the first 100 picks.
Yep, The wide receiver class looks special this year. I've been steadily thinking that a really good WR will slide on draft day because teams will inevitably grab for some need, leaving a BPA, maybe a receiver, who will be there for whoever is lucky.
I mean if Da'Rick Rogers is sitting there in the 2nd, that's what I'm talking about. He's definitely a 1st round talent. I wouldn't be surprised if someone rolls the dice with him in the 1st, it's probable.
Same vein with Tavon Austin there in the 2nd round.
Another name needed on that top 100 list for receivers is Brandon Coleman - IMO, from Rutgers. He looks special out there. His size, height and length and the way he can move. A real good athlete for his size. 6'6" and 220+ lbs. He's a redshirt Soph, so he's draft eligible but not sure if he'll enter early.
Stedman Bailey probably also belongs in the top 100, as per CBS is concerned.
Re: 2013 Comprehensive NFL Draft Database
Denard Robinson in the NFL is such a joke, I can think of about a hundred better QBs than him in the NCAA and I can think of about 50 players I would rather take a shot at for receiver. He is really horribly overrated and it's apparent when you actually watch him play. The fact someone put him in the top 100 for receivers is laughable at best.

It might be just a draftnik phenomenon rather than reflective of something the talent evaluators are saying. He's had some moments of immaturity and pouting on the field when things weren't going his way. Coupled with some drops of his, TD drops and other receivers on the team making catches. (Here's one reason why I think it's more draftnik): Also the Leach offense not exploding for 1,000 yards a game, actually being a bit anemic at times and team losses - I think that's devalued him a bit. Fans and draftniks use arbitrary things like team success to unfairly devalue a player. Though he is a bit light and skinny anatomically speaking, so compared to the bigger receivers, people might be weary of that.

He had experience even last year with safety. I think it was 2010 when he was just a nickel corner. But, ...
Stock is a funny thing. Rambo probably would have been a surefire 3rd rounder last year, if you believe the draft advisory board, and I do. This year, after the suspension and now the vaunted UGA defense getting scored on at will, there's more and more guys moving up that make me think Rambo is more expendable, less of a necessity. For example Swearinger, I think he goes before Rambo. He came back and looked noticeably lighter and skinnier, less muscle. And I actually like Rambo, have stood up for him in here. But there's reason to think a slide is on.
Point being the longer you wait, sometimes the cooler the fire gets. Right now, I don't think Jefferson's stock goes any higher with additional time in the system, another year. I mean maybe he gets gaudy stats for his Senior year. But, He's projected in the 2nd. If he goes back for another year, it just allows for another crop of new faces to become more fashionable.
Not that I think it will sway his decision. He's a true Junior so maybe the only thing that matters to him is graduating from a fine institution like Oklahoma. Maybe he's grounded like that and wants that degree. So more power to him.
I like the interviews he gives, I know he's all about football and he's serious about it. He was an avid twitter guy, he gave it up to focus on football, I like that.
But I'm saying you're not going to confuse him with Swearinger. There's physical limitation to everyone and with Jefferson, he's not Eric Reid and I don't think another year will make him like Reid. So no matter how long he waits the next Reid will be coveted ahead of him due to physical tools, pure athletic ability, size, power tackles, etc.
So I'd take a chance that someone would select me in the 2nd or 3rd if that's a realistic opportunity, rather than the dream shot of elevating into the 1st, because there's always the chance that injury occurs or you find yourself stuck buried in a deep class.

Well, Matthews and Lewan are gone well before the Skins pick in the 2nd, but I understand your sentiment. I'd gladly take either, but ... BTW, Eric Fisher should be on that list as well. There's a chance he's there in the 2nd.
It was funny we were talking about him a little bit ago and all of a sudden he jumped on the CBS big board, from the #8 OT up to #4. Not coincidentally it occurred after Fisher handled (beat) Gholston on 1-on-1.

Have to think Fisher is there in round 2 unless he has a Joe Staley/Duane Brown esque rise into the 1st round(which is possible)

I need to check out Fisher. Haven't seen him play yet, I'm working on old information.
I saw the cutups of Lewan versus Gholston. That actually raised my opinion of Lewan a lot. Matched Gholston athletically and showed superior technique. He looked like the future NFL player and Gholston the guy struggling to get it figured out. He was nasty too. Before Gholston cold cocked him, Lewan really pounded him and then jammed his face in the dirt.
I think Aboushi, Matthews, and Lewan are all clear first round talents. But I also think a couple of these first round OTs will drop into the second like some of the guys from the past two drafts did.
Re: 2013 Comprehensive NFL Draft Database
Fisher right now is that hot name Steve. You watch his film this year and its really sticking out just how well he's playing

Re: 2013 Comprehensive NFL Draft Database
Yeah, we definitely didn't overpay for Griffin. Still gives me good vindication when I was talking about him a year before his rise happened.
Re: 2013 Comprehensive NFL Draft Database
If Matthews or Lewan are there when we're picking in the 2nd (they won't be), we need to run to the podium for them. Matthews would probably instantly be middle of the pack as far as tackles go with room to grow, while Lewan is an unfinished product in pass protection, so he'd probably be about even to Polumbus, but he should grow in that area.
Aboushi is the likely RT in the 2nd, and I pick him over most other positions if there are comparable players, unless we really ignore the secondary in FA, then we need to go S.
