At this point, Cousins is worth much more to us than I believe we would receive in compensation for a trade.
I think the value went up a little after today. Matt Schaub and Kevin Kolb netted 2nd round picks with limited game action. Charlie Whitehurst netted a 3rd round pick with virtually no regular season action. With this league becoming so QB driven, and the Cardinals, Jets, Jaguars, Bills, Chiefs, and possibly a few more teams in dire need (not to mention only maybe two legit 1st round QBs in Geno Smith and Matt Barkley) right now I think the value has risen to the 2nd round level. A 24 year old QB who's shown ability (even in only a couple of games) is definitely going to raise some eyebrows around the league.

Would you take pick 32 for him this offseason if it was offered?

Based on the way Wilson has played, I don't think you can include Flynn in that list.

He's worth more than what I previously stated... a cheeseburger. That's for damn sure.
However, I think he's worth more to us than whatever we could get for him.
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
We have one great, and one very good, rookie QB. In a QB-driven league, that's the equivalent of a gold mine. Our rebuild and roster overhaul is coming along just fine, and we'll be scary when we get our salary cap space back. Unless someone makes us an offer we can't refuse, there's no reason to shop Cousins. With the way Griffin plays, we will always need a capable backup on the roster.

I'd just think it was funny that the Rams want to give us our first rounder back for Kirk. ;)
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
i am amazed. this young man is showing great promise, especially being a rookie. while he is not quite a RG3, he is a winner. he has won two games for the redskins in desperate situations. he led this team on offense as well as RG3. i only hope, his contract will keep him around for a few years. surely, no one thinks grossman can do better than cousins. he fits the shanahans scheme of offense pefectly. second round pick give me a break. there are a lot of teams willing to go after this young qb. next year, they will be standing in line. name me the successful qbs in the nfl now, especially young qbs. weedon, bradshaw, san franciscos qb. there are a lot of needs out there, and he will be worth keeping as long as RG3 continues to run the ball, and little other options for the skins. no way even think about trading him. qb the most valuable position in college and pros.
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
I think fans and the Redskins organization as well need to be careful not to chase fool's gold in a situation like this. KC stepped up and proved how important a solid backup QB can be to a team's success, against the Browns yesterday. Rex Grossman might have won that game for us if we didnt have a Kurt Cousins on the roster this season but then again, Rex or a different NFL retread might have found a way to lose that game as well. Let's say for the sake of argument that Bruce Allen can swindle a late 1st round pick or two 2nd picks (Charley Casserly's prediction) out of a team for Cousins... How many late 1st round picks are in a position to make game winning plays for their team on a regular basis? I will acknowledge two 2nd round picks could potentially turn into two starters one day BUT... are we necessarily talking playmakers, TD scorers, turnover generators guaranteed if its even possible to get 2 picks (two 2nd round picks or a 2nd and a 3rd for example) for Cousins? Obviously there are no guarantees in a situation like this but i prefer to put my money on a solid QB who is going to touch the ball on every offensive play in lieu of trading for draft picks just for the sake of making a slick trade. The million dollar question is... after trading Cousins for all the picks the experts say we can get for him, what's your plan for the next Redskins backup QB? Draft another QB? Free Agency? If these were viable options, wouldn't the proposed trading partner in this case opt to go one of those routes instead of giving picks away to my beloved Skins? I just can't see the logic in trading Cousins unless you are about to lose him to free agency anyway because there's no cap space to re-sign him. That's the only way I trade Cousins if I'm Bruce Allen... At the end of his rookie deal, if he can't be re-signed because of the salary cap implications. KC will be wearing burgundy and gold for life if its up to me, otherwise.
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
I'll put it to you this way, I think if we did the draft over again knowing what we know today the QBs would come off the board in this order:
1. Griffin
2. Wilson
3. Luck
4. Cousins
Cousins is making a case to be a starter in this league. He seems like the type who will make the most of whatever opportunity he gets, and it will not be long before teams come calling. It would take an extraordinary trade offer for me to think we should part with him at this point though, as he presents great value to us as a backup. He proved today exactly why we need a guy like him on the roster.
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
Having a high class backup is a luxury - if Cousins continues to perform at this level, no way he makes it to the end of his contract. I really wouldn't be surprised to see a team come in with an offer for him. TBH having Rex Grossman as a backup is pretty decent! If we get 2 2s or a 1, pull the trigger. I don't think its out of the question a team is willing to offer that. This years crop of QBs is reckoned to be poor - I could see a number of teams interested! If the right offer doesn't come in, then hold on to him - he's a great insurance policy for griffin. I just can't see us holding on to a QB to be a backup who clearly has a chance at becoming a starter for much longer if he keeps playing at this level when given a chance.

If we turn down a deal for 2 2nd round picks in exchange for Cousins, in effect we will be paying 2 2nd rounders in order to retain him. Because, at that point, we will have given up the opportunity to have 2 2nd rounders in exchange for keeping Cousins on the roster, which is nearly identical to paying those 2 2nd rounders ourselves. If our FO went out this offseason and traded 2 2nd rounders for a promising backup QB, would you be happy about that? I know I wouldn't.
I don't know if any team in this league can afford to keep 2 2nd round picks tied up in a backup QB that is not in the long-term plans to become a starter. I know for sure that our team can't - we don't even have any first round picks for the next two years. We need those picks.

In a heartbeat.

I do think there is something in the argument that he has more value than anything we will realistically be offered this offseason. We are not getting offered a first round pick and a second may be a stretch IMO off one game and a couple of mop up appearances. If RGIII can't play again this regular season and Cousins maintains this standard in a couple of wins that take us into the playoffs then it's a different conversation - but I think RGIII will be OK for next week so that's probably moot.
I think Cousins stays next season unless some GM gets desperate or losses his mind and offers a 2nd plus something.
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
I think Cousins has a 4 year deal. I don't see why you would move him before year 4. You have to figure RG3 will miss some time, maybe a game or two a year. You need to have a good backup. If he comes in and plays this well in 3-4 more games over the next two seasons we are in a great spot to get a high pick or two.
Re: What is Kirk Cousins worth?
So, browsing a Browns' message board, I came across this, and it made me so thankful for our current front office. :)
